This is because the whiskers are typically only as wide as the body, and since the cat cant guess how big its behind is (in that cats case, wider than the whiskers), it just has to hope its whiskers are telling it the truth

I'm glad our cats live so far away from people you'd never be able to pet them, as people sometimes straight up steal cats and dogs, especially ones that are not tagged!
My mom had a tabby and he was one of the most special kitties ever 😢. Unfortunately, he had to be put down in April. Him and I got really close in the last few years of his life. He literally cuddled me to sleep. He was awesome 👌 👏 RIP DEXTER 🙏 🪦
My tabby is so clingy, i havent gone to the bathroom alond in years since i got her 😂 i thought i was actually alone in the shower the other day, but nope. She poked her head in to lick the faucet water drops
My mom just lost her tabby. Her name was Titi, aka Durse Min. I knew her for a whole 18 years and she lived a long and happy kitty life. She hated being picked up, but she was the most affectionate cat, purring non-stop for an hour with us while watching movies or when going to bed. She was also the most talkative cat; I would meow at her and she'd meow right back and we'd have conversations! She had quite the routine with my mum and would wait for her everyday for their evening yoga session. My mum was even able to understand her meows and knew which one meant hungry, or she wanted a stint in our unfinished old basement for cat adventures. Sadly, in her last days she became deaf and very scrawny, so we knew she wasn't long for this world. She even let me hold her in my arms without complaining. She may be gone now, but we'll remember her and she'll live on in our hearts. The old house is still hers in spirit! 😸
Update : some neighbours moved in next door to hers and their cat decided to move in with my mom. The crazy thing is, it's a tabby just like Titi, it looks almost exactly how she looked, except with a raspy meow. My mum went to talk with the neighbours and I tried bringing their cat, but it is terrified of their dog, hence why it goes to my mum's. They don't mind her taking the cat, so she has a tabby again. Funny how life works sometimes!
That "Letter M" is actually the most common coat marking among Tabbies. It is there as part and parcel of their "False Eyes" that never close. Tabbies have this for the same reason Tigers have shoulder spots, and Leon sleeps with one eye open.
In my country they are lovingly called "purebred mutts". It could also be interpreted as "purebred bastards" which i think chacks out (mutt doesnt have a negative conotation in my language). For mixed dogs we say "professional village vagabond/tramp"
I have a tabby called Molly who ironically enough doesn't have the M, but instead has a bright orange spot (the only orange in her coat) on her forehead.
Garfield there is really a beautiful shade of Red. Got my Big Black slimmed down with wet food 3 times a day so he would eat less kibble; his people should try that.
See... Queenie was just laying beside me when this came up and so I started petting her and she wrapped around my hand for lovies and than... well than ATTACK!! 😂😂❤❤
I have one. She's 10 years old and still very playful. I can't always be home to play with her, so I tied a shoelace to a fan and turn it on so the string flops around and she goes after it.
I love cats but tabbies r my utmost favourite specially those who have tiger strips. Few months ago v lost our tabby cat who used to come to our home & v used to feed her. She also used to rest & sleep in our home but always wanted to stay out at night. Unfortunately she got killed by street dogs. Still miss her so much! 😢 May God protect these lovable creatures.
My Tippy Girl, The cat in my picture, was the best kitty I could have ever asked for. She passed away in 2020. I miss her so much every day. Every time I see another Tabby I think of her.
We've always had tabby cats in our family, for my entire life, before I was born Each one of them was special in their own way, with their own distinct personality. It still hurts when I think back to ones we've lost. Double so, considering we've lost both of our boys this year. Ages 13 and 12. We did get another orange tabby (a girl! Very rare indeed), and we've had another tabby boy since last year that came to us as stray and we took him in. He's probably the cuddliest of all cats we've ever had, and the most "dog like" as in he follows us, when we call his name he comes over, he likes to fetch and he loves to sit on your arm when you walk around
Alot of people like to call breeds such as the Egyptian Mau a tabby, but they are still an Egyptian Mau. I have two Egyptian Mau's that I've adopted. Both have what appears to be a grey, striped and spotted coat with a wide black dorsal stripe and a black striped tail. Both of my Egyptian Maus have a scrab beetle pattern on their heads, including their greyish, black striped and spotted coat turning bronze when struck by the sun. Both possess a pie shaped face and elongated ears with long limbs and lanky bodies, My Maus are great climbers and very chatty cats.
Tabby is just the name for the coat pattern. It's the "original" cat pattern; the wild relatives of house cats, the African wild cats, have a tabby pattern to camouflage them.
You're very lucky, as scarce as they are. From the way you describe them they can look either Bronze or Silver depending on the lighting. They also come in a Smoke, where the background color is a medium/dark gray.
My much-missed Somali Max had that darker stripe down his back that continued onto his tail, made up of relatively long guard hairs that had more bands of his darker-colored ticking. In Somalis and Abys it's called an eel stripe. My Turkish Angora was a black smoke with an underlying Classic Tabby pattern; she looked like black and silver marble. Instead of having rings on her tail she had a black stripe that started at the base of her tail then progressed to at least 3 shades of gray around to the underside, where her plume was silver. Gorgeous creatures; miss them every day.
I have two males Tabby. Both are brownish-gray with black stripes. Both have the underside of their paws and feet black. Both are climbers. Both love to cuddles and be real rascals!
There's a brown/black stray(?) tabby that I sometimes see in the fall when I'm out hunting. It's ridiculous how well it blends into high grass, really easy to lose track of when it stops moving. Usually see it catching mice there.
if you look closely in direct sunlight, you can see that tiger stripe pattern in even all black cats. because the striped pattern fur is slightly darker than the non striped fur, even in all black cats. next time you are near a black cat, see for yourself
The last part describes my cat perfectly, always wanting to lay on or next to you and always wanting to play fight. Tho sometimes they go a bit too far with play biting.
Their whiskers also compensate for their poor close up eyesight. Just as they get too close to see what they are hunting and pounce their whiskers fold forward and act as sensors to zero in for the kill.
I had one the vet called a "dirty tabby" because of her marbling pattern. So I named her Marble because of that. Absolutely best cat I ever had. Miss her a ton.
