    You mentioned the Ever Given - the ship that grounded and blocked traffic in both directions in the Suez Canal.
    The thing is... it wasn't just the "one ship" - by grounding where she did, it effected other ships for just under a week. Billions in cargo were, essentially, unable to go anywhere.
    Forunately, the Ever Given wasn't damaged - if she had sunk at that spot, it would've been an even bigger financial mess.
    It definitely showed how fragile the Suez Canal can be. It only takes a ship getting stuck in the right place to mess everything up.
    EDIT: The ship is named the Ever Given. Evergreen - which you can see in giant letters on the side of her hull - is the name of the company that owns the shp, the Evergreen Marine Corporation.

    So there were some MIT scientists back in the 70s I think it was - that did some statistical analysis of the state of the world, and calculated that global society would collapse around 2040. They revisited that paper last year I think, compared it to new statistical analysis of the current state of things, and found that we were right on schedule - maybe even ahead of schedule. Quite the terrifying thought no? Most people in history, perhaps even all people in history, were never aware, like really aware, that they were part of the generation that wouldn't just live to see the collapse of society but would be actively trying to survive during it. Now we have the forethought and knowledge to predict these things ahead of time and we are still marching right towards it instead of doing something about it.

    • @direnova6284
      @direnova6284 2 года назад

      I saw that study and the predictions are right on course for society to collapse. Nothing will be done to avoid this just like global warming. They just gotta have their short term profits and they're going to kill us all. They btw are the unfettered corporate machines that politicians bow to for the jobs they'll get when they leave politics.

    Collapse isn't sudden, in fact is very gradual, and I would argue we're already marching towards it.
    I have a theory of why civilizations collapse. Once survival stops being a priority, abundance has been created, complacency sets in. In that complacent state the lack of interest in the things that enabled such progress develops because a complacent society becomes lazy. I'd say we're already seeing evidence of that.
    Another thing is the political landscape. Rome didn't just combust, the political strife of its ruling class contributed very heavily to its demise. It's easy to look at the world today and see the fragile balance the different warring factions have reached fraying. Either world politics ends up reaching new balance or we all suffer.
    All in all, the state of the world right now is very precarious. The US is no safer than Syria was before it collapsed either. The rise of militancy and the militant mindset should worry Americans. And it isn't particularly confined to one political party or ideology either, ignoring the violence of one faction while amplifying the violence of another only serves as a catalyst for war.

    Hmm, I do think his reasons for optimism are predicated on the idea that what brings about the collapse of human civilisation doesn't also bring about the wholesale collapse of the ecosphere. At this moment in history, that is far from assured. Things like climate change and global thermonuclear war, for example, could largely or even entirely destroy the Earth's ecosphere, in which case it wouldn't matter which or how many humans survive the initial collapse. For example, it won't matter that a lot of people that understand farming survived, we still won't be able to grow crops if the symbiotic soil fungi and microbes that plants rely on for their survival are all wiped out or if the insects, birds, and small mammals we rely on to furtilize our crops are all gone or if the water cycle is so messed up it is no longer reliably predictable. Likewise, it won't matter much if a lot of fishermen and women survive if there's no fish left in the oceans. Etc, etc, etc.
    At the rate we're going I think the collapse of human civilisation as we currently know it is inevitable. How badly we screw up the rest of the planet's ecosphere will determine whether or not we persist as a species afterwards and to what extent we might recover.

    • @taoist32
      @taoist32 2 года назад +1

      I agree. He didn’t explain the worst case scenario where everyone just dies because everything on planet Earth dies at the same time. But, that’s human emotion, believing and hoping that we can survive just about anything. For the most part, it’s true. However, some things can end all life such as the Yellowstone supervolcano, an Earth ending asteroid, all out nuclear war. I did have an interesting vision back in summer of 2020. As the pandemic was escalating, I was with friends camping in Tahoe. Around 9pm, I went to my tent with a stomachache. Instead of sleeping, my mind became clear and this “vision” appeared. I’m not into mysticism or religion, but this was straight out a vision that just beamed into my mind. I was still in Tahoe, but my friends were gone and instead of the usual greenery of Tahoe it was a wasteland. No trees, no water, basically just dirt. I found myself panicking and attempting to find somebody. Finally, I met this guy walking his dog. I asked for help, and he explained what happened. We were in the year 2040. This guy told me we had a third world war in 2025 and it lasted until 2030 where it became an all out nuclear war. In the end, the majority of global population was killed. Only a handful of survivors existed, and they lived as nomads since no one had any knowledge of infrastructure or technology. Since most of the Earth was wasteland, survivors did come up with creative ways to grow vegetables. However, they were not able to grow an abundance of food. I believe the population, at least in America, was around 800,000-1,000,000. Scattered throughout America but barely surviving. And that’s where the vision ended. Not sure if you will respond, just thought it was an interesting thing I had happen to me 2 years ago.

    I have to say, I'm a bit skeptical right from the outset - this video seems to be treating the entire earth as if it's tilted to the West - it's common knowledge that, historically, world civilizations have been centered around the Silk Road - that's the whole point of the Silk Road, a trade route linking the world's major civilizations
    - so, besides the Mediterranean, we've got West Asia, South Asia, East Asia, historically where most of the world's population has been based - This video isn't a historical survey, but it's making reference to general historical conditions as a base for its projections - so how is it possible that these regions, centers of world civilization for millennia - are totally off the radar screen here, not referred to at all, not even as marks on the briefly shown maps?
    - The Persian Empires and the later Islamic Empires were ongoing rivals with the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and later West European powers - there's much speculation as to why China wasn't the first to industrialize, or colonize the Americas, considering the massive world power it had reached by around 1000 AD - the whole motive for Europe's later Age of Exploration was to find a more direct way to reach regions like India and China - why? - to access the enormous wealth being generated from those places
    - so I wonder what mode of selection was used w this video - using Rome as a reference is fairly common, but "forgetting" everything east of that? They should take a page from your book - since GETJaby usually has a far more fully international perspective

      I believe that this video isn't focus on like which region is more powerful or more advance than another. It's focus on how a civilization can collapse even though it was thriving. And the Roman empire was just happened to be a great example for this idea. Civilization here doesn't mean the whole earth. It can just be a country, a region, a continent. Like how in the videos, he said that a civilization can collapse by itself or be absorbed by another better more advance civilization.

    To, VERY BRIEFLY, clarify some terms:
    CIVILIZATIONS consists of (but are not limited to): Agriculture, Government, Written Language, and Military Strength. However, not all civilizations have central governments.
    Within a civilization:
    THE CITY STATE: An independant city within a government and their own way of doing things. e.g. Rome, Athens, Sparta, Carthage, Monaco. A city-state is NOT a small country with only one city in it. It is an independent city.
    THE COUNTRY: Land that is controlled by a single government. e.g. Ancient Macedonia, Canada, United States.
    THE EMPIRE: A type of political unit with aspirations to control lands beyond their borders. Imperialism refers to the practice of a country's extending its political power - especially through the acquisition of conquered territory. e.g. Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, and British. Without a central government, a civilization cannot be classified as an empire.

    As much as I love Kurzgesagt, sadly, I feel like this video glosses over some pretty crucial points :
    Sure, the ratio of people able to farm food might still be there in case of a drastic culling of mankind (especially since the townsfolks, who don't know how to grow food, will most likely be the first ones who die of starvation en masse, whereas the rural folks will somehow fare better since they know how to grow their own food), but by then, the soil would be so spoiled (watch Sadguru speak about the state of global soil and how it's reaching a breaking point due to overagriculture) that even them wouldn't survive for too long, as nothing will grow from an exhausted soil anymore.
    Also, without cities, no advanced techs for things like education or medecine, so no teachers nor doctors, so even if some people outside the cities can survive the famine, they will most likely die from the next pandemic (although if people are not living in cities anymore, the risk of a pandemic actually drastically drops), or the intellectual level of the remaining population will simply drop till there is not a single shred of modern civilisation anymore (nobody having access to computers or phones, since there won't be anyone left knowing how to operate a power plant, hence no electricity), getting back into obscurantism and throwing people in the arms of wannabe spiritual gurus or religious zealots, and it's gonna be 1000AD all over again...

    This just shows that we are still vulnerable to Mother Nature. A global collapse would bring us back to our nomadic roots. Learning to grow vegetables, herd sheep and cattle, hunt and pick herbs and mushrooms. Learning what type of water is best to drink from and where to get it. If the majority of the world died, there will be some people who will survive. Unfortunately, they may not be the ones who understand how to build modern infrastructure or build phones or computers. And if it’s an environmental disaster or nuclear war, having crops would be difficult if not impossible to grow anything.

    Humanity could likely survive most terrestrial catastrophes, when we talk about asteroids or the sun burping that's when shit gets dicey. Younger Dryas impact at the end of the last ice age 12,000 years ago is good example, of course we survived that but it could get much worse.

    You could see the fear and worry on their faces. Its a sad state of affairs, but unlike the past the earth has never been as connected as it is now. When the destruction hits it will be worst than what anyone can imagine, I think all the seed vaults and underground bases will make little difference in the end because the event that will take place will be out of the realm of human prevention.
    Most likely many events will take place before the final event. Nuclear War, Biological plague, Famine, and Natural. If all these were to take place in short order, there wouldn't be much that can be done because one wave after another would keep destroying the survivors.
    Of course a Super Nova of our Sun would end everything in our solar system in fire.
    All things must eventually come to an end in the world, but I think it's sad that mankind has not learned from the warnings given long ago that choosing light over darkness, Love over Hate, and Gentleness over Violence was the key and that there was always an option for us to change if we really wanted it and accepted what was offered us.

    This is only about the Western Hemisphere. The east show more continuous civilizations the longest existing one being in India.(The poverty that many like to point out has started post Invasions/colonization and is very transient and of short duration in India’s 10000 yrs old history).Maybe there’s a lesson there,in the basic philosophy of what constitutes progress and such. And how we look at our resources and creating a balance with it.

    The issue with the narrative of this subject is its not taking into account of the reality of so called modern aspects of humanities developments.....its not in equal distribution and its not in the same levels in many places to this day, even with globalisation. There are some places that still exist in the age of hunting/gathering and some remote places that thrives using technologies that was prevalent in the 50's & 60's. Some developing nations are trying to catch up but their failing systems of managing such development is hindering the pace. We are really not a global advanced scale, its very local and fragmented.
