The anonymity element is so interesting. I think that nowadays when i see models on a runway, i mostly ignore their faces/bodies, they became kinda transparent for me after watching so many shows. But when Margiela wraps the models head in fabric or even erases the whole silhouette like in these videos, i dont see them as transparent. The sole existence of these elements is making me look at the whole collection differently, unlike with the "transparent", non covered models, where i would only think about the clothes. Im not sure I see Margiela's models as anonymous... I think I see them as some kind of specific being/character that Margiela created. You look at them but they dont look back at you. I desperately try to see a random person or even myself in them, but I can't. Their existence and presence is loud. They make you feel uneasy and on the edge - who is it, what is it, etc. Thats what i think, at least.
PS Oh please try not to move your neck when not necessary Bliss! I had a neck injury and when i tried stretching or moving my neck it got worse. It has to be non-moving so that it can heal!

Same, it’s just sad that the last 3-4 episodes have been more like ads or teasers for the patreon episodes. I feel like they give me nothing when the first episodes were amazing and I feel like I learned so much.

I’m sorry you feel that way, Grandi. Your feelings are totally valid, but I may be able to shed a bit of context here. The public versions of these episodes (the version you’re seeing here) take about 30 hours of work each. The footage and images you see in the public episodes are not always easily found online. I have to comb through old message boards, unearth dead websites, and scan individual pages from books by hand. I’m also working as hard as I can to bring original thoughts into these videos so we can all learn together.
I certainly wish everything I made could be available for free, but in order to make this my career, I have to charge for bonus content. I’m currently living at my parents house so I can afford to make videos full time. Again, I wish everything was free, but I’ll continue to work to make the public content like this as high quality as it can be.
It sounds like you’ve been watching this series for a while, I really appreciate you sticking with me through this, it means a lot 💫💫

I am enjoying your appreciation of fashion as a story telling art. I utilized your explanation of the detailed face to the two dots and a circle as an example of how statistics are about groups not individuals. Too often in my work people want to dismiss the data because it doesn't look like their experience. But the point of statistics is to be inclusive. This really resonated with the team I was working with. I love it when an idea can morph beyond it's original point and cross boundaries.

The thing is about the ipod commercial is my only memory of it was it being parodied by making the silhouettes anime and or book characters and i[insert character quirk] like Harry Potter and it's iLived.

love the way you present and analyze these collections, i feel like youre explaining these concepts and techniques so even people who arent into the more academic side of fashion can grasp them, without dumbing them down.

Note for future videos: would love to see more content outside of Margiela and Rick Owens. Would love to see more videos on up-and-coming designers outside of just the big brand’s and houses. Think back to those up-and-coming designers that you talk about each year doing more in depth of videos on that works in their shows would be great. Era’s in a house such a Pheobe Philo at Celine, videos on Peter Do, what’s going on at Bottega

hey bliss. I wouldn't compare this Margiela to that Apple. the iPod ad has a similar formal appearance but it is supported by a strong vein of narcissism. the models in the iPod ad are in ghost form but also very distinct Ghost form. yes Margiela is staging and has staged wonderful electric events peopled by anonymous models but not what apple peddles in, you know..advertising

I get that u need the money to like keep doing this, and whereas I find it not only good but necessary that people donate if they have interest in ur videos and in what u have to offer, i find super annoying the way u publicize it, like super in your face, super u have to do this, idk i think u are not a common youtuber and i love that but the fact u talk about the patreon thee is always like a reminder of the youtube established way of self-promoting. Like i think if people want to pay for it, they aren't gonna want it more but maybe less if you say it the way you say it. I love your videos, and I'm planning on paying the patreon but just wanted to state my opinion, i tried to say it in the least harmful way i could find. Much love bliss

I guess I’m more meant that its purpose and function isn’t the same as the Apple advertisement. The Margiela video was meant for buyers and press only. I agree with you that that still makes it an advertisement, but would you agree it’s A very different advertisement than the iPod ad? 😇
