    Great job. I have seen a lot of home made trailers but the main fault with most is folks seem to ignore the important weight issue and use quite heavy gauge steel throughout without much limitation which must be a huge burden to move whereas your design smartly makes use of a skeletal alloy frame with wood bed panels. Probably the smartest home made trailer design yet.

    I just built a DIY thru-axle bicycle trailer using a ladder. It's simpler than you think. However ...an idea to keep in-mind, is to keep your trailer's width no more than the width of your handlebars ;)

    I would have moved the wheels farther back; the center of weight needs to be in front of the wheels, or the trailer will whiplash around behind the bike. Ask me how I know... but there are also videos out there showing the effect of shifting the center of weight forward and back on a trailer as it is towed.

    I have no doubt that these work but what the cost? Most I've seen are are in the $350-400 range but the videos did help. A kids bike, bed railing and a shelf from the thrift store puts it in the$40-50 range if a person is handy and has tools.

    Hi ! Me i'm about to create one with a pulling bar right under my seat. The pulling bar will be made of 1 1/2'' square stainless steel bar (that's what i could find at my local scrapyard). Since the pulling bar will be VERY powerful for the trailer maximum total capacity (150 pounds). Using the same dimensions for the trailer (50 x 24 inches), would it be wise to fix the wheels 4 inches further back instead of fixing them right in the center of the trailor ? I took in consideration the design of most trailers. My local bike merchant designed a trailer bike few years back that he tried to put on the market. He told me firmly that bicycles were design to pull in strait line. So it's not recommended to put a side pulling bar on the rear wheel.

    • @CrazyUncleTim
      @CrazyUncleTim  8 лет назад +1

      I put my wheels a little bit towards the back of the trailer instead of in the center. I can't say I know the perfect way to mount the hitch.

    • @neilyaremchuk6798
      @neilyaremchuk6798 7 лет назад

      So how would you modify the mount to fix to the middle of the bike versus off center?

    • @prepperquebecois403
      @prepperquebecois403 7 лет назад +3

      I used a 6 inches long pipe and i insert it under my seat. Then, i welded the pipe to a 28 inches long 1 1/2'' square stainless steel bar. At the end of this bar, i welded the 360 degree locking mechanism. For the 360 degree locking mechanism i used a 1/2 '' universal joint socket and a 1/4'' pneumatic air quick fitting connectors. (ebay items: 262884412164 and 311672104659).
      Now that my trailer design project is finish. When i go out with it, many people are staring at my trailer where ever i go. It fonction amazingly well.

    Hi Tim, I know I’m late to the party but I wonder if you could tell me what drill bit you used to drill the holes and what size and type of screws you used. Your build inspired me to get a Wike diy Kit so I can take my dogs with me when I ride.

    • @CrazyUncleTim
      @CrazyUncleTim  5 лет назад +2

      Unfortunately I do not recall the size of the screws or bolts, and I just donated the trailer to an outdoor/travel group. I think I got the size from a WIKE assembly video. I used carriage bolts for the wood to have a smooth surface. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

    • @juliansleath1989
      @juliansleath1989 2 года назад

      I have just built one - the main bolts from Wike are 1/4inch so I used a 17/64inch bit. For the #10 self tappers I start a hole with an 1/8inch drill bit. Worked for me at any rate :-)

  • @gabefitzwater1807
    @gabefitzwater1807 8 лет назад

    A little confused with the #14-1" self tapping screws. Do I need to drill THROUGH the plastic on the corner pieces when attaching my bottom bars? Kind of thought they would be pre drilled like every other connection. Plus I can only find #10-1,1/2" self tapping screws. Will they be too long for the axle corners? Don't want to drill into the cavity and mess something up. Thanks

    • @CrazyUncleTim
      @CrazyUncleTim  8 лет назад +1

      As I remember all the holes were pre-drilled except for those two bars. For those where I had to drill through the plastic pieces, I used self-tapping screws. I would check the length of the screws before drilling. As long as they don't go near the metal bearing assembly I think they will be fine.

    • @CrazyUncleTim
      @CrazyUncleTim  8 лет назад +1

    I'm looking to start a small business as a mobile lemonade stand for the summer months. This is by far the best design for the money that I have seen. This would allow me to be agile in the ways that even food trucks cannot. Plus, I could use the exercise. How would I add rails to perhaps box it in if that's even necessary?

    • @CrazyUncleTim

      Sounds like a good idea. When I lived in Phoenix I thought about putting a big ice chest on the trailer and going down to the ballpark to sell water and soda on the sidewalk. You can build the trailer to whatever dimensions work best for you. The company also sells trailers already built. It's possible to slow the video down.
      Click the little settings gear icon in the lower right hand corner of the video frame.
      Then click "Speed".
      It can go as slow as 1/4 speed.
