This is such an incredible demonstration of why it's never too late to plant - and while Storm Babet is hitting some parts of Scotland so hard, I hope more of us can learn from you.

It always amazes me! Babet has caused some damage here, unfortunately. We're pretty vulnerable to wind from the east still.

I hope you make it through winter without too much damage. I have just seen a headline saying to be prepared for a 'period of turbulent weather' in the UK. I think you're right about these 'anomalies' being our new reality 🫤

Beautiful homestead you are creating. Best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪 to you and your family and subscribers

I dare assume that the compound effect of several belts side by side would be even more pronounced. Thanks for pointing out this obvious truth.

Salute you. The more trees the better. Also you have changed a 2D landscape into a 3D landscape, massively increasing opportunities for wildlife. More power to you.

Good demonstration :) Would have liked you to demonstrate further by walking towards the willows (to show how long the current shelter belt shelters), but I guess we'll settle with the rule of thumb of up to 10x the height :)

On an exposed small site on the west coast of Mull, lots of gales and generally windy all winter long, I have some (mostly hawthorn) hedging underway and a wee orchard of amazingly tough apple trees, but the garden needs much more shelter. Could I ask what species of willow you use, and do you stake them? Thanks, really enjoying your videos.

I use a few named cultivars of willow, mostly bowles hybrid, but for the shelter belts I mostly just stick to local cultivars. People often offer us willow when it's being cut. I don't stake them, but I do push a lot underground, often over two feet deep.

What type of trees are you planting for your shelter belt?

We certainly see the difference at ours, we never used to be able to use our bottom garden but nowadays we can sit out there becuase of the hedge. :)

I remember visiting Martin Crawford's main garden for the first time almost a decade ago in a group of forest garden students and him just double underlining the importance of shelterbelt to the tune of 'It won't matter how clever your designs are; without windbreak, they'll just get demolished'.
With a weather system fundamentally out of whack, the UK needs all the buffer zone we can get...
