The night crew scetch gets me every time. Imagine if there is a primitive humanoid civilsation on that planet. They woudl tell legends of a devine green light carving the sacred canyon or whatever. Once again, Robot Chicken does raise an unanswered question, in this case, as to who takes over when the senior officers need to sleep.
C PT Junior officers take control, usually with a senior officer or bridge officer in command. We see this on Voyager. Ensign Kim takes command of the other junior officers, until he fuck everything up
The TNG episode Data's Day answers that question. Data commands the night shift since he doesn't need to sleep.

It is an homage, with a dash of Seth's humor sprinkled in. Perhaps parodic homage would be the best way to put it.
I’d say Orville is like Galaxy Quest in that whilst that was the unofficial 14th Star Trek, The Orville is the unofficial 12th Star Trek series because both capture the vibe and feel of the franchise so well whilst parodying the hell out of it

The night crew sounds like a fun concept. There is something called "Lower Decks" that's similar but which can also be more serious.
Captain Picard will always be the best captain! He is diplomatic and loves his speeches but he ain't afraid to roll up his sleeves and punch you in the mouth. He also laughed when a Nausican stabbed him thru the heart.

The pilot episode begins with them getting the virus that makes everyone act drunk but they just simply don't notice the difference
