Hello, Mazzy. I am a fan of your videos, have been following you for a couple of years now and I'm always innarested in seeing what you have come up with when there's a new video from you out there. However, there's one thing that bugs me, and I'm not really one of those "you didn't get this and you didn't get that" - but, and I have heard you getting this fact wrong before, so, I am asking myself: How come you, after all these years, have failed to get the fact that Bootleg Series Vol 4 (love that vinyl edition!) was not, I repeat, not recorded at The Royal Albert Hall. I mean haven't you noticed the quotation marks on the cover, the record was issued in 1998. People, I mean the bootleggers, even the guys at CBS, got it wrong in the 1970s when the bootleggers got hold of the tapes (of the electric section). Trade Mark of Quality named it Live at Royal Albert Hall, since that is what it said on the tape box. But since then, everybody and his grandmother, except you, dear Maslow, have got the fax straight that the concert on Bootleg Series Vol. 4 was taped in Manchester at The Free Trade Hall. This is not nitpicking, Mazzy, this is like saying that WW2 began in 1941. However, keep up your otherwise good work. But I am watching you.

This was a lovely overview of the Bootleg Series. I wasn't fully aware of it until now, but I have all of them, although perhaps not every one in its largest version. This was a good reminder that I've got to go back and listen again to some of the older ones I haven't heard in a while. I really didn't have any quibbles until the very end, when you said you thought that Vol. 16, Springtime in NY, was the least successful in your estimation. I have the 5 CD version, and I consider it to be one of the best collections of the series, which is obviously saying a lot. I think they might have left some of the best stuff off the shorter versions. Anyway, thanks for this video.

This is a fantastic release! Some songs are really interesting to hear in an early stage. The Lanois mix is really ok but I really liked how they´ve lifted Bob´s voice and some instruments higher up in the mix. I loved the last one to, the NYC recordings. So, buy ém all! Columbia seems to have opened up a window to release a 1976 or 1978 Bootleg Series as I´ve heard. We´ll see...

Thanks for sharing your passion. I like the Lanois approach, which results in his beautiful sound and feel. Mark Howard deserves mention as engineer (also producer) His book “Listen Up” offers interesting insight into Time sessions chasing the old sound Bob wanted. (Hint: it involves a cassette deck shaping the sound. ) Quantity of tracks on these sets are often too much but some do shine. I own Great White Way some of the first Dylan vinyl boots but no turntable. Maybe I should sell them to collector who would love them, here they collect dust. ;-)

I have seen Bob live 3 times in Australia & the 1st show in the early 70`s ! In Brisbane Australia 1975 ! It was the 1st time he ever did an encore! They turned the lights off at Festival Hall in front of only 5000 Folks & the mc said the show is over can every one please Leave ! we all jumped up & down for 10 Minutes or so ! & lo & behold , Dylan came back by himself with Guitar & Harp the 1st time ever he did a encore & I still get goose pumps when I here those songs he sang that Night ! if you don`t believe look it up ! You need to do a sequel which showcases the the multiple box sets that protected copyrights - 1963, 1964,1965, (all released in extremely limited quantities), plus the more easily available Bob Dylan 1970 (which is a good companion piece to Another Self Portrait and features George Harrison). P.S. The Real Royal Albert Hall set was eventually officially released as a stand alone and as part of the box set that contained every concert on the UK tour. (You could include that box set in your sequel video, plus the box set of shows from the Rolling Thunder Review tour too). Nuclearmagenta loves you!

    Subtle Point:
I don't think the Witmark Demos are similar to The Basement Tapes in intention or sound because the scenarios were very different. The Basement Tapes were more of exploring what a band could do with Dylan songs, teasing out parts, developing the songs over time. It was a boy's club mentality, working at one's own pace, kind of 'living the music' day by day, with little concern for deadlines.
Meanwhile, the Witmark Demos were just something Dylan had to do for his publisher. He'd play the basic version of the song, lyrics & guitar chords, so that they could be listened to & transposed into sheet music by professionals schooled in taking what they heard on the tape & writing it out into individual notes & chords on a musical staff for other musicians to read & play. They weren't meant as real 'performances' as such, which is why most of them (if my recollection is correct) are absent Dylan's trademark harmonica at the time. Since they were just to get the song down in sheet music form, the harmonica parts (when & where he'd play it) were not yet set in stone or decided upon. He'd wait for the proper studio session for the album to do that.
I guess what I'm saying is that The Basement Tape sessions were more creative, taking place in a creative studio environment. But the WItmark Demos is just Dylan going into the publisher's studio & giving them the song in a very basic recorded form, lyrics & chord accompaniment. Those songs were made more as a 'sound document' to get them written into a musical form for publishing purposes. I don't consider them real recordings or performances that are going for dramatic effects or any urgency that are present in even Dylan's acoustic songs.

And he must have been extremely proud that Elvis covered two of this songs too even though Elvis probably covered covers :-). I'm sure Dylan loved many other versions too, Byrds of course, Fairport Convention, and Nina Simone, lord.... maybe even hundred others, who knows. Cheers! :-)

Hi Mazzy, I'm new to this and have become, in fairly recent weeks, a sort-of "born again" Dylan fan. I've loved "those three" (Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde On Blonde) of course, since back in the day (and know his earlier "protest" stuff from back then too) but I have also loved John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline and Self Portrait too so great to hear that you also like rate it highly. It's wonderful and so evocative of the time for me and as for Another Self Portrait... it's even better! Travelling' Thru too. /// I'd not listened to Bob much after Blood On The Tracks / Desire but by chance I found the single disc version of Tell Tale Signs very cheap on a market stall - and I just fell in love all over again! Have since bought all of the bootleg series and most of the stuff I missed first time around. What a trip! The Rolling Thunder stuff has become my favourite period (at the moment!) - the 2-disc Bootleg Series version and the 14-disc box set. Phenomenal! /// Anyway, I just wanted to say that I agree with everything you say here regarding the bootleg series and to share with you my "return", my "revival", my "reincarnation" (if you will!) of my re-discovery of all things Bob. What a guy! Thanks for reinforcing my revived interest even further. I'm almost 70 years old and I never thought Dylan would mean so much to me again.

Great video…… I haven’t watched any you tube video’s after Mofigate but you really nail the series here. Biograph in 1985 got me back in to Dylan and IMO started the whole bootleg series. I agree with you on Vol 1-3 and Vol 4. But it was Tell Tale Signs that turned my head around. Bob keeps being relevant with each release. Caught your studio review video and I appreciate your objectivity…..sharing favorites yet open to alternative opinions. Thanks again.

I prefer to just do the CDs when it comes to the bootleg series. Though I might get the the 2LP set just to have the possibly stripped down Album. But i've already pre-ordered the 5 cd set. I"m really excited for that. I wish The Beatles had a bootleg series. Though yes now they kinda do with these Giles Martin Deluxe boxsets. But if they had started years earlier maybe around the time of Anthology. And 3 career spanning Anthology albums could have been the equivalent to a sample CD. Again with what we are getting now, with the boxsets the Anthology albums pretty much are. I do buy the CD and Vinyl when it comes to The Beatles. The Bob Dylan in mono vinyl is really nice!

Great breakdown Mazzy, and I knew it was coming from you :) I'm stoked for this archival release, like you I love Time Out of Mind. I do wish the 4lp set skipped the remix (I love the Lanois mix) and the 4 lps were all alt versions or outtakes. The 10 lp is just too cumbersome for me and I don't think I'd listen to it much but it contains the stuff I wanna hear. Just some thoughts.

Thx, Mazzy! I didn’t realize the 10 LP was restricted to Bob’s store - got it preordered before sold out.
Live 1964 is also the only Bootleg Series I lack on vinyl. Cutting Floor Complete is truly amazing.

Hey Mazz - thanks for the overview of the series. I jumped on 1-3 when it debuted and have picked up subsequent series on cd. The one I've really wanted was The Cutting Edge and your take here encouraged me to go push the 'purchase' button. So thanks for that. I will be getting the TOOM release but probably not the 10 disk version. Anyway - thanks again. Great resource you are.

Is it my imagination or is it actually the case that both outtakes "Dreamin' Of You" and "Marchin' To The City" are not included?
If that's the case then, I suppose "Fragments" is a fairly apt title.

A nice overview of the Bootleg Series . I only have a few of them , including the Live 1975 and the Tell Tale Signs ( which I like more every time that I hear it )
I was lucky enough to see the Rolling Thunder Revue show at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto in 1975 . Mr. Dylan kindly invited Gordon Lightfoot to take part in the concert , and , of course , Joni Mitchell . It was a terrific show . I also enjoy the concert footage in the Rolling Thunder Revue documentary that came out a few years ago , as it brings back great memories of that concert . Thanks for showing the whole set . Cheers !

Hey Mazzy - Like you I love all the Bob Bootleg sets and the care and attention that goes into curating them. If I am honest I probably listen to them more than the original albums - and I listen to them a lot👂. Unlike some tracks that might appear on big boxsets and are sometimes wart's and all noodlings, that can be a fascinating insight to the germination of song construction but can be a little tiring after the 10th listen, Bob's bootleg series all by and large seem to stand as complete songs in themselves, in a old light through new windows kind of way. To all the naysayers I think that they are pretty good value - many of the tracks on that final CD were released on the third disc of the crazily expensive (an exception to the series) 3 CD set version of 'Telltale Signs'(as I remember you seemed to be paying a lot for a whole heap of postcards plus only one extra disc -subsequently at the time I passed and went with the 2 CD set). Like you say they should be included for historical continuity. I know TTS is a bit of a mish-mash, but it is still one of my favourite sets, and 'Cross the Green Mountain', for me at least, is up there with 'Blind Willie McTell' for emotional chills. (I know it bombed box office wise but I am a big 'Gods and Generals' fan - the Scorsese 'Rolling Thunder Revue- A Bob Dylan Story' - on Netflix - is also very good and kicks 'Renaldo and Clara' to the kerb). Thanks for another great video Mazzy. Like you I've preordered the my big boxset, though in CD format - pleased I'm not a vinyl guy as they are asking over NZD$200 here- about USD$125 - for just the 4 vinyl disc set!). Cheers ✌

1st Feb 64, Dylan's on CBC-TV in Toronto doing The Times, WWIII Blues, Hattie Carroll and Hard Rain's - touching on ALL angles. 25 Feb, he's on Steve Allen's show on NBC doing Hattie Carroll. Then in May, he's over in England - who refused to touch Vietnam with a barge pole, if you remember, and he's doing With God on Our Side. His entire set at Royal Festival Hall on 17 May was at least 12 protest songs from the 18 played.
Besides, how many protest songs did you expect him to write on the same protest? That said, he did write a few more and you'll find them on the Another Side album of August 64. You'll also find a whole load in the concert setlists of his Sep-Nov 64 US shows. And continuing into his sets on US shows in the first half of 65 and later, again over in England.
You should be about busted out now, eh?
