      real question: would you use that expression if she had pushed a year into (as someone else posted) "6th form college or university" but didn't finish?
      in US, the phrase is easily used for someone clearly smart enough to continue on w/ academic but takes another path ... so I'm genuinely asking, how do you phrase it for that situation?

    Kate did not 'drop out' of school at 16. She attended a theatre school and completed her GCSE's, which are the British equivalent of graduating high school. She simply didn't attend 6th form college or university, which was not uncommon in the 1990's. Also working in a sandwich shop is a pretty normal (even good) job for a 16 yr old with no other work experience.
    Please stop with the rags to riches angle, she was a middle class teenager who already had an agent and had been on TV by the time she got lucky and scored a movie role. She doesn't need to be cinder-frickin'-rella for her story to be interesting. She's great anyway, so focus on the true bits and don't make shit up, it's insulting to both her and your audience.

    • @ConnorEllisMusic
      @ConnorEllisMusic 6 лет назад +33

      Yeah, it's annoyed me as well. Only in the last few years are kids required to carry on with either 6th form or go to college or something in education.

    Leaving school at 16 in the UK isn't dropping out. School finishes at 16 here then everything beyond that is optional.

      Light_n_Fluffy Not true these days, you have to be in some kind of education till 18.

    • @Sam-mi9wi
      @Sam-mi9wi 7 лет назад +17

      Tim Hirst not true. You can leave at 16. However, depending on your birthday you may have to stick around until Christmas during 5th year of high school (this is just Scotland cause for some reason we follow the English law even though our school starts and ends at different dates).
      5th and 6th year of high school is optional. Just like University and College are optional.

    • @ATH_Berkshire
      @ATH_Berkshire 7 лет назад +7

      Sam McLatchie in England it’s a bit of both, you can work but must get some education after 16. www.gov.uk/know-when-you-can-leave-school

      Light_n_Fluffy totally agree about both the need for an educated population and an increase in productivity. More educated people and we wouldn’t have to deal with the Brexit mess.

    • @9313James
      @9313James 7 лет назад +17

      Light_n_Fluffy nowadays they have to either do an apprenticeship or be in education.
      My only point of the comment was that Kate Winslet didn't drop out of school at any age, so the video's title is wrong.

    This isn’t a dramatic title because you can leave school at 16 in the UK, and many people do.
    I did; I left school at 16 and joined the British Army, where I got my degree in Electrical Engineering.
    Leaving school at 16, you’re not viewed as a “high school dropout” like you are in America; many people choose apprenticeships over university.

    • @vrinda5303

    I guess the wording on the title caused quite a stir haha. UK Education 101: Compulsory Secondary School in the UK ends at age 16 (or Year 11) after you complete your GCSE exams. It doesn't matter what grade or whether you fail them, after 16 your school days are over. After that you can do an additional two years of education from 16-18 called Sixth Form (Year 12 and 13 of school). These two years serve to prepare students for further education at a higher level, and thus for their A-level (or equivalent) examinations. This depends on the course of study at higher level. Sixth form is not compulsory, so most students leave school in Year 11 and continue their own path. After you finish secondary school at Year 11, you can then proceed to higher education like College or University, granted you have the necessary grades for either, or do an apprenticeship. College entry is normally dependent on a set amount of GCSE's (or alternatives, such as life skills and experience, for certain applicants) based on the course or subject you decide to pursue. Sixth form is normally for students seeking to go into immediate employment or highest level education such as university, as A-levels or equivalent grades are usually required for entry. I guess A-levels sort of bypass the need to go into college for that particular area of study, where equivalent qualifications (i.e. BTEC's) can be achieved. Depending on the university, the course a student chooses might require several of these grades. There really isn't a set course. It just depends on the students goals and their career path. Though apparently nowadays students are required to taken on some form of study or apprenticeship until they are 18, but I'm not sure. But basically... School < College < University.

    I left school at 16, it’s normal in the uk. I completed and passed all my exams. Then went out to work. Nowadays high school finishes at age 16, then you have to complete your education by either doing 2 years of 6th form (which is still based in a high school grounds but the subjects you take are less and more specialised) or you go to college and do a 2 year apprenticeship. Then after that you can choose to go the university or not. But she did not ‘drop out’ if high school!

    If I was an actor and was asked to do a US chat show , I would pick Stephen Colbert to interview me. Forget Fallon , Kimmel and Corden .. I like this guy

    Stephen asks the perfect questions, things were all thinking of. For instance, child agent, I did imagine a child being her agent for a brief moment and then Stephen promptly asks that question. And then, did how she must have practiced practicing her lines, I was thinking the same thing. That is just such a perfect feeling to have, thank you Stephen Colbert.

    Glad to see Kate back, but
    Still no word on Allen sexually assaulting a child being an issue and that before continuing filming (if anyone want to film ith a child molestor) he should face justice ???

    • @Einomar
      @Einomar 7 лет назад +6

      s3lfFish Maybe he is not facing justice because there is not enough proof to convict him. Justice is not served by public opinion. I'm not arguing that he truly is innocent, cause I don't know if he is or isn't. Just pointing out that justice needs to be handled by the courts and the system put in place to handle such matters.
