Agreed! And it only continues as the movies progress. I remember when these movies came out I was so excited to see that her clothes became softer and softer. Like knowing Hiccup taught her she could be tough and confident without pushing everyone away.
She was able to accept herself for who she was, instead of trying so hard to be the baddest b****.

I love the theme of humility in this one. When Hiccup takes credit for Toothless flying “I did it!”, Toothless gives him a wtf? look and he gets tossed. Toothless’ reactions when anyone treats him badly vs. when they apologize. It’s very deep.

14:47 In the books, Hiccup's nickname is Hiccup the Useless, given to him by his cousin Snotlout, who was way more of a bully in the books than in the movies. In a way, Snotlout was the one to name Toothless as a means to make fun of Hiccup with being the only Viking to get the toothless dragon. (Toothless is a small - even smaller than the terrible terrors - green common or a garden dragon that could fit under Hiccups helmet.)
Also, in the book, Vikings co-lived with dragons like other animals, primarily as pets for hunting and fishing, as well as mounts. (If living in Rome - Livestock)
28:18 I think that at this moment, Toothless had grabbed Hiccup's leg in desperation and tore it to save him from the fire.
32:09 Hiccups name is given to all the runts in the Horrendous Haddock family. His full name is Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, which means there were two Hiccups before him. Also, Astrid doesn't exist in the books; instead, there is a little blond curly-haired kleptomaniac named Camicazi, one of my favourite characters.

when this movie came out, it hit a really soft spot for me: I was a real life version of Hiccup during my teens, and my father was pretty much Stoic the Vast. in fact, if my dad had spoken with a Scottish accent, he would have sounded exactly like Gerard Butler, who voiced Stoic (who also played King Leonidis in the movie 300)!

So I think it's kinda funny the first time Hiccup gives him food, Toothless shares and gives him most of it. It's almost like he was saying "here you go, you need this more than me" because unlike the other Vikings he's scrawny in comparison. lol, I wouldn't be surprised if that's what he was thinking because of how sassy Toothless can be. XD

Between the two movies, the tv shows, and the shorts, we get to see such growth between the characters, how their world grows, etc. Plus, Hiccup and Astrid are one of the best written couples out of any franchise ever.

The one thing that confused me between the two films is the alpha and the red death being polar opposites as leaders of their nests.
But as far as the "super Saiyan toothless" I personally chalk it up to a night fury thing as a nod to Godzilla, you know how when og Godzilla was mad his spines down to his tail would light up, that sort of thing.
(Spoiler alert) even in the third film it comes back to play when toothless mimics the vanishing trick, and instead of just glowing down his spine and tail, he emits lightning when powering up, calling back to the first film when night furies are described as the "unholy offspring of lightning and death" just to give you some context.
I won't call it his super Saiyan mode, more like his night fury blood is boiling and he is pissed off to the highest level of pisstivity

Just to be clear. The "Red Death" dragon at the end only exploded because Toothless ignited it internally by shooting a blast into its mouth. Then the impact with the ground ruptured its body, allowing the flames to escape.

And Hiccup shooted inside his mouth, when he saw when Toothless shooted inside the small dragon's mouth when it was about to steal his fish, and the blast made him fall and burn from the inside. Remember??
And Hiccup was like "Oh? gas?"
So he waited for the big one to collect the gas and shoot with Toothless to make the gas burn inside its body.
And as you said, The impact with the ground helped cause an explosion...just as planes explode when they fall.
      Toothless is nothing without Hiccup
And Hiccup is nothing without Toothless
Hiccup got the smartness as a human
And Toothless got the power, as a dragon
And together? Well yeah they made history..

The thing you have to keep in mind about Stoic is, in his world kids _have_ to grow up to be dragon fighters, if they don't then the village starves to death or has to be moved. So long as the dragons were a major problem anyone not trying to learn to fight them was being irresponsible and putting lives at risk.

    • @Anino_Makata

I loved how this animated movie made its spectators talk about the amazing scenes (like you, guys, during the minute 37:28); my favorite part was the flight test. I hope you can react to the sequels. Start with Rider’s of Berk, Defenders of Berk, then Dragons: Race to the Edge (on Netflix) the production value isn’t quite as good as the actual movies but the extra world building is pretty cool and you get introduced to many more dragons.

Funny mistake in that movie: I saw it in the cinema when it came out, in full surround sound (which was a big thing at the time). There's a scene pretty much made to showcase the surround sound aspect of it. Draco flies off the right edge of the screen, then circles all the way around the back of the audience and enters the screen again from the left. All the while you can tell where he is by the direction of the sound of the wing beats. Very cool. HOWEVER... The sound technicians messed up the mix. Draco is talking the whole time he is off screen, but his voice does not follow the wing beats. It only comes from the front speakers the whole time. I'm amazed that nobody involved noticed that before the editing was finalized.

Also, in the original book series, Toothless was actually one of those "little guys" (terrible terrors) on the island. And the dragons were slightly more sentient!
What I love about the author, Cressida Cowell, is that not only did she not mind that they changed Toothless (massively!), but after the film came out, she wrote dragons large enough to ride into her subsequent books. AND she participated in the DVD extras/promotion. The books are aimed at a considerably younger audience than this film series (body fluids, fart jokes...names you'd probably find far worse XD ), and there are very different plot beats, but she wrote the book series as a tribute to her dad; about family members who just absolutely do not understand each other, but love each other nonetheless. Her dad used to fish for terrifying moray eels in the Scottish Isles when she was a kid, while she just wanted to write stories.
And the animation on this thing is just fantastic. Did you notice how every single time Hiccup and Stoick turn away from each other, they are always wearing the same facial expression? God I love this movie. (I have a couple grudges against the following two, but they're still definitely worth a watch and GORGEOUSLY animated. Honestly so are the Netflix "Dragons" series, though they are a tad bit more cartoonish.)

Like you pointed out in your wrap-up comments, I too was really impressed that the people who wrote and made this film went in a direction that I would say very few if ANY other animated projects have ever gone, with Hiccup losing his foot. When I watched this movie, I was so surprised about that turn of events, because like you talked about, it's so rare to see true, permanent consequences after such an epic battle at the end. Hiccup lost something important.
And I just have to believe that there are probably kids out there, ones who have lost a limb or were born without one, who finally had a hero to love and look up to in Hiccup, because he didn't magically get his foot back. He's someone who they can relate to and appreciate seeing, where the majority of kids' films and animated shows just don't provide such a thing. When you think about it, the majority of Disney princesses and the princes and other characters tend to be handsome and perfect, and that doesn't change for them by the end of the film. You don't really get to see very often a short female protagonist, or a romantic leading character who happens to be overweight, or a little meek, or like Hiccup just not interested in some of the things his own father wants him to do. For that, I think I'll always appreciate How to Train Your Dragon, because it went to places where few other animated films would ever go. That's truly admirable.

In case you were wondering Hiccups name is because of his size. Typically the name ‘Hiccup’ is given to the runt of the litter. As is “this was an accident”. They’ve literally been calling him a mistake since birth.

Get ready to see baby Gronckles if you continue with the trilogy! ☺️💚
Agree with the ending, seeing this for the first time years ago I was surprised they had Hiccup lose a foot 😧 but I think it’s important for kids to understand that those kinds of things happen in real life and it’s ok🙂 Great reaction!

A little FYI: the reason why dragons hate eels is simply because it makes them sick. Sometimes it’s even poisonous to them, it’s like toxic ☠️

@@OctoKrool what's you're favorite part of the park and ride? :) For me it's the Harry Potter section... not sure on a ride though, but I *dont* like the 4d rides... the Simpson one made me so sick I had to stay in my hotel all day 😂 The Chocolate Emporium has super yummy desserts! And we always stay at the Hard Rock. Last time I was there was 2018 when my sister got married, now we'll have to wait for this new part to open to go again 😄

Love this trilogy they gave it a great ending in the third one. Craig Ferguson as Gobber is hilarious. I love how playful Toothless gets. It’s neat how one of the animators thought to use his playful cat as a muse for how Toothless acts. Another series you’d like is Hotel Transylvania. You have Adam Sandler as Dracula, Kevin James as Frankenstein, David Spade as the invisible man and Steve Buscemi as Wayne the wolf man.

    Fun facts:
Stoic the Vast declared that his son’s name would be his first sound. He was hoping for Guffaw, Bellow, or similar.
Also in the original book, Toothless was hatched by Hiccup without teeth. Animators changed his species to a new one, but made his teeth retractable so they could keep the name.
Toothless’s designer is the same as Stitch. Imagine long cat stitch with wings and a tail.
In animation, shape theory states that squares are weathered and stubborn, triangles are intimidating, and circles are friendly. When Toothless sees Hiccup drop the knife into the lake, count how many triangles become circular. From his eyes, to his stance, to his wings.
Toothless drew Hiccup. You can see his eyes and big nose, then him holding his hand out.

There is one thing that you can say about this particular franchise and this movie in particular about establishing the stakes very early. Because it's within what the first 3 minutes that we meet Gobber and he's missing limbs. So you know that there is the possibility that you aren't going to get out of this with at least losing a hand or a foot. And yeah they play off gobbers introduction as a joke but you can tell especially when Garber is talking about the dragons eating his hand and whatnot that that would be a very painful experience

This series is surprising for a "kids" movie. In that is pulls very few punches.
Just in this movie, you have a smith missing limbs, presumably from doing his job. Sheep and dragons being eaten... ALIVE. The kill the big baddy at the end and Hiccup loses his lower leg.
