I have one of these and in my opinion it's the best AM only rig that Cobra makes and the best AM only rig that I currently own! My biggest issues so far have been: 1. I can slightly hear the weather radio station receiver under the static on CB band. (Makes it difficult to hear weaker CB stations. I have to keep the weather channel on the one with the most quiet static or with the weakest audio so as to leave my CB'ing alone!) 2. The main knob has a weak shaft and was the first thing to break. (I ordered the new part $30 or so and installed it.) 3. When using higher power external amp or if SWR goes high, the unit flips over to PA or weather channels! 4. My SWR 'Cal' does nothing, a wasted knob. (May have gotten disconnected somehow.) 5. My talk-back also doesn't really work, so that's another wasted knob (May have gotten disconnected too or needs a bit of work inside.) - Other than a few minor issues the thing was 'Sparky' tuned and sounds amazing, but I too want to drop the watts and run my KL-203. (or find a real small high drive amp - good luck!) I may even want something smaller like a KL-80 as I am looking to TX at 60w Max (15w-45w swinging to 60w or so), or at least keep my PEP 100% below 120w. (*I may need to keep it to 30w-40w max!) (I will be running off an auxiliary cigarette lighter socket in a nicer Mercedes Benz, it's rated at 120w Max. I am aware that the process to make 1 watt cost more than 1 watt, closer to 2, so I would back myself off to roughly 50% of max socket rating.) *Referencing stuff like this: -How many amps does a 50 watt radio draw? A typical 50 watt land mobile pulls 0.5 amps in receive and 12.5 amps in transmit, and normally has a 15 amp fuse. Electrically speaking, 12.5 amps@12 volts allows for 150 watts. (So, to properly run a 50w radio your power system should be rated for 150w or 3x the power used.) (This would tell me to divide by 3 and run only 30w-40w max from a 120w max power source.) Maybe I need an old mosquito amp!

Nice job on the 29 it gets out there now with the kl 203 the receive is nice and clean the dial a watt is great I use 1 to 2 watts with the amp or roll it up to 5 watts barefoot how awesome is that! Thanks 577 your the man!!
I shoulda have known you'd be the man to talk to, 577! Do you use the stock RF gain pot ? I have a crazy hacked up 29 with a variable mod not done like I have ever seen before... Correcting with the tip-120 for sure. I am sure the RF pot in it now is toasted... thanks !!

@@georgealbertacanadaeh1038 I'm sorry bro I don't share my mods openly but if you Google variable power mod cobra 29 I saw a video from 1883 that was similar to mine..it's not the mod that makes a radio kick ass it's the tune.
@@577buttfan I never did that. Gonna get rid of it anyway. I use my cobra 148 GTL DX with a teardrop 575 m6 mic and a alinco dx 10 with a silver rod on a tower block roof 18 floors. I get out very well. I have a 100watt amp but I don't really need it. Height is might. I'm here in London

I use a 1-5K pot both work great.Might have to add a little resitance to ground to get it how you like.

Wouldn't the diode drop the input voltage .7 volts?
Of coarse it will...but losing .6v and gaining reverse polarity protection is the trade off.
