After watching probably 100 different videos that were not helpful at all, I can't believe how easy you made it look. Thank you so much for creating this simple-to-follow, exactly-what-I-needed video! :D
Great video, thank you! I just wanted to add, to those asking about finding the wire harness (for the 05 Grand Am and others)........spend the extra 70 bucks and purchase the Scosche Replacement Interface, part number GM2000FA. What isn't very widely described is that the interface CONTAINS the wire harness needed to hook cleanly into the factory receiver unplugged from the factory stereo. I lost a day looking for the harness, bought the interface and lo and behold, damn thing was in there too. The added bonus of buying the interface is you retain all the warnings chimes. Don't even try and cheap out, just buy the thing. I also purchased the Scosche installation kit GMT2049AF. Each wire from the JVC stereo harness matched up perfectly to the Scosche receiver, color for color. And lastly, I made a mistake and didn't buy the Antennae adapter. Yep, the factory aerial is smaller, went back and bought universal adapter UAA1F. I called around looking for a wire harness, one stereo shop tried to sell me the interface and harness for $150.....nothing wrong with profit but Walmart had them for half that.
After seeing hundreds of "how-to" videos on RUclips with off camera action, terrible lighting, unnecessary footage, and lousy music, I was impressed with the production value of this video. I wasn't really looking for this video, I just happened to stumble across it. Good work.
Best video I have seen so far....Ignore the neg comments. The radio I am removing has those nobs. It is an after market and I am gonna have to do the connects in the car and I will not be using heat tools. I do admit ..I think the old radio doesn't work because of these connections losing some contact over the last ten years.
Thank you so much, but you have an older version of cables. I had a slightly newer version and a new chime box where I can turn a switch and make the sound more quiet. Thanks anyway, you gave me the confidence to pursue this and it turned out exactly has planned. The directions were kind of confusing, but after you just match up the colors everything worked out fine. Thanks! :)
I installed a radio to my gf's car, when i brought the cables together, i did them with black tape, the one that is very hard to come out. My only concern is that ive seen some people using a lighter to heat up the tape after both cables are together, but i didnt do that at all. but i did made sure to tape them right, and put extra tape on them too.
Good video overall, however; It is worth noting that in at least the 05 Grand Am, simply matching the colored wires does not quite do the job. Apparently the red switched power wire must be connected to some other source other than the corresponding red wire in the dash radio harness. I read somewhere that possibly a dark green wire in the ignition switch works. Have yet to locate and try it. Everything else as shown in this video works as described.
WARNING: You should NEVER use twist locks to join wires in a car. Road vibrations cause them to come loose and the elements will cause them to corrode prematurely. Even though this is a just a stereo and not some vital piece of equipment, a loose wire can potentially cause a short circuit. The radio shares a circuit with other vital components such as SRS airbag system, Body Control Module, and the instrument cluster. Butt connectors often come loose as well, and allow air and moisture to corrode the conductors. Although this method is unlikely to cause serious damage, it may lead to a lot frustration later, and a blown fuse may leave you stranded. A true professional always solders joints or finds a safer, reliable alternative (NOT scotch locks or wire taps).
Thanks for posting, you have a very nice video. I recommend using a aftermarket wire harnesses like metra a and b clips. They are pretty cheap on eBay and save Loy's of time and or guess work.
@ Ricardo you might need an accessory wire I had to get an accessory wire for my 2010 Chevy cobalt cause the car didn't have the red power wire but if that's the case take your care to a stereo place and let them install everything I learned how to do my stuff my watching my cuzzin install my system in my moms truck
This is silly but I was stuck on my install. I didn't realize that you bent the tabs on the housing. One minute in I was educated. Smooth sailing - just wanted to say thanks.
the orange wires arent for sub out they are for the dimming of the stereo lights, some aftermarket stereos use them, most dont. just make sure theyre covered up good otherwise your dash lights fuse will pop and you wont see your speedo and stuff.
So when i removed my old stereo there was 3 things the antenna, the colored wires, and the ground wire with a clip on the end. What do i do with that ground wire?
Well Done. This was a very nice video. Informative, to the point, nothing annoying. I comment on youtube about once year, that I have taken time to comment on your video at all is a very high complement from me.
You are gonna need a multi-meter and a battery. Use the volt meter to figure out which wire goes to the battery (often yellow), which wire comes from ignition (often red), and the ground wire (probably black). Then use the battery to figure out the speaker wire. Usually the two wires going to each speaker and similar colors, like green and green with a white line on it. find the pairs and touch them to the battery. You'll hear the speaker make a crackling noise and know that pair to that speaker
I didn't think people did that anymore. I actually had a stock radio from a Toyota Corolla stolen in a shopping mall parking lot at night back in 2000. WTF $$$ did they expect for that? And they broke in through they door key lock somehow jimmied it out, and I found it in back my seat. (was kind of them to leave it for me). Since they left that, I never held much of a grudge, strange as that sounds. That woulda been WAY worse if they kept the car key lock, or tossed it, than a missing stereo.
the "remote" wire goes to a subwoofer amplifier and turns it on only when the car is on so it doesnt drain your battery. unless you have an amplifier, dont worry about the remote wire
good video. do you know if steering wheel controls still work if i install a new radio in my grand am? and does the chime work if i take out the old radio? BTW were did you get that black harness thing the radio goes in ( 00:27 ) ?
Tape up those unused wires... also use electrical tape for each connection just incase one comes loose... the ors get is illumination btw. So goes to your sidelight. Etc. Blue is electrical aerial.
I need help , where can I buy that harness where you plug the harness from the car to your own custom harness? Then having that other end to plug into your new stereo ?
Hello Michaganshooter, I was wondering about the Chime that you added. I'm confused on how you're suppose to splice that into the wiring harnesses. What color wire do you splice to the chime? And would this also work for my 2002 Grand Am. Thanks.
BTW, great tutorial. I just have one question. Is it a best practice to still add an additional ground wire even though both your wire harness and radio harness include one? Or were you just including that step as if the harness didn't include a ground wire.
having a connector made for your vehicle is convenient BUT sometimes there can be a wire or two off and it should take you minutes to wire a color coded harness. if you cant then you shouldnt be doing it in the first place
So I see u have the chime box I when to my local car stereo shop ask for the box they say u don't really need it is true I don't Wana have a bunch of problems en my car is a 2000 impala can u tell me wat things I'm not go to have if I use the chine box please thank u
You don't need it but it's nice to have. Good to know when you left a door open or your lights on. If you're not in a hurry you can find one on ebay for way cheaper than what you'd in a store.
I've got an extra blue wire with a yellow stripe on the harness but there isn't one for the Pioneer side. Al the other colors match up (except orange). Should there be one or does that wire serve a different purpose?
What kind of harness are you using? I mean the one that is connected to the car's cable. It is that I have already bought 2 that according to were compatible but they did not work. Buy the AVH-210 EX and I've tried a lot and it does not connect
At the 8:35 mark. Is that some type of antenna input connector? I noticed the one that was connected to my original radio, doesn't connect with the pioneer I bought. Where would be the best place to buy them?
alright, i got this grand am... the guy i got it from tore the omd radio out and screwed the security system up. there is no dome light either. i have a stock radio for this model and a sony, and even w proper wiring cannot get either working. i have never had this mind of trouble w a radio. any suggestions?

this is probably the best demonstration on youtube on how to do an install!! NICE WORK!!!!
After seeing hundreds of "how-to" videos on RUclips with off camera action, terrible lighting, unnecessary footage, and lousy music, I was impressed with the production value of this video. I wasn't really looking for this video, I just happened to stumble across it. Good work.
Just gotta day this guitar is amazing! Wow I love how relaxing feel it gave me while working on my radio
Your choice of music was awesome! Great video. Thank you.

blue is "amp turn on" and blue with white is "power antenna" used for raising those fun antennas

Cool editing and cool choice of music. Informational and entertaining.
i have liked this video it has even equiped me with new techniques as a junior electrician.....

Also, very well done how-to video, great visuals, professional production quality.
Chris Joseph just to let you know a lot of professional uses butt connectors and wire nuts
Twist locks is for home wiring.
You make it look very simple thank you.
GREAT video!!! easy to understand and shows great detail. THANKS!!!

Finally, someone using a good song to test a radio on...
"And nothing else matters"
I like your taste in music
From my experience, it all depends on the car. Some radios (don't quote me on this) have them built in.
Great installation video
Good edit, nice to watch.
the orange wires arent for sub out they are for the dimming of the stereo lights, some aftermarket stereos use them, most dont. just make sure theyre covered up good otherwise your dash lights fuse will pop and you wont see your speedo and stuff.
good job editing the video. not what I was looking for but damn this is one a nice video. LIKE!
Nice profile pick! Great videos as well! You have yourself a subscriber!
This video was a big help 😀

Thumbs up for Metallica on the radio!

HELP! My sub's in my 88 Chevy won't come on I matched and connected all colors on wire hardness
Absolutely awesome! Thank you so much you saved me at least $70
So when i removed my old stereo there was 3 things the antenna, the colored wires, and the ground wire with a clip on the end. What do i do with that ground wire?
i matched up all the colors and did exactly this... no sound on my front right speaker...
Well Done. This was a very nice video. Informative, to the point, nothing annoying. I comment on youtube about once year, that I have taken time to comment on your video at all is a very high complement from me.
thank you so much for this video after lots of stress i finally got my new radio and subwoofers to work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The music makes me wanna play the sims

just a note if you got the Scosche GMT2049 dash kit, then the whole part of putting the radio in the plastic case part is different (0:30, and 7:50).
Brilliant tutorial, nice music choice aswell ;)
very nice video and presentation. thank you very much.
You did need to use a PAC radio pro when installing the radio into that grand am
Thank you for posting this. Somebody stole my car radio and now I just sit I'm silence.
I didn't think people did that anymore. I actually had a stock radio from a Toyota Corolla stolen in a shopping mall parking lot at night back in 2000. WTF $$$ did they expect for that? Metallica at the end? Perfect.
Thanks man this video helped me out a lot
this is very educational, thanks man
the "remote" wire goes to a subwoofer amplifier and turns it on only when the car is on so it doesnt drain your battery. unless you have an amplifier, dont worry about the remote wire
This is a clean video. I am new in this, do I need to buy a new chime or there is one already on the car?
Thanks
During the old school days...all you needed was a: Lighter, 9 volt battery, Light bulb. No diagrams or harnesses were needed w/ that method.
Wow this video is great !!
good video. do you know if steering wheel controls still work if i install a new radio in my grand am? and does the chime work if i take out the old radio? BTW were did you get that black harness thing the radio goes in ( 00:27 ) ?
Tape up those unused wires... also use electrical tape for each connection just incase one comes loose... the ors get is illumination btw. So goes to your sidelight. Etc. Blue is electrical aerial.
The orange and orange/white striped wires are not sub out? It is illumination and dimmer function to dim the HU when you turn your headlights on
If only this had come on two years ago.
I wouldn't have redone the whole inside dash see
can you make a video on replacing the radio to a ford taurus? apparently it's a lot different from changing others.
NOTHING ELSE MATTERS!!
thank you very much for man you need to get more views for real
I already have an aftermarket radio in my car, so I was wondering if I needed to do all the things with the wires. Someone please respond ASAP
The music mad
I need help , where can I buy that harness where you plug the harness from the car to your own custom harness? Then having that other end to plug into your new stereo ?
great video, thanks
my thing from @35 seconds doesn't fit(too big) and I have the correct one for my car, any suggestions??
Thanks for the video helps me out a lot
Thanks for the vid. Great editing
sei un genio!!!! gran bel tutorial
Always solder the wires and use heatshrink tubing
I'm surprised you couldn't use the same ground for original radio and you had to drill a hole.. could you explain that?
thanks for explaining
Big help, thanks
Hello Michaganshooter, I was wondering about the Chime that you added. I'm confused on how you're suppose to splice that into the wiring harnesses. What color wire do you splice to the chime? And would this also work for my 2002 Grand Am. Thanks.
Really great and detailed, thank you
Thanks for this video, it helped
I seen on another video I had to connect it to an accessory wire so it turned the radio off, is that true?
...I like the rusted screwdrive!! 😅😅
Omg, I look this up just because I am curious and need a little help. and literally this is my exact car and the exact system I just bought
How do you know the measurements for the right installation/mounting kit and the aftermarket radio?
How do find the key wire ? And the ground wire on my head unit says WARNING negative ground 14.4 volts .......cars are 12volts ??
BTW, great tutorial. I just have one question. Is it a best practice to still add an additional ground wire even though both your wire harness and radio harness include one? Or were you just including that step as if the harness didn't include a ground wire.
The instructions called for the ground wire splicing. Might have something to do with that particular radio interfacing with that particular vehicle.
That is one rusty screwdriver
Kenwood
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😭
having a connector made for your vehicle is convenient BUT sometimes there can be a wire or two off and it should take you minutes to wire a color coded harness. if you cant then you shouldnt be doing it in the first place
if there was a black ground wire in both harnesses why did you splice it and attach it to the car isnt it good enogh to connect the two ?
to have the chime with an aftermarket radio you must get a chime for them to work they will no longer chime from your doors
You did need to use a PAC radio pro when installing the radio into that grand am ?
Nice one bro
I've got an extra blue wire with a yellow stripe on the harness but there isn't one for the Pioneer side. Al the other colors match up (except orange). Should there be one or does that wire serve a different purpose?
and what a Cd and song have lol nothing is matter lol you rock
What kind of harness are you using? I mean the one that is connected to the car's cable. It is that I have already bought 2 that according to were compatible but they did not work. Buy the AVH-210 EX and I've tried a lot and it does not connect
At the 8:35 mark. Is that some type of antenna input connector? I noticed the one that was connected to my original radio, doesn't connect with the pioneer I bought. Where would be the best place to buy them?
Can you get the harness WITHOUT the chime box. I havent had chimes since i got the car, and dont really need them
what was the wire used to connect the original black wire from the car to the new radio? that's the only piece I'm missing.
Thanks, Good work.
would you know if Pioneer MVH-160Ui comes with a cage aswell ? like the one on your video comes with a cage .
alright, i got this grand am... the guy i got it from tore the omd radio out and screwed the security system up. there is no dome light either. i have a stock radio for this model and a sony, and even w proper wiring cannot get either working. i have never had this mind of trouble w a radio. any suggestions?
I have an extra red wire that says its for ignition but I don't have anywhere to put it and my stereo won't turn on without it?
