Retired 19 years ago. I always liked the "Comfort Cabs" over the noisy SD38's. Also slept in a lot of hot cabooses before we got rooms. Back in the old days.
Those were some close calls. Hose always almost make you dirty r britches. lol. I had a few of those over the years when I was running. I enjoyed the video Mike. Thanks 👍👍👍❤️
Those kids at the beginning cut it so close. Loved seeing the old analog display panel. Great video and a great view from inside the cab at some of what engineers have to deal with.
Happy Holidays Mike. As others have already mentioned, I appreciate you taking the time to record and post your cab videos. Rail enthusiasts need to see a professional locomotive engineer at work and the skills involved in day to day railroad operations. You have a great personality and the perfect person to make these videos available.
I always hated going through all those little towns with 25 crossings that went nowhere. And with an impatient female driver that couldn’t wait on the train. Lol!
EARTH ANGEL THIS definitely was. 👍 GREAT surprise ride !!!! THANKS for taking me along!😇😍😳🎊💕 YOU’VE Got a fan club out there!!👯♂️I finally rang “the” BELL,🛎 now it won’t be such a surprise!🎈.GREAT engineer, great 🎵 music, and 👍 great ride!!!🚂🎟.Thank You!👍💕😍😀
My dad started Penn Central in 73 rail gang,, went to Conrail, then to CSX, became a conductor then Engineer, retired in 2007, passed away in 2009 from cancer. I watch these to see what he did. He use to hate missing my birthday, or baseball games or football games, I remember a few times he'd come home in the middle of the night and watch me sleep but didn't wake me up and I would act like I was asleep. Now I would give anything to sit up and tell him I loved him. He wrote me a letter when he passed saying he would hate when the phone would ring, knowing it was a crew caller calling because he knew he wouldn't see me. I knew he busted his ass so I would get to live a great childhood. Also cool fact, his grand father, my great grand father was a Gandy Dancer.
I just spent more than 60 minutes watching your videos and wanted to say thanks. I realize buying one of your videos might say thanks in a better way but for now, thanks! Your videos focus on the trains, the railroads and lots of information but unlike some videos your videos aren't just about you with train footage in the rear. Peace!
Thanks again for another awesome assistant engineer ride along video. Have a question Mr. Barnett. Where could I find a CSX reflective safety vest to add to my railroad room I'm creating in our new home?
That last clip looked like Kennesaw. "I know you're in a train but can't you see we're having a block party here? Jeez!" I had something similar happen to me like that in Orlando FL. Cops parked their cars across the tracks because they were closing the railroad off to train use for the parade. Luckily they were able to clear off the crossing just as we came through because it was about to get messy.
My uncle was a engineer for a old short line that got bought out I live near a csx line and railfan all the time!! When I become a engineer I don’t care if railfan or not all you’ll hear from me besides crossing and starting to move is “shave and a haircut Two Bits!!”
1:35. Going through downtown acworth. I bet you get a lot there an by the Marietta square. I feel like I remember in like 2010 or somewhere around than a homeless woman got hit just north of Marietta square between hwy41 and the square.
I really enjoy your videos man makes me jealous man I’m thinking of getting into doing that for a career actually so your vids make me smile man, what a cool career to retire from man you still young!
In case you’re wondering on 33 years with the nyc subways killed one passenger ( she jumped) many near miss last one 2017 passenger pass out for on the heat saw he fall on the platform lucky I was following another train operating as slower speed stop my train in time a few seconds later he fell off the platform onto the tracks he was not killed or badly injured another passenger jump down the tracks to recuse the fallen passenger he’s ok
Now the A10 Warthog have been scrapped how about fitting the Gatling guns to the front locomotives and firing bursts of blanks at trespasses? If that does not work add live rounds. Salt or buckshot. and if that does not work then depleted uranium.
bullshit. you ain't never worked no 70 hrs/week either, overtime or working 2 jobs like i did for 15 yrs straight. you'll be using that sick day then, buddy.
I’m an operator with Chicago transit authority and I will never understand the fascination with people always wanting to be on the tracks. People please stay off the tracks!
I'm an Engineer for a 1st Class Commuter Railroad on the East Coast, and while we do have freight, 95% of the time I operate passenger trains. My week goes a little something like this. Bare in mind this is just an example of a generic week: SATURDAY: On call starting 12:01AM. Crew calls at 5:00AM for an 8:00AM report to a Yard. I'll catch the 6:30AM train, arrive to the yard at 7:30AM. I call the Yardmaster to find where my train is. Get on the train, meet the Conductor and Brakeman (Who I've probably never seen before), do a job briefing, brake test, speed control certification, check for orders and messages from the tower, then off we go by 8:15AM to pick up the people. Arrive at our final destination at 9:30AM. We'll switch ends, leave by 9:50AM and go back to where we started by 11:10AM. Do two more roundtrips somewhere and I'm finished at the Yard I started in at 05:20PM. I catch the 05:50PM train home, and I'm back home by 07:00PM. SUNDAY: Since I finished at 05:20PM Saturday, I get 8 hours rest and crew calls me for more punishment at 01:20AM this time. I report at 03:20AM and repeat all the above. Finished by 10:15AM, home at around Noon. I finished pretty early today, so Crew will call me again at 06:15PM for a 09:15PM report at a terminal that's an hour and twenty minute drive from my house. I show up, do 6 really short breezy trains with a 3 hour swing in the middle. This time I'm done at 07:40AM on.. MONDAY: Get home at 9:10AM but I'm back on call at 03:40PM. This time crew calls at 7PM for a 10PM report to freight train in a siding a 2 hour drive from home. It only has to go to a work site for a track work program in the morning. We move the train 80 miles, tie the brakes, and a crewmember drives us back to the siding where we started. Our off time is 10AM on.. TUESDAY I've been home since 4AM but my off time is 10AM because the crewbook has the freight job as a 12 hour duty. Crew calls at 6PM for a 9PM report at a terminal for a Rock Concert relief/Extra job. It's quick and easy and I'm done by 12:15AM on... WEDNESDAY I'm home by 01:45AM. Crew gives us the mandatory 8 hours from our crewbook off time and they call us at 09 AM this time for a 12 AM ready reserve, called a protect, at a rail terminal. I show up, sit there until 5 PM when suddenly a rail is broken somewhere and the entire railroad is backed up with cancellations and delays. The stationmaster has my crew operate a Passenger Extra train on a one way to the suburbs. I tie up the train by 7:45PM, and I'm home by 9PM. And that's that. Thursday / Friday are my days off and I'll be on call again on Saturday starting at 12:01AM. In total for this hypothetical week we operated 21 Passenger and 1 Freight trains, we did absolutely NOTHING on our off time but sleep and work for our 5 work days, all our friends think we don't like them anymore because we've been ignoring their calls, but in return for this sacrifice, our paycheck for this week will be $1,603.74 after taxes and deductions. To get to where I am, I had to go through a 14 month training program that was absolutely punishing, one I wouldn't do again, but am glad that I did it. It's a great job but you sacrifice time for money. Thanks for reading if you did, and if you still want to do a job like this, just apply online! Best of luck!
