Thanks so much Stew for an excellent and well presented video. CASA have already released a public consultation paper on the introduction of remote ID in Australia (you have provided the link in the description). I urge your viewers to respond to this paper with a resounding NO to Remote ID!!!!!!!!! With a perfect safety record from our recreational community, I believe we have earned the right to say that the onus of safety and avoidance should be placed squarely on the proposed commercial drone taxi and delivery operators and CASA with (as you suggest) a phone app showing the status of your proposed flying area. CASA and FAA reps will always use the arguments of how there are hundreds (maybe thousands) of drone flight breaches recorded every year. What they don't tell you is that the majority are from GPS guided camera drones. Reputable brands are now fitting tracking already. Problem solved. I will be submitting that racing quads, RC model aircraft and helicopters should be exempt due to the fact they only fly in the close vicinity of the operators (unlike GPS operated UAVs). Also that extra costs associated with Remote ID, model club fees and travel to locations will discourage our young from taking up the hobby. The model aircraft hobby ultimately provides our aviation industry with new technology and manpower. I strongly believe Remote ID will either have a detrimental effect on the industry or cause a large majority of people to break the law.

I have been flying RC since 1971, I have been flying RC quads since 2014, and I live in the US and I have been listening to the FAA and the news that they expect us to fallow the new rules. I absolutely agree with you about keeping the sky’s and community safe being the priority and that that Remote ID both doesn’t achieve this, but actually may increases the risk of incident (if Broadcast Only is implemented).
I’ll be providing feedback to the Department of Infrastructure in the same vein as your video!
It also seems, that both this proposal is ‘negative focused’ (stating in the first sentence: ‘…and supports identifying drone operators and holding them accountable for they’re actions’…
And out of touch with the industry, both commercial and recreational.
We have a unique situation where we can see the impact of the US, and with community support, hopefully avoid going down the same route.

Great video Stew. A lot of us are up in arms about the RID and these issues with it could potentially make things worse and not better.
Bruce’s aka Xjet’s ADSB device would be a better idea. Plus you’d only need one device, it could have a pilot ID code already programmed into it that can be broadcasted over your cellphone.
Better idea would even integrate it within Betaflight for an OSD view for the pilot have an audible announcement for aircraft to include location direction via compass in degrees, altitude from ground level, ground speed and distance from your centered location.
Also to only make information available only to the proper authorities only. The general public shouldn’t be alerted mostly due to the paranoia some individuals may have towards drones and other RC aircraft.

Bruce has the right idea out the ball into the court of maned aircraft requiring adsb system. Then you know they are coming …. That is a great approach to safety. Bruce is even putting his work out there so manufacturers can build so you don’t end up with a monopoly and high prices….

The "Drone Tag Beacon" costs A$468. The "Drone Beacon dB120" costs A$290. The "Drone Tag BS" costs A$234 (All landed in Australia with GST). It is totally unreasonable to expect a hobbyist to add a $300 module to a model aircraft costing $75.

This is basically one of the videos I was going to make and have been working on to put on my main channel. I plan on making several videos. I was going to go through the same RID objectives and make all the same points. But, there are a lot of people out here harassing those making these videos that are saying the same things that others have said. To those doing the harassing about "copying" other youtubers on this subject... This isn't about infringement of others' content. This is about bringing awareness to the public of how insanely ridiculous and damaging RID is to all aspects of aviation and safety. The more videos out here, and the more people making these videos, the more awareness it brings to the public. It is about saving the hobby and the future of aviation as a whole.

Out of curiosity, I wanted to ask your approach to flying fpv here in Aus?
My understanding is that CASA only allow it if your a member of the MAAA (model aircraft association) flying it at one of their sites, or if your a fully qualified RePL pilot flying under a ReOC, with the additional BVLOS classification… but take your goggles off, you can fly the drone under normal guidelines?
(I can’t quite understand how you can learn the skill if you need those quals before you can fly fpv???)
Realise you may not want to answer this here, but really interested to hear how you’ve gone about this?
I’m simply a bit amazed that having a spotter, who knows and understands the regulations, isn’t enough?

Most aviation authorities purview around the world tends to be safety, noise, privacy and environmental concerns are not.
There are other agencies that these responsibilities already fall to.
No one seems to have mentioned what happens if, on a small craft, the RID module has to be mounted so close to the radio receiver that it causes interference resulting in loss of control. Surely this makes it less safe not more so.
We all know that cameras with BT enabled can cause a significant loss of range if not total loss of control.

Thank you for this push back on RID. Maybe I am paranoid, but the biggest issue for me is the fact that anyone who wants to, can see what drones are nearby and exactly where they are. So the big question is why would anyone other than authorities want or need to see RID information? Answer, any anti-drone nut case or someone looking to steal some equipment. No one would be looking at that info to go and say Hi and wish you well. Seems the risk to the operator by not complying is way less than the risk of adding RID to your RC plane or quadcopter, but as I said, maybe I am paranoid.

Us commercial fishermen have been having to use AIS for a couple decades now. They have no off switch, so we just flip the breaker. Leaving it on, will cost us thousands! Why? Because people talk, and when you offload a hundred tons of product in a two day trip, someone at the cannery is taking notes and telling their buddies who now start tracking you, and suddenly, where you were alone before, you suddenly have a half dozen competitors! When crab fishing in the Bering sea, you go to offload and when you return, you may find that someone has dropped their pots in between yours, and cut your production in half! If you want to see human greed at it's maximum, just go fishing! This even applies to those fishing for sport!

Good one Stew, Haven't seen you for a while. Yeah you're right the only thing Remote I D does is create more problems when you take into consideration there is no infrastructure to facilitate transmission and receiving data . Most drones already have a set altitude limitation and distance limit built into them and if you fly either RC planes or drones you're flying below radar and you're not near a commercial airport because there's few to no RC clubs within a dangerous air space Obviously. Would Remote ID apply to RC boats as well because both Sydney and Brisbane airports are right next to water and so to is Wellington airport and I think Auckland as well which could be a security risk if some mad bomber wants to use a remote controlled model boat to create problems. I do believe there is paranoia virus in the Australian government and they need to be immunised with a shot of sanity . if ever there was a more fitting word for it I'd say FASCIST for what we see the government trying to implement for no good reason or cause and is becoming more like China and Russia degrading our freedom and liberties to the extent we no longer want a hobby or recreational pursuits in our free time either with family or friends or even on your own enjoying the air and your surroundings . Hmmm , I'm an old guy and I've seen things and know stuff and I vote to. Also there is no real if any evidence from CASA of any Australian drone pilots or RC plane pilots ever have their planes or drones cause an aircraft of any description to crash. But the media on the other hand have sensationalised from a minor incident which If memory serves me right was a helicopter flying under the height restriction and no aircraft crashed and no person/s were injured or killed .Where I live the local airstrip/airport has planes coming and going every week and their always flying below 500 feet just to line up for the runway so why haven't they had their licenses revoked by CASA ?? Cheers Mate keep up the good word as always.👍👍👍😎💨🏴‍☠☮☮☕☕💡🌈😊

The corporate grab of this space and the increased UAV traffic by big tech is also a major concern for the public… right now hobbyists have the space and share it with the community. With the proposal down the road UAV’s could be flying in a constant stream over roads, parks and private property…. Once this space is stolen getting it back will be tricky / impossible for the general public
Keep the sky in the hands of the public and limit mega corps usage air grab.
This space could be far more useful for primary industry, hobbyists, film production etc… handing it to mega corp (who will want it all) ~ give an inch take a mile is a bad situation for every day people and communities.
Hold out let schools teach the next generation of flight technology without the need for expensive / complex government overreach!
The world is going to need people with hardware and software skills (let them start learning from a young age) with real world problem solving and let’s keep the sky clear for education.
Do you want a doctor operating on you who got a C (pass) or someone who is passionate and got A+
We need to look at the way future technology, coverages and the way computing and electronics will impact our lives overt the next decades / generations.
Handing over the sky today will result in a corporate grab of our important sky.
The force behind all of the remote ID is mega corps seeing a way to make money for shareholders.

Try This --> Reorganize what "drones" are required to comply. Camera Drones in your scenario with full access gimbals, gps, return to home, autonomous flight should comply. Has a free style or racing drone spied on a family bbq or hovered over and airport runway? No. Fixed camera facing up. Tiny Whoop? No. RC Fixed wing planes with simple radio electronics? No. Un powered RC Gliders / Slope Soar / Thermal Gliders? No. RC Heli with standard flight electronics? No. RC Paragliders? No. 1 pound RC Foamy plane? No. All that have been classified as "drones" are not always true drones, nor do they have the ability to be bad actors as drones. First was "voluntary registrations" then mandatory registration". Then there was education that was going to save everyone. Then there was apps that would make it safer. Then there was Network RID, then broadcast RID, but network RID is still not dead and keeps coming up. This was totally a poor risk assessment sold on fear, media drama, and movie DEATH DRONES.... based on NO DEATHS. Then an overbearing engineered plan created by the committees of Full Access Camera Gimbal GPS Autonomous Flight Drone Manufactures and Lobbyists that have money and access to congress and the FAA. What could possibly go wrong? Make the punishment fit the crime? Full Access Camera Gimbal GPS Autonomous Flight Drone have shown up at Airports, back yard bbqs, your daughters bedroom window, sports domes and large commercial gatherings. How about start there, get that under control, look for the "problems that may have been missed" once you are solid with the first most serious risk gap. Common sense Risk mitigation instead of a "I have a hammer and everything looks like a nail" mentality, which government 3 letter agency that WANT FUNDING do. Control ALL = easy button, more funding, broad brush paper pushing and regulations over what could or might happen.

While RID modules may be technically practical in models over 1000 grams, weight distribution constraints would necessitate placing the module close to the radio control (RC) receiver. Since the RC receiver operates in the 2.4Ghz spectrum, the RID module (which is a transmitter which also operates in the 2.4Ghz spectrum) will significantly increase the RF noise that the RC receiver must contend with. This would degrade the quality of the control link, and could adversely affect safety. MAKES NO SENSE.

The remote id module needs a 3rd party gps module as well. Gps is easy AF to spoof, little kids playing pokemon go do it all the time. Just need to get the gps to report a false altitude. If someone's going to take the time and money to do something like this, taking an extra step to report false gps data is not that far fetched.

It's not a license plate, license plates don't transmit their location and the location of their owner all the time. It's an ankle monitor, the thing they put on criminals to keep track of them. We're presumed guilty before committing any crime and without any proof of any crime committed.
If they're doing that with things like firearms, which are responsible for bucketloads of deaths, I could understand (not condone, but I'd understand the reasoning). But drones have zero deaths to their name. Remote ID for all drones is as stupid as making toilet paper out of gympie-gympie leaves

Criminals arent going to put a Law Enforcement Tracker on themselves, that would be stupid. Im afraid it will get worse in September when anyone can buy these trackers and shut down airports and pull all the police to one side of town with the press of a button. Even worse if someone puts one in a bag on a outgoing luggage terminal. When the FAA finds out one is over the airport flying 500 mph they will call the flight back with a fighter jet as an escort because there is "Nefarious Activity" happening on that plane. Over and over in these rules it calls RC piots "nefarious" which means criminally Evil. So either we are all criminals without a trial or thes rules (Laws) were written with hateful words because congress and/or the FAA hates a minority section of the public and wants them gone. Either way it makes these rules UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Theyve been very 'closed lip' about the real reason why cause its not about making the safest hobby safer when its making it less safe and scaring people. Maybe they want to deport us all back to Africa. Maybe congress wants their specialty coffee delivered by a giant drone with 6 motors and 27inch steel blades. A guy will have to deliver the coffee by car to the "DronePort" and your less than 7 miles away, then then can deliver your cold coffee, unless there is wind or air temps are lower than 40%F cause Lipo batteries work at a quarter to a third of normal range when it gets cold and I think we all know what wind does. Drone Deliveries! Coming thru a home near You!!! All the Dogs in your neighborhood wont mind chasing after it so the Dog Pound will have to be in place before the drone gets there to round up any stray pets and any children. Dear Congress and the FAA, You are doing something "Nefarious" and you need to come clean about it

I mean just for safety reasons of cause to find those that leave once they had crashed their car into someone else car
Wouldn't it make sense to raise the drivers attention to that topic cause if they have also to fear the remote ID they will go upset and these are millions not just a few thousands.

I had to stop at around the 5 minute mark as you clearly don't know the current regulations, at least in the US, regarding RID. e.g. there is no network requirement for RID currently even though you state that there is. I suggest that you start over. Spend a little time understanding the regulations and then make a new video. I'm sure it will be valuable to the community.

    • @kenledgend
      @kenledgend Год назад

I agree. A little bit of googling shows that it will be applicable to drones over 250g, so your micro drones should be fine. Also, while there appears to be "network remote id" which may need connectivity to a network, the general remote ID looks to be a simple broadcast (like Bluetooth Advertising) which does not require a network. When you logically think about it, a network based solution could not work anyway. As for cost, the transmitters can be simple and low power, so could be made fairly cheaply. Many of your arguments are good though.

Plus, part 107 holders like myself cannot fly over the 400' threshold and must comply with airspace restrictions based upon what class of airspace we are in. It seems like a bad idea, especially for hobby fliers. I guess thank those that have posted their stupid videos flying up into IFR airspace and close to airports. Moreover; when conducting a Google search on drone strikes what comes up is revealing; every single answer is about US military drones hitting some target and nothing about drone strikes here at home. On the other hand; when conducting a search on bird strikes; the amount of data, is astonishing; it revealed that bird strikes are a daily factor our national as well as every other country airspace. So; it can be safely concluded that the real threat here are not hobby drones but birds free roaming in the skies doing exactly what nature intended them to do, nothing more; unless anyone is willing to spend time, money, and resources to train every single bird out there in learning their boundaries, which is a lousy and stupid idea; but instead; bureaucrats have turn to the ones they can control; us; because of money'; not safety'

Are you familiar with the Recreational Exemption that provides for flying sub-250 gram drones (including tiny whoops) just for fun without the necessity of registration, no remote ID required, and no Part 107 pilot's license. So, it is actually not accurate to say that a tiny whoop must be fitted with remote ID. It does not unless you are going to use it for commercial purposes. So, remote ID is short range Wi-Fi or Bluetooth which shouldn't effect aircraft from a taxi. This is just a pure act of terrorism and could be accomplished with any number of other devices. The thing is, the position of the drone will be known, but the location of the pilot would not. Is all of this a lot of unsubstantiated speculation. Hovering that drone over my property and back yard is an invasion of my privacy. Where was all of the resistance 3 years about when this was started. You kid should be flying under the Recreational Exemption and not needing remote ID. Why do people NOT mention this. You don't need Remote ID on the tiny whoops if flown for recreation.
