" Parallel Lines "
Kindred spirits moving along the spiral
I can see you up on another level
It's too great a fall
And I can't reach you to pull me higher
But I don't seem to get much closer or any more far
What would you tell me, if I could hear you speaking?
If you could touch me, how would I know the feeling?
I just can't imagine
But I try to do it anyway
I wish I was moving faster, I wish you'd drift back
But it just wasn't meant to happen
Very soon I'll have to
Face the fact
Some things never come together
Parallel lines running on forever
And you can't turn back
There is never any starting over
Parallel lines never do cross over
It's a challenge
Gotta make myself remember
Facing the truth, well, that doesn't mean surrender
What is bravado and how much is a force of will?
I know that the world is full of opposites that attract
But unless we ignore the physics
Very soon we'll have to
Face the fact
Some things never come together
Parallel lines running on forever
And you can't turn back
There is never any starting over
Parallel lines never do cross over
(So I send you the gift of empathy)
(If you'd once in your life acknowledge me)
(I have visualized so thoroughly)
(That when I think of me I think of we) -- Les N Lyle
Can't face the truth
It means that we must surrender
Understanding won't satisfy the hunger
It whittles away at the destiny we fulfill
And like an animal running wild
You can't call it back
And it's just gonna make it harder
When it's finally time to
Face the fact
Some things never come together
Parallel lines running on forever
And you can't turn back
There is never any starting over
Parallel lines never do cross over
Parallel lines never do cross over
It's like a train that's stuck running on a track
Parallel lines running on, running on, running on

Why .... WHY. How .. HOW, was this song never a top 10 hit???
Todd's voice is in fine condition here. Love this song so much. Love Todd so much.
I like this version better than the recorded one. One of his best, innit?
He was easily in the best voice of his life here. Just jaw-dropping.
Elise M - ABSOLUTELY agree..I have watched this/ listened many times..
( VHS, and time for me to get it on DVD) Great show, one of my favorite songs!!
I’m in a trance, so beautiful
staggering. No one better . Love Darrlyhall but he cant hold a candle to him.
Like others said, most people missed this song. Unbelievable!
I confess... I listened to this song about 20 times today. Todd Rundgren is extremely under rated. For the Music Hall of Fame, put your big boy pants on and give him the award he so sorely deserves. ( I got to see him live with Ringo Starr last fall. Best evening ever.)
I've seen him more than any other performer. Truly part of the soundtrack to my life.
He's being inducted this year! About time eh?!
Once I start watching this, I have trouble stopping.
@@jamestiley2663 Todd couldn't care less- Look into that dear fellow fan❤
@@MissNYWF I’m stunned after watching it. I’ve been listening to it at work and in the car last couple days and stumbled on the video
When the drums and bass kick in that song goes from great to glorious. Such a beautiful song. A lot of his songs are just beautiful.
This is one of Todd's finest songs, and what a wonderful performance.
Heard that Brother!!!
+Joe LaRoche Amen..... I've loved this song since it was first released..... so much passion and feeling....
brought me to my knees...
how blessed we are to have this man singing in our lives..
I have found that I turn to the runt for great songs my SOUL NEEDS..
That’s a fact right there! Loved him since the early 70’s
Thank god for Todd Rundgren. And this song. This one means so much to me at this point in my life.
I got chills every time I listen to this version. What a stunning performance.
I have heard a lot of Todd and seen him live several times. I believe this is some of the best Todd there is, and I think he would agree. He feels it, we all feel it here. One of a kind.
Bobby Standal ABSOLUTELY 💯
Hello, and hope you like this..
Love this version. But OMG the hair on that host.
Such a beautiful heart wrenching song. God I love Todd.
OH MY GOD TODD SO GOOD>>>>>
So much better than the studio version on the sadly horribly produced Nearly Human album. But, here’s Todd in all his brilliance. No-one and I mean no-one can bring to a song the emotional intensity and passion that Todd could when he was at his peak. Simply a king of blue-eyed soul.
I can't stand the studio version. His voice rings so clearly in this performance.
This particular version of this song makes my the thoughts in my mind just melt.
What a fluttering, mind altering song.
Makes my heart cry in so many ways.
Part of Todd's genius is that he can compose a lyric and melody that get stuck in your head. This is one of those songs.
It always feels that he sings directly to us as individuals. I’m sure he doesn’t imagine that, it’s his attention to the moment that comes across.
This turned out to be the best song off one of his sleeper albums, that kinda snuck up and bit all of us long-time Rundgren fans on the butt .... Nearly Human is a masterpiece, and this is the centerpiece.
+Jeff Flinn This song is devastating.
Jeff Flinn, Funny because it's true. A lot of Todd's stuff takes a minute...My wife is a foreigner from the Philippines. It took her a while to catch up. We are Todd fans- It separates us from the goddamn animals!
Jeff Flinn the album is by his most complete collection of quality 1970's Todd Rundgren Singer-Songwriter, only 10 years later, my friends cried, it was like having a childhood friend return, I'm 54, Todd's /Pop/Whiite Boy R&B songs, he would run from this, didn't want to be associated with just one niche, but my God, he can do it soooooo well! Only one that comes close are Hall & Oates more grown up tracks, yet pop perfection "Wait For Me", or "Everything Your Heart Desires", they're actually good friends, and Daryl and John respect Todd's influence... I return to Todd's song a lot and this album was so great for white boy soul music in 1989, like sophisticated Black R&B dance with "Soul II Soul" with Caron Wheeler and "Loose Ends" "Don't Be A Fool"... Closed out the decade nicely with otherwise so much synth and artificial... Cheers Todd Rundgren and "Nearly Human" album!
There were very few dogs on "Nearly Human." About the only song I regularly skip is the last one, "I Love My Life." My favorites were "Want of a Nail," this one, "Fidelity" and "Hawking."
Agreed, Jeff! But the studio version's more uptempo delivery and cheery, synth-y arrangement blunts the effect. I love that version, but this live performance simply transcends everything.
“Nearly Human” was the first CD I ever bought, but the song that makes my heart soar would always be “Parallel Lines”, particularly this performance. This show went under two titles, “Night Music” and “Sunday Night”, both hosted by Dave Sanborn.
I heard this song during the separation from my wife. The lyrics expressed what I felt. Beautyful performance. I watched it dozends of times...
Nothing better than this. Painfully beautiful.
If songs as moving as this are still being written/where are they ???!!!###
So true..but it hurts at first. Todd demonstrates the skill it takes to sing, understand , relate, and I always think its a personal reach out from a faraway star. He personally relates while talking about the distance between.
I had just seen this a few months ago, and it is really a wonderful rendition of a wonderfully underrated and underheard song. Elegant and melancholy all at once.
This song will always be about the guy that got away... he was one of my best friends AND a Rundgren fan. It was also a nice bonus that he resembled young Todd ! But some things never come together. I do miss him though...
True .....it makes me think of the future wife that got away
@@RavenMadd9 For me it was my sweet friend. I was so in love ... with a lesbian.
Wonderful lyrics. Wish we could get more youngsters to listen to Todd.
I wonder who Todd’s muse was for this song. It’s bittersweet and not one of his most popular, but I love it. I was fortunate enough to speak with him on a cruise in early spring of 2020. One night midweek, my friend and I were late coming back from dinner on our way to some concert. She was upset that we were missing some of the show but I told her to have faith and that “we’re right where we’re supposed to be”. At that moment, we turned a corner and guess who was standing there? He was the sole motivating factor for my going on the cruise. But I so hope he didn’t get sick because more than half the ship got Covid, including me. 😢 Most everyone said later that they’d never been that sick before. (We have a FB group)
His (later) wife, Michele Gray.
Yo, Toddzilla!!! - If you ever make it down to the Ohio river and Ironton?! - I wanna have a beer and party with you, dude!!! - lol - let’s compare Todd Bootlegs, dude!
Cheers! - Judson & Buddy!! - God bless you ALL!!! :-)
Sheer genius.
wonderful version
Such beautiful vocals. Nice to hear it without the backing for a change. Love this.
One of my favorites 💗🕊️
What a superior voice.
Oh my god, It's Todd!
Beautiful! I've appreciated Todd since the 70's. Thanks for posting this great tune!
I LOVE this song! I wish he'd sing it live.
Amazing artist. Love you Todd!
Todd is the man ! ...what an awesome performance
It's: "Todd id Godd" , get it right. :)
Saw Todd live in Ventura County the music was brilliant and entertaining and thought provoking.
Todd is Godd
wowza! pure genius.our Wizard♡☆
OK, OK, OK...a weird way to draw a moment of beauty into a life...
no one else can live it...just remember
"where ur mind is there u are" and it will make a difference whatever happens...
I Recorded Night Music on VHS-He Pours his Heart into This ONE!
That was beautiful!
Love TODD
My FAVORITE!
Stripped of the 1980's synthesizer heavy arrangement on the Nearly Human album, this becomes a real showpiece for Todd's songwriting and singing. Gives me chills every time I hear it. Nice to see the future Michele Rundgren as well as Utopia alum Kasim Sulton on the background vocals. (BTW, the last two lines of the lyrics in the doobly doo are only on the original Nearly Human CD version). This program should have never been cancelled. If the UK can have Later with Jools Holland why can't we have a decent music show too?
I watched Night Music from the beginning, and I discovered many new artists there. I knew Todd from his earlier work, but when I saw this appearance, I was blown away.
I bought "Nearly Human" based on this performance, but was really disappointed by what I called "calliope music", i.e. 80's synth-heavy arrangement. I'll always prefer this version/
Bruce Righter It's not the synthesizer's fault. They are only as good as the programmer (and player). Todd's was sometimes his own worst enemy in the studio. He liked to record as if he was mixing a live show. adding all the effects and filtering to the tracks as they are recorded. It doesn't leave much room for improvement during the mixing process. I think that's why a lot of his 80's stuff sounds so thin and flat. Oddly, he always sounded better live. Even though I like the original, this is so much better..
LOVE!
Pure genius. Period. A completely unreal vocalist and writer. My God! Hey, anyone know who the piano player is in this clip?
The story of my life! = = = = = = = = =
Leo on the piano tryin’ to get a new pir of shoes.
Todd back in his day--man has he changed--i can't understand a word when he sings now--to bad
What is Les N Lyle?
Who plays the piano ?
I'm thinking it was either the late Vince Melnick or Brent Bourgeois of Bourgeois Tagg. Todd had just produced "Yoyo" for them and they ended up becoming part of his live band.
@@cubdukat It's not either of them -- although those are two excellent guesses. I don't know who it is, but ... not Vince or Brent.
Philippe Saisse, piano accompaniment. Amongst David's great house band
Hey todd,wheres my money.
who's the glorified pianist trying to steal the show from Todd - jesus F Christ...
