So if you stager the joints as (opposed to a full sheet) can the sub floor be replaced without lifting the shell?
I'm at this stage! So relieved to see you replace it with relative ease. I know my belly pan has some holes in it from previous gas lines etc. How did you deal with water seepage + insulation? Thanks!
Did you put the floor under the c-channel or remove the channel bolts? I’m feeling way overwhelmed about this subfloor ☹️
The floor was definitely one of the most frustrating parts of the remodel! So after i used the circular saw to cut about 6 inches from the walls and removed the center plywood all that was left was the wood that was attached where the c channel was. I had to go around and ratchet the bolts out one by one.. the hard part was a lot of them were rusted badly and would just spin so i had to use an angle grinder with a cutting wheel to remove about half of them. I was worried about the shell popping off so i left some of the plywood and bolts in at different spots until i was able to put new plywood back in and re attach to the c channel. For that i ordered large self tapping screws like the ones holding down the plywood to the beams, it worked great and did the job well. As i went i would remove more of the old plywood from the c channel and continue the process. A lot of work but it got done! If we could do it, you guys definitely can too!
And u did a great job. U made it look easy. But I know it’s not cause I’m in the process of putting new subfloor in streamliner. It appears to be just a little bit differently made than the airstream. Great video thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! Best wishes on your remodel!
Crazy question only because this is my first time with a airstream..... is the wood you were replacing considered the subflooring? I've tried to watch several videos to see if there is another one I'm missing but do far I haven't. Sorry.... dumb here
This is so great What router setup did you use? How deep, how wide? Did you do multiple passes?
How has the spray foam been holding up? Hoping next summer I am going to start on my travel trailer that is mostly aluminum and not sure if it is going to corrode
Hi it is a wonderful job
I know it is been long time since this video
I have a question
In the corners around the channels it has to go a screw or pin but but how did you work on it ??
I am in this step now and looks impossible for me this
So you used self tapping screws in the c channel? how did you put them in without removing the belly pan?
Thanks for posting this! Can you give me an update on how the spray foam insulation has been for the walls? Any regrets or changes you would have made?
turnstray The spray foam has been great. No problems or complaints at all. The insulation value is great and it's been doing a great job at keeping the heat in this winter. 👍
Awesome! Thanks!
Also, a follow up. I see yall left your belly pan in when replacing the floor. You used self tapping screws for the u-channel? Which ones? Thanks!
Yes we used self tappers from Airstream Supply, 2'' screws I believe
How did the OSB work. Any reason you used it versus plywood. Also, the big RV mfg also bond the subfloor to the struts. Do you think that makes any difference?
what did you do about the huge rivets in the c-channel? Why did you have to route? other videos ive seen did not have to route? Did you screw the subfloor into the c-channel?
+Even a Girl Can Do It We routed our edges because the plywood we bought came in 3/4" only. The C-Channel is 1/2" so it would not fit. It came out very sturdy and secure. 👍 Yes we used self-tapping screws to secure the Advantech to the frame and to the C-Channel. Worked well.
notty pine looks awesome! I'm looking @purchasing airstream camper and living in it
+yamahchopper That's great! We are loving it!! Wishing you the best with your search
why did you choose advantech plywood? was there any sealer put on them?
+Even a Girl Can Do It Hey there. We chose Advantech because it has a good reputation for being resistant to moisture and is very durable. We did not seal ours.
You two are truly amazing..great work! I saw earlier that your frame was rusting out and then in this one it looks solid...did you cut out old frame and weld new steel in its place..or brace it? Thanks for all your info!
Thank you! We ground off the surface rust on most places. Some areas, especially towards the back of the frame were so bad that we did have to cut parts out and replace it by welding new pieces on. Then we painted it with Rustoleum. :)
I know that tired feeling too! Very nice work.
+One Leg at a Time lol thanks!
How is the body holding out being secured with the screws? I am about to start on my 1963 Airstream Safari and would like to go the route you did. Love the videos by the way.
It worked out perfectly. We’ve seen others go the same route as well and it works. Very sturdy. 👍
Best wishes on your project!
so you did not bolt down the c channel again, you just used self tapping screws to secure the shell back to the frame?
+Chris Hyde Yes we used extra long self tapping screws and did it by sections.
Is that OSB you put on the floor? Why not marine rated plywood? thanks
+Abc Defg No we used Advantech heavy duty plywood subfloor. Great stuff
did you insulate under the floor?
+Cory Boyd Yes. We used Ridged Board Foam and spray foam insulation
great job! any insulation under the floor ?
Thanks! Yes we used foam board insulation under the floor and some spray foam to fill in some of the cracks
Wow wonderful job!
Great video and awesome channel!! We are currently about to replace the subfloor in our Argosy! Just got it last week and starting the renovation process. Love what you guys did with yours, glad we can sub and follow along! We have a travel channel of our own and hope we can connect!
That’s great! Best wishes on your remodel. ❤️
How much did the spray foam $ And how's it in cold weather?
yamahchopper The kit cost us $600. That was the cheapest we could find and it has been awesome in cold weather. 👍 No complaints :)
Love in a Tin Can yeah 600$ is what I found to.I live in mn so it gets cold here .what's the coldest temperature you stayed in it ?
+yamahchopper So far the coldest it's gotten here yet has been somewhere near 0 degrees.
Just getting started on my own airstream remodel.
That’s awesome!
Ahh, thanks!
Nice work
Thank you!
feels good to walk on a solid floor doesn't it
Yes it does!!
How did you attach the bolts that go through the c channel to the end holes in the outriggers of the chasis without removing the bellypan? Also, how much did you router off the edges? Thanks
We didn’t have to worry about removing the C channel because we put large self tapping screws through the C channel into the outriggers from the top.
