It's very special being able to see this: golden-age Tamiya model engineering being brought to life. PLEASE show us a running video, even if only on carpet indoors!
Full body is now being painted up. It will then come back for decals and then it’s almost finished. I will need to find some electronics for it to bring it to life.
Beautiful kit Gav, thanks so much for building it for us to witness! If you're loving the metal and 'different' design features from the early days of Tamiya RC, get yourself a Fighting Buggy - my first buggy was a Super Champ and I still remember it fondly! Looking forward to seeing a (gentle) run of this epic 👍
I about lost my mind when you built the axles with the stock bushings, then it occurred to me that due to it's value and rarity it's not really a driver. Great content, wish they re released this thing.
Awesome! With our newer scale crawlers, say the RC4WD trail finder 2. The leaf springs tend to break in over time. Before removing springs... Obviously different from vintage Tamiya but I thought I'd throw it out there. Thanks for the content!
the blazer ,sand scorcher and rough rider are replicas of the real cars from the 60's and 70's Mint 400 race .the rough rider is very close to the vw powered sandrail of Malcom smith/Bud Feldkamp ,smith was more known for motorcycles in the mint 400 ,but he built the car so he could do the mint 400 after breaking his leg doing a publicity jump on his bike for a newspaper article,,
The Hi-Lift Hilux springs do fit according to several places. They are very stiff as well, but softer than the Blazer ones. RC4WD also has leaf springs that are softer and direct replacement for the Hi-lift ones. Their red version is far too soft for this heavy all metal chassis, so I would either go for the black ones that are 30% softer than stock Hi-lift, or stock Hilux ones. Notice RC4WD make several length ones so make sure to measure the eye to eye length of the Blazer leafs before ordering. Kind regards Richard
Nice one Gav👍 good to see you going old skool with the electrics and paint scheme, i think with this build needs to be as it should have been👍 I always try and go as period correct as possible with old restorations.. I have a few sets of early acoms and futaba sets here ready for a few restorations along with some early esc/motors but they not getting any cheaper these days🤣 and I can still hear those die hard tamiya collectors crying😭😭😂😂😂
Ide like to see more building. Especially the tough parts,, and about the electronics,, i think it would be cool if u made it after today’s standards, High end even, like a restomod. Do it because you can 😊
The mountaineer or Bruiser leaf springs (black) are much softer and work quite well. If you can get a little articulation going on they’re surprisingly capable crawlers and the 3 speed gearboxes are good fun and work well
Nice one Gavin. Such an icon. See it as a reward for all your time and effort you have put into this channel this far. But to be honest I'm also a bit disappointed because I enjoy seeing someone else do the actual wrenching while building an RC car. You can see the drawings in the manual coming to life. I would have loved to get a fully detailed build video of you actually building this rarity. If you have the footage please just release it. 🙂 For me you don't even have to edit them. 😇
Can see why it was so expensive back in the day. Nice to see one built though from NIB - a rarity in itself. I had heard the suspension was always way too stiff. Shame as it was a cool design.
The flex is not an issue since it will be a shelf queen. Why do you think that Tamiya won’t re release this or the Juggernaut? They are highly collectible !
Not yet. It’s sitting on the studio desk. It needs the grill, decals and canopy fitted and then some electronics. Driver is all finished and while back.
When you run it just watch the corners - it can roll over easily and you really wouldn’t want to do that as the roof is vulnerable. Absolutely fantastic video build - savour it and give us more!
Hmmm, before you consider any rivet removal or polishing, better think about another body colour first. Have you seen 'Dirt' from 1978? - that may give you the right vibes... They should re-re the body and wheels on a cc-02, before I do it. ;)
@@DeutschlanddenDeutschen1987 it will be back on the show for sure but currently budget is extremely low so it’s stopping me from purchasing the vintage electronics for it to make it function. It will be back on to fit the decals and grill.
Had my coffee, my slice of carrot cake, and now Gavin will assemble history. How cool is this?

Once it’s finished and all the electronics are in, sure 👍🏻
All I can say is...WOW👍
Wow, such a rewarding build. Absolutely great to see these old kits being built, I just don't understand the new in box it the cupboard thing.
Really enjoying watching this Gavin! Thank you for enabling us to see one of these put together.
Coming together Nicely Gav 😎
That’s why they call em square bodies my friend. The best looking chevys ever made 😁
Just awesome!!!
Having my M&S indian whilst enjoying this, superb!!
It's a work of mechanical art! Absolutely beautiful. 👍🏻
I totally agree with your box art paint choice. You can see how much you are enjoying this build - almost as much as a TT-01 chassis 😆
This kit is a work of art the chassis is stunning great vid 👍👍👍👍
8:06 Mind blowing job on that face, far out.

Heroic music is definitely deserved on this build Gavin 👍 looks amazing

I did think about it before I built it but I just didn't see the point as it will only ever be driven once in a blue moon at best.
I would Like to see one painted in the electric blue shown on the front of the box .
Much nicer .
Awesome!

What an amazing build this is. Well done gav on these videos.👏👏👌
Great content as usual Gav what a privilege to build such a rare car thanks for sharing the experience
Ide like to see more building. Especially the tough parts,, and about the electronics,, i think it would be cool if u made it after today’s standards, High end even, like a restomod. Do it because you can 😊
It wasn't a difficult build at all and the gearbox was built already so not that much to show.
Heat the springs it’ll soften em up

At some point I will dismantle it for polishing and clear coating so I will just film it and reverse the footage.
Can see why it was so expensive back in the day. Nice to see one built though from NIB - a rarity in itself.
I had heard the suspension was always way too stiff. Shame as it was a cool design.
Gavin when do you think you will paint the body for the blazing blazer?
👍👍👍
LOVE THIS KIT CAN YOU GIVE ME YOUR PAINTERS INFO I WOULD LIKE TO GET A FEW DRIVERS PAINTED THANK YOU
A scary build in a way. Would not want to drop lose a single screw.
Some parts would not be easy to replace that’s for sure.
Great stuff. Better stock up on some Tamiya bravery pills for when it comes time to paint that body 😂😬
Have you seen Sterling kits version of this? See it on RC tanks& trucks 24/7, or on Dennis Dempsey's radio out of control
Build the kit with the parts as provided. Paint box art ,only then will you have pain homage to this great piece of r/c history.
Great vid,
Do you know where I can get one NIB?
Thanks
I’ve seen a few come up on eBay
The flex is not an issue since it will be a shelf queen. Why do you think that Tamiya won’t re release this or the Juggernaut? They are highly collectible !
OH please! what do you use to soften the tyres? Great Show i love it ! THANKs al lot ! =) )
Silicone oil spray. WD40 will also work but it's not as good for the rubber as silicone oil.
Great video Gavin. Was the stand in the kit?
No, this was a gift from an RCKicks viewer
Is there a video with it complete?
Not yet. It’s sitting on the studio desk. It needs the grill, decals and canopy fitted and then some electronics. Driver is all finished and while back.
It's too bad that we can't get one of these from TAMIYA again. I would love to build a nib one. I'd pay a $1000.00 for it.
Looking awesome..will you be doing a light beach run when finished .
A grass run for sure but I am as far away from a beach as you can be in the UK LOL
When you run it just watch the corners - it can roll over easily and you really wouldn’t want to do that as the roof is vulnerable.
Absolutely fantastic video build - savour it and give us more!
Can you please tell me where I can get the stand and are there other ones available
eBay have the stand
Stupendous! I'm sure this is a dream car for many RC collectors, including myself. Did you manage to find an original 4000mah NiCd battery pack?
No nothing yet
@@RCKickschannel It'd be nice to find one, even if it is one that doesn't work, just for display purposes.
This is not a build video - this is a series of shots of the car in various states of being built. A missed opportunity for such a rare car.
I agree. Too bad.
More detail would have been great, like the gearbox is quite big and would have been nice to see the insides. :)
@@alexhofstee466 I agree
@@alexhofstee466 I could not agree more, very sad.
Gearbox was built by Tamiya and comes like that in the kit.
LIKE 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
How much was this kit back in the day? When I bought my rough rider in 1980 it was $150. And I restored it last year.
Gavin...what was your method to make those tires look so nice?
Silicon oil
Hmmm, before you consider any rivet removal or polishing, better think about another body colour first.
Have you seen 'Dirt' from 1978? - that may give you the right vibes...
They should re-re the body and wheels on a cc-02, before I do it. ;)
...1979 it was. 😮
You’ve done a great job on those tyres Gav! How did you restore them?
Silicon oil
@@RCKickschannel Cheers 👍🏼
The end bell on the motor looks a bit "off".
Hello from southeast alaska. It's william joseph I changed my name on the channel
LOL Hi William
@@RCKickschannel love that build. Just finished up your video
part3?
So no actual building then 😕 😒 😪
Just talking for 5 minutes and a montage 😪
Update?
Body is painted and the driver is at the pro painters
Update?
Nothing new
@@RCKickschannel 🙄 sad
I wanted to See it fully functional
