Amazes me still that this movie full of talking animals delivers the 'discrimination bad' message better than most adult live-actions.
It's often in the execution. Adult live-actions are typically pretty aware of their more mature audience and tend to give out lessons like promo pamphlets at a salon: very flat-handed with subtext we have to figure out on our own.
Movies like Zootopia that are geared towards kids have to instill that message into their younger audience to make a lasting impact without slapping it in their faces, so they make the story engaging and fun to follow and drop hints of the issues along the way with ways to fix them.
The formula's worked for youngsters, and it evidently still works on adults too. We all have that one kids movie that's either always stuck with you as a kid or you found as an adult, but we love those movies regardless. And it matters a whole lot when those movies bear themes that are relevant today.
Is it bad tho
Yeah, but the message is STUPID AF, since no matter what, CARNIVORES WILL ALWAYS BE CARNIVORES. They should have found a better way to get the message across than trying to change BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE. Like the mental defects that say their dog or cat is vegan.
@@Hadrian9707 Except it doesn't when you consider the context of Nick's back story? He gave up trying to be anything else because he felt no matter what he did the world was still just going to treat him the same regardless (it's just a scene of Nick following that philosophy that doesn't inherently condoning it in context). It's the same argument about how the day is actually saved thanks to Judy profiling Nick based on species, so racism technically fixed the problem! Only that there was only a problem in the first place because of racism and someone trying to exploit that system because they had also been put down by the exact same system. There's no credit for fixing a problem you created, and much less if there were other net negatives in the meantime.
@@memelord3117 sometimes, yeah
"Life isn't some cartoon musical where you sing a little song and insipid dreams magically comes true, so *let it go* "
That Frozen reference went over your heads. Oh yeah and Nick's partner in crime "Finnick" is Debo from *Friday* .
And since it didn't make it in the video, I guess the Duke Weaselton reference flew over their heads too.
RIP Deebo
HolyShit I Didn't Know That Was Debo😳
IT MY BIKE NOW PUNK! Lol
I disagree that Gideon's character development was unneeded. It presents a less black-and-white image of people and shows that people can change as they get older, and seeing his turnaround, with Gideon being her childhood bully around which her own implicit biases were based, showed her that she, in turn, could be better and not be defined by her worst mistake. And both Gideon's and Judy's apologies were pretty awesome. We don't see many GOOD apologies in media and as we start to see more, maybe people will start to learn what a good apology looks like and learn how to do it in a more compassionate and sincere way. Because for real... it's HARD to take ownership like that.
Yes, I like this moment because I was bullied at school and I always dreamt to have excuses of my okd classmates
It's amazing how much can be said without saying. When Gideon delivers his apology, he is very clearly parroting his therapist (about "self-doubt" and "agression" and so on), before adding one bit from his heart ("I was a major jerk"). Which, I guess, resulted from some parent at school - maybe even Hoppses - contacting HIS parents about his bullying. Mr and Mrs Grey were probably horrified to find out their beloved Gideon is a bully, and got him some professional help.
Sooo True❤
I *believe* that the only humanoid-type animals in Zootopia would be mammals. Therefore, non-mammals would be the carnivores' diet. Birds, fish, insects, lizards, amphibians...
Excellent point.
@@lightlord356 That's how it was handled (with one exception) in the Spellsinger book series.
I believe the story writers actually specifically said it was insects (since apparently in some places in the Zootopia world, there are non-mammal humanoid animals, particularly in the Bird, Lizard and Amphibian types, as well as most Zootopians having agreed apparently in the past that they wouldn't eat anything that could potentially gain intelligence on their level (which gives marine life the pass.)) So herbivores subsist on a variety of plants and plant foods, but most predators have agreed on only eating insects or products made from insects as to not sacrifice one of their neighbors on a daily basis, which leads to the weird question of how processed must predator food be, since there are so many plants and fruits in comparison to insects, so if a predator wants to eat something that tastes different, 90% of their food has got to be seriously processed versus Herbivores.
@@greenpiersystem Well, consider how they said even the city of Zootopia itself is 10% predators and 90% prey. Now combine that with how many predators can easily subsist on an omnivore diet (and many even require it, like bears, badgers, foxes...)- so really, quantity shouldn't be a problem. As for taste, you can use many spices, fruits, vegetables and other plants to provide different flavors for a protein-rich meal! But yeah, lots of processing would come into play :p
I think that the carnivores just eat fish and bugs. I hope to see birds and reptiles more in the future Zootopia projectd
funfact: there's is a fan theory explaining why flash out of everyone would be drive so fast. the reason is he moves so slow, his foot is constantly pressed down on the gas pedal.
He seemed to stop pretty good, though.
From what I understand you nailed it... the predators eat fish. If you look back over the movie, all of the evolved animals are mammals, so fish are still JUST fish. Also, a fun FYI, Mr Big is an Arctic Shrew, a species that frequently eats twice it's body weight everyday due to their very high metabolisms... a fierce predator indeed thank goodness they are so small.
I be shitting myself if the shrew was polar bear sized
@@vaporean_boylove.0w083 You mean honeybadgers. If those things can square up a group of lions by themselves imagine what they could do the size of a polar bear. Them joints ain't a joke
@@Mothobius
We dead if they ever get any bigger. We fucked!
According to the filmmakers, the carnivore citizens do not eat other mammals because the dietary supplements for them are fish, plant protein and insects, since fish and bugs are not sapient. The city also has a fast-food restaurant chain named Bug-Burga, which caters insect-based cuisine for this need.
The information was stated confirmed by three of the filmmakers on their twitter. Sadly RUclips doesnt let me post the links.
Fun fact: Ginnifer Goodwin, who voices Judy, played Snow White on the TV show Once Upon A Time, where she met her husband, Josh Dallas, who played Prince Charming. Josh Dallas voices the pig who’s shop is robbed by the weasel. 💛
By the way guys, in case you didn't know, the choice to make Mr Big a pygmy shrew was absolutely brilliant. They are one of the most vicious mammals in existence, and need to eat so much in a day, they actually resort to cannibalism if they can't find enough otherwise.
Ah, you learnt me a thing
imagine if he ate his grandmama
@@lov1na716 For his species, I would not say it's impossible.
10:26 Chief Bogo wears glasses in this scene because Cape Buffaloes in real life have poor eyesight.
The predators get their protein from fish and insects. When Judy is passing through Tundratown you can see a building marked "Fishtown Market." And in the alley scene you can see a fast-food wrapper marked "Bug Burger."
Slimey but satisfying.
There are a lot of people pushing for all of us to eat bugs because they emit less methane than cows and can bed fed foods than are not suitable for larger livestock.
I've tried them. Meal worms are disgusting but my husband says crickets taste like sunflower seeds.
@@alyshaharper8730 Yeah if they ever replaced meat with bugs I will just be vegan. And I like bugs too.
@@alyshaharper8730Lion King? Slimey but satisfying?
Second-favorite modern Disney film, after 2021's Encanto. I highly recommend Osmosis Jones, Iron Giant, Treasure Planet, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and so on.
Encanto was AWESOME! Especially the music.
2011-2016 were my favorite years
I love Treasure Planet!!
osmosis jones so underrated and a solid cast/story glad to see a person actually bring it up.
Don’t forget about me!
Big names in this, too - Jason Bateman, Tommy Chong, J.K. Simmons, Idris Alba....just amazing. And they really wrote an impressive storyline. LOVED watching you guys watch this!
This was an excellent surrogate for implied bias and equality. Love this movie!
Don't forget the fennec fox was played by the late Tiny Lister Jr. (aka Deebo from Friday)
@@ZakiyaMariposa Tiny Lister was an absolute legend. One of my favorites was when he played the president in Fifth Element.
А у нас в России Ника и Джуди озвучивали Маша ивакова и Антон Лаврентьев
the writer of zootopia actually verified that the animals eat fish, plants and insects along with other non animal related foods
The best thing about the story is that you can change it from animals to humans, and it'll still work.
no it doesnt, because in this allegory predators = coloured folks or marginalized races, and they are shown as 'evolving' out of the need to hunt or eat meat, which means that at some point they were predators. Black folks and other minorities aren't predisposed, and never were a danger to other races, they never evolved into something better- they have always been human. This film, when you really try to follow that racism thing through just doesn't tracks and gets more messy and problematic when you try to view it through that lens.
The reason Mr. Big was a crime boss is because Arctic Shrew (I think) have some sort of venom gland, and can actually eat each other if need be, they also need to consume _multiple_ times their weight if they want to survive
So yeah, they're pretty scary
18:34 I love the subtle shock reaction, he realizes "Oh damn, I might have actually DONE THAT".
You guys 110% need to react to the Netflix movie, Klaus. It's gorgeous and an instant classic in my opinion.
I agree ! I watched for the first time this Christmas . It’s amazing!
Definitely
YAAAASSS! My new favorite Xmas movie!
Next december
A good kids movie of recent was "Soul". I was surprised by how much I liked it.
A good R-rated movie that I always felt was underrated that you should watch is "The Devils Advocate "
Young Nick was too adorable in the scouting flashback scene. Have you guys seen the animated movie 'Rango? I think it would benefit from your reaction.
Judy's parents: "Well, we gave up on our dreams, and we settled."
"Oh, losers. Okay."
You guys are awesome 😂
I love all of the adult movie/show references in this movie. Like Mr. Big and the Godfather, and then the whole section referencing Breaking Bad was absolutely gold 🧡💀
In terms of sequel. There have been constant rumors of Disney planning a trilogy. If i remember correctly even the two main voice actors for Judy and Nick said there was talks of more on the way. But thus far there hasn't been anything official besides the recently announced Disney Plus Zootopia show which if I understand it correctly doesn't focus on Judy and Nick but on side characters.
Given how successful the movie was I'd be surprised if this is was the extend of it and the show wouldn't be followed by another movie. But who knows.
“Watership Down”, “Plague Dogs”, and “Felidae” are all fantastic older, underrated, animated gems! You both should definitely check them out!
Ginnifer Goodwin was in the drama Once Upon a Time that lasted like 7 years on ABC. She was also on the excellent HBO show Big Love.
She was also in the first season of why women kill love this show
I was genuinely surprised by this movie.
I had the same feeling after seeing it in theaters for the first time.
Nice reaction, but you cut the most heart-wrenching scene! T_T There have been tons of movies about animals inhabiting a human world, but the amount of detail they put into this is astonishing. They designed a whole city made for animals with the different levels on the buses, climates for various species, animal prints on the crosswalks and buildings, claw marks on the doorknobs, etc. Check out the concept art if you can.
they cut out basically what they had to cut out, lest the youtube bots come in and slam them with a strike.
I like to think that Zootopia and Sing are in the same universe, with Kung fu panda too.
One of the things I liked about this is that Gazelle who is Shakira says political things very much like she say in real life. Like the thing about living together and that despite the recent hysteria "This is NOT the Zootopia I know". She also walks the walk sine Gazelle is a Prey animal and her back up dancers are TIGERS.
Predators are the MINORITY.
I liked the parallel with race relations when Judy tells the tv audience that Predators are dangerous and then she sees that when a tiger gets on the subway the Prey mom brings her child closer to "protect" him when the tiger was just reading the paper. I've seen people react exactly that way when a Black guy gets on the subway.
The Godfather wasn't a mouse. That is an Arctic Shrew . A good choice for a ruthless crime lord because in real life they have to eat their own weight in food daily and WILL resort to cannibalism if they have to .
Genniffer Goodwin was Snow White in Once Upon a TIme. A tv show on ABC.
The fact that people act like that to minorities in real life is heartbreaking
Loved GEN as Snow White
I can't get over how amazing this movie is. Absolute Disney brilliance.
Love this movie. I could watch it over and over and never get bored. It’s just amazing. 🤗❤️🤗❤️
My daughter loves the Try Everything song from here.
I'm soooo happy you guys watched Zootopia!
Ir you're looking for another animation, please consider "Onward", from Pixar! It's about two brothers; I think you guys would really like to watch it together! Seriously!
True
I totally agree!
The rabbit father always says discouraging stuff because he's a prey animal. They are all about laying low, keeping their heads down and maintaining a low profile.
Tommy Chong's scene had me laughing but my favorite part is the DMV
Here’s some trivia for you, the Weasel is played by Alan Tudyk. In this movie he plays Duke Weaselton, and in frozen he played The Duke of Weselton. Not sure if you recognize the name but the guy is a fun actor. He was the robot Sunny in IRobot, K2SO in Rogue One, Tucker in Tucker & Dale vs evil, Steve the Pirate in Dodgeball, and a cameo of a trucker guy that gets knocked out by Cable in Deadpool 2.
I love how this movie referenced Breaking Bad, that had me rolling on the floor laughing.
40:18 Yeah, I was of the same opinion when I first saw the ads for it, I only ended up watching it last year cause I was super bored, ended up being a great movie with a lot of laughs, and yet still covered serious topics like racism and stereotyping, it was just great all around for me.
Breaking this movie down got me rethinking my child thoughts😩🤭❤️🔥🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
One of my favorite movies and I like your videos
I loved this film. Still waiting for the sequel.
There is a video someone has on RUclips where they recorded their dog actually responding to the wolves during that howl diversion scene lmao it is HILARIOUS!
25:37 “did his animal instincts kick in” no but very close. “Was he drugged” yes
This might sound odd, but Zooptopia is my favourite Disney movie of all time. I just love the animation, the humour, the themes. It's all just fantastic.
It doesn't sound weird. I think this is a lot of people's favourite Disney movie, myself included.
It's my favorite recent one that they've done 😊.
My favorite animated movie
Love the reaction! Zootopia is one of my favorites.
If you want to see a very funny movie with all the cartoon characters you'll know from your childhood, but in a murder mystery, try 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' from 1988. So funny and so clever for it's time.
I was surprised with this one too. After awhile you almost forget that they are animals and you can just enjoy the story.
Love the 2001: a Space Odyssey t-shirt! ("No, not the tapirs!")
Let’s take a moment tho to recognize that Judy is a very corrupt cop. She starts off by blackmailing (not hustling, hustling is tricking someone into buying something) Nick saying that if he doesn’t help her she will turn him in and he will go to jail for tax evasion. She has Nick go into the car lot to search a vehicle without a warrant. Becomes the godmother of the mafia leaders granddaughter. Then uses that connection to get info out of the weasel under the threat of death if he doesn’t talk. She is a really REALLY bad cop.
You all totally missed the let it go joke from frozen when he almost fires her
I was gonna comment this!
If you want a semi-kids movie from 1998 there's Small Soldiers, basically a live action Toy Story with an antiwar theme, and Phil Hartman's last film released posthumously after his death.
On the R-rating scale, Ravenous also from 1998. Just one reaction for this film.
so, they never really explain HOW the predators still survive without eating meat. It's weird...
Only thing that actually bothered me, wish it was explained so that the world would make more sense lol.
I think they briefly previewed that the predators eat mostly fish which are not amorphous or whatever the word in this movie. Plus it's been documented that insects contain a certain amount of protein and are a delicacy in some countries, so there's that on the table.
You should try the anime series Beastars.
Vegan meat lol
I always just assumed they're going towards what we seem to be, especially since this could be seen as being like.. super far into the future and humans are just gone at this point. So something like lab-made meat would be my answer, since they're obviously technologically advanced.
"Mr. Big" and his daughter are shrews, not rodents/mice. The snout is a big giveaway. :)
More animated movies pls😭💕
Or shows👀
Oooooh are ya'll going to be reacting to some animated movies now??? If so, I definitely recommend Encanto & Soul. They have some pretty deep messages.
Also, y'all should react to Don't Look Up (on Netflix) I feel like y'all would LOVE it. It's so good
28:32 Now look up videos of dogs losing it watching this scene.
Secondhand Lions is an awesome movie that I cannot remember any reactor doing so far.
Omg! I just saw this and I am about to watch your reaction to Zootopia! I’m so excited to see another reaction of you both to an animation movie and hope you will continue to!
I love this movie! This one & Sing are my favorite animated movies.
I love Clawhauser because he's a walking contradiction: On the one hand, he's a cliche' donut eating cop. On the other hand, he's a fat cheetah. :)
It's also funny he said Mrs Otterton is really fast bdcause normally he's supposed to be the faster one
Back in the day, the National Zoo in DC had the tapirs right next to the entrance, and the first thing you saw when you walked into the zoo, was a big sign that said, "Consider the Tapir..." And I always loved it.
Honestly I usually watch the Dasha Russian Reacts youtube movie reviews but discovered your movie review today. I almost ran out of air LOL so hard- and seeing BOTH of your expressions especially at the DMV part!!😂😂
The Lion is played by JK Simmons aka Jonah Jameson from Spider-Man
Ernest and Celestine (Ernest et Célestine, 2012, made by France / Belgium/ Luxembourg/ Canada) is another animation movie who touch the subject of discrimination, racism and segregation.
In one side, the Mouses/ Rats Society living in the sewer of the Bears City. They are dominated by the Dentists, the most important jobs for Rodents, since a Rodent without teeth is a dead Rodent... They believe that Bears eat raw youngs rodents.
In the other side, The Bear Society, living just above the Rodent City. They believed that Rodent effrays Moms....
(I will not continue to not spoil anything else)
It is a great movie...
“Anthropomorphic animated animal thing” comment by Curtis was the best unintentional alliteration! 😂
I love this movie love the video guys stay motivated Dream big 1 mill on the way
16:55 LET IT GO! Frozen reference
Dudes... Animated movies...
Rango starring Johnny Depp,
Over the Hedge with Bruce Willis,
and A Bug's Life.
Please and thanks 👊😎
Two Words: Studio Ghibli. Been making epics since the 80s. Start with Princess Mononoke., you absolutely won't regret it.
Over the hedge is SO Underrated, it's a crime!
@@christi776 YES! I'm so surprised that Over the Hedge doesn't get more love. it's one of my favorite animated films ever and with good reason. I have a feeling the boys would love it!
The Disney+ series idea sounds pretty good. Disney did that for Monsters, Inc. by creating Monsters at Work which is pretty damn work.
me and my daughters love this movie and my mom does too. we all love the sloth.
If you liked the slots' scene, you should watch the french animated movie " Asterix's 12 tasks " (I don't know how to translate it) because there's a similar scene
You "committing to the bit" was bloody hilarious!
You guys definitely need to check Sing out. Another animated movie and it is absolutely fantastic!
Yes i love that one. It was part of my boys bedtime ritual.💙
22:53 ASMR in animation. B cause of course there is.
Not only is mr nig a reference to the god father he is also an artic shrew witch are realy deadly creatures for thre size
I highly suggest to watch the cut scenes of this movie cause it used to be almost a totally different movie. Much darker, but Disney asked to tone it down. Nick was the protagonist and predators had to go around with electric shock collars.
Also, it's probable we will have sequels, since apparently there were ideas to make this a trilogy and voice actors confirmed there were talks for them. And with the first movie's success and the series on the secondary characters coming it seems Disney is setting things to launch the sequels.
I don't think they're necessary but they using the crime movies/series structure opens more chances of follow-ups and they have a good worldbuilding and engaging characters. They also could treat some very good topics (One the authors said they would address in case of a sequel is Judy and Nick's possible romantical relationship. Whether it would be possible or they'd stay friends. They also talked about exploring other species outside mammals)
Emmett Otterton was targeted because he'd figured out what was going on, and was on his way to tell Mr. Big.
Evidence: Emmett is a florist, someone who would know both the scientific and steet names for flowers.
The DMV scene had me CRYIN' and DYIN'!
“Vampire in Brooklyn “ next ???
I think Judy's parents "advice" was a comedy shock factor for the audience because we know that you don't say that to your child. Also the 10% predator and 90% prey in zootopia is like America which has different race of people and the biomes you see in the beginning of the moive when Judy is on the train to Zootopia and she sees the tundra biome and the jungle biome are the the countries that have only that race or in this case only have the animals that live in that environment. So only 10% of the predators moved from their biome/born environment to Zootopia
pleaseeee react to Good Burger with Kenan & Kel❤️❤️❤️
Next movie should be The Crow 1994! It’s awesome!
Found you guys last year and I have been binge watching ever since...keep it up
This movie had everything. My favorite animated movie after Lion King.
there is a group of shorts on DISNEY PLUS
Zootopia made more than 1 billion dollars at the box office; and there will be a Zootopia 2 coming out later this year.
It also won the Best Animated Movie Oscar that year.
Please consider THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES (2002). I haven't seen anyone react to this film. Thank you
Brought to you by Disney starring Officer Judy Hopps. A newly graduate of police academy assigned to Zootopia where something sinister is afoot. It is up to Hopps to uncover the culprit
They copied a lot of movies, the mole was from the godfather, the saving the bride was training day, and Walter and Jesse was breaking bad. There was many more as well.
I think Easter eggs like that makes these cartoons that much more enjoyable for the adults😁
Isn’t the fox voiced by Jason Bateman? And I just realized the missing otter was named Emmet Otterton, like Emmet Otter from Jugband Christmas. I’m that old
sloth in the DMV scene at 21:06
You guys should react to Alpha and Omega Animated movie, Rango, Encanto and Ice Age
This is Francine and I am the elephant in the room - wish me a happy birthday! 🎂😂 But seriously, I loved the racial subtext in Zootopia. The way they pitted prey against predators was masterful. Great review, twins! Hey Chris 👋🏾 😘
Happy birthday Francine, hope you're having an amazing day and thank you! :)
@@OctoKrool Thank you so much! 🥰🥰 Actually my birthday is Friday the 13th, which explains everything about me 😜
I missed that Breaking Bad joke until today when I watched this lol.
Nick you are giving me flirtation, I like it I love it I want somemore of it.
According to the lore for zootopia, the predators eat a mix of fish, bird, insect, and plant based protiens.
Ain't no way predators eat plant base, but some predators can like foxes and bears grizzly bears because they are omnivores, but predators like big cats, wolves, and polar are pure carnivores and can't digest plant material.
@desmondedwards6628 well, there is the fish, bird meat for them. I never said it was all plant based.
That would be interesting if the people using the plants to make the drug was Judy’s neighbors
I don’t know if it’s been mentioned already but the lil deep voiced fox is Tiny Lister a.k.a. Deebo from Friday! R.I.P.
There was also a number for Doug on the vice-mayor desk!
I watched this movie over 100 times because my child watched this movie over 100 times... We even had it on last night, but I can honestly say it doesn't get old. I still laugh at some scenes. the Godfather scenes still get me.
Probably my favorite 3d animated movie ever!
Oh my god. That sloth. Yeah, I had that kid as a student for 6 years. I loved him, but sometimes I'd get so frustrated trying to get him moving.
