Thanks this is the most thorough update guide you will find. A lot of it is not necessary. But things like icon update and baseband update don't come up very often. But things have to be done in the correct order. And you have to initialise the firmware. This is the most thorough guide you will find. Thanks for the comment

Thanks. I am afraid there are a lot of videos out there with the wrong update procedure. This video contains the precise steps to do the updates. And every step is there for a reason. Updating the baseband I have only ever needed to do that once in this revision of the firmware. And you will not see this on any other videos. Thanks

In addition to turning GPS and APRS off, I like to connect a dummy load and reducing RF power to Low so that no significant RF gets on the chip pins under any circumstances.

Hi Chris, great stuff. I would mention that I've read it's best to never transmit with the USB programming cable connected. I've done it by accident with no ill effects, but I've read it can cause damage

I haven't got channel set in my radio and I can't go to V/M mode , I can change to V/M in settings and consign it to p1 and save it to the radio but nothing happens it to thinking of sending it back

    • @digitalanaloguehamradio

I think the problem is your radio is in business mode, like for a taxi company or security. run the computer software read from the radio and look at the settings. I can’t remember offhand, where it is, but you are looking for business mode , amateur. It’s an optional settings. A business user will use channels.. ham will use Vfo.

TY Chris for the video! I was able to update to FW1.14 from 1.13.
But there are a few bugs:
-In FW1.13, basic encryption was available. No longer in 1.14. So whatever you had on 1.13 continues to 1.14 but without the ability to edit the basic encryption anymore. But it is still there behind the curtains.
    - The NO AUDIO still persists (hardware v1.00) once you change channels and you have dual watch/dual display turned on. This happens when you turn the knob "counterclockwise." If you change channels in a "clockwise" direction, the NO AUDIO may or may not happen. To fix this, you have to RESTART the HT or resort to SINGLE display only (time settings can be enabled; some users turn this off to save on hardware memory I suppose). Could this be a memory limitation already?
-Enhanced mode can be fully edited on FW1.14 but it doesn't match other radios (tested with Retevis RT84) enhanced privacy modulation even on the SAME 32-key encryption code. I do hope that both basic and enhanced be brought back on FW1.15 if they would still be releasing an update. No need to have 255 enhanced keys that won't match other DMRs. The usual 16 basic + 8 enhanced encryption is enough as long as both work. Also, is there a way to be able to have dual display with the basic and enhanced feature enabled? On FW1.13, the enhanced encryption is a no go if you are using another brand DMR. Only the basic encryption works. And on FW1.13, dual display works. In other words, if the dual display is required to be OFF for the HT to avoid the NO AUDIO problem, then having 2x 868 hardware inside limits the HT to perform as 2x individual radios and loses the dual watch functionality. Could it be that the limitation of the HT is already at its edge with the features they added on FW1.14 since they also forced the radio to work only on single display mode to avoid freezing? The NO AUDIO when doing a channel change (clockwise and then counterclockwise to return to the previous channel) results in a "freeze" (with dual display on).
The above observations were done on:
    - Digital Simplex (single frequencies for TX and RX)
    - DMR monitor on dual
    - GPS/APRS/BT off
    - Talkthrough checked
    - Memory set B was the one changed while set A was not touched
    - No custom screen used
I do hope this gets fixed. I did email Bridgecom about this a few days ago but no reply yet. They may need more time to provide feedback.
BTW, I've upgraded to FW1.14 before watching your video with the same results --> Downgraded to FW1.13 --> Upgraded again to FW1.14 while watching your video. Still with the same bugs as mentioned above... I hope this helps. I might just move back to FW1.13. At least it provides editing of the basic encryption (since the new AES encryption won't match the other HTs keys anyway). And FW1.13 allows dual display to still be used.

I've just purchased an Anytone 878 so are you saying its best NOT to update it yet to FW1.14? thanks Rob

    • @WrenchNutM8
      @WrenchNutM8 5 лет назад

@@RobertDodge Hi Rob! That actually depends on your needs. If the claimed new AES updates worked, then single mode is a decent compromise anytime. But since I've checked compatibility at my end with 3 other RT84s, the encryption updates only allowed you to input the code but didn't actually send the encryption matching the test radios. So you lose both basic and enhanced encryption unless you are communicating with a fellow 878 on the same update. I personally think that the 1.13 provided me with more of what I needed. Whether on Analog or Digital, I could still use the HT on dual screen mode. Yes you can easily switch on main and sub channels with P1 if you have that coded there. But it does not dual receive on single screen mode. So for almost thrice the price, the RT84 wins over encryption and dual screen/watch. Comparing the 2 brand of HTs I have, the 878 has much longer battery life and FM radio but the lesser priced radio does more real DMR work IMHO. I don't need 200k contacts if I can't hear them anyway. I could settle with 10000 contacts and hear them all without having any compromise on the features of the radio. I felt bad when the 878 started to show signs of freezing. It's like I spent thrice the amount and received half the functionality of the cheaper HT.
      - Good audio from speaker
      - Bluetooth
      - Multi-Colored screen
      - 200k contacts
      * ALL dependent on receive factors. We still need to hear them first right? In order to do that, compromise half your features first. That's what I felt.
      * The 878 is a good DMR watchdog though. Just do single display mode on 1.14, in my case.
So a downgrade may be a recourse for me if no updates arrive next month or so. I've tested all the above on 1.13 and the only compromise was the lack of the 32key encryption. IT's a feature so I want it working. I know you would too for the price.
"Returning the radio doesn't solve the problem." That's just a selfish move on my part that's why I had to share my findings. Releasing a proper firmware that allows full use of the features is the only way forward I guess. I have the plus version so hardware should've been upgraded to the Version 2 which has double the memory size. I'd gladly give up APRS to have everything else working since the 878 has compromises on APRS as well. That should free up ample memory space for the rest of the functionalities. Maybe a separate FW could be released giving priority to whatever function you would like to have on your HT. That puts the 878 on top of the food chain if they did that. Fingers XD.

You need to press the PTT in order to access various modes. I choose to fit a dummy load and reduce power to minimum which reduces RF being picked up in the poorly suppressed programming cable.
