I hated this add too! I can't believe your deep diving into roasting them down to the cent 🎉👏🏼👏🏼
I might have a problem.
Nah!!!
@@UnnaturalVegan No. You are a saint! Fighting the good fight.
She’s the goat!!
M
The scientist in me flinches every time I see the cost per serving in the ad without mentioning the grams of the ingredient. Damn, I'd be happy if they mentioned volumetric measurements
Yh, usually commercial serving sizes are very small. My bowl of oat is probably double than that sachet. If mine comes to ~£3.50 and theirs to £2.60 then i still win cuz i ate double the amount and actually feel full.
Yes, their "serving" wouldn't even be enough for me; let alone a tall person, or a man. It's the same way so many in-store items have miniscule serving sizes so they can say, "Only X calorie per serving!" when almost everyone except a toddler would need twice that amount or more.
This ad is everywhere and I was just so confused. Why would I buy a container for overnight oats. Why not just…dump the oats in a bowl with liquid overnight?
I appreciate you taking the time to calculate all this. I also really appreciate your disclaimer of not making fun of people choosing to buy this! Just because a product or its advertising is stupid, doesn't mean the people buying it are
free range banana 😂
Confession, I do buy oats overnight. I have a good income, and it's hard for me to put together a 1 minute high protein breakfast that also has variety. I'm able to make something similar on my own, but I can only realistically prep a few flavors without having tons of ingredients in my pantry.
An anon redditor suggested Chai oats. Basically just adding cinnamon makes it amazing. But with a lil black tea & spices, it's next level ❤
I’ll make 6 servings in my instantpot and reheat but it does take longer than a minute
I don't think the point of the video was to shame people buying this, if you feel the product is worth it for you then go ahead! But the add they made is misleading and you can do it cheaper at home if you want to.
My husband likes to prep his overnight oats on Sunday evenings so that they are ready to grab and go throughout the week. You can mix things up with powdered peanut butter, cinnamon, and also a variety of different nuts and fruits. He also adds chia and flax. But if the packets work for you, then that’s awesome!
It takes me like two minutes before going to bed putting in a bowl my oats, nuts, seeds and some cinnamon and water. Then again a couple of minutes in the morning while I'm getting my coffee ready adding the soy yoghurt, berries and some other fruit.
I make my own overnight oats, but I heat them up in the microwave because I don't like cold oats either. Making them this way is much better than having to wash a pan.
That's clever! Why haven't I thought of this before? 😅 I'll try this
I do this, too! I like the creamier consistency of my rolled oats when they've been soaking in soy milk all night compared to if I just make it like normal in the morning.
I came here to say this! I make my oatmeal with soy milk and the milk will break if I cook too aggressively. This way they are soft and just need brought up to temperature.
Did you know you can just cook oats in the microwave? No need for the overnight part, just bring to a boil, reduce power and simmer for however long is needed (if you use quick oats none is needed). I never waste a pot on porridges lol
@@y-yyy Yes, but I like the texture better when I soak them overnight.
"I'd rather die." Wow! That escalated quickly... talk about a hill to die on 🤣
"To that I say... I would rather die" 😂😂
great fact check video. I don't really want dessert for breakfast -- and all these premade things tend to be super sweet.
Agreed! When I do get them for travel I mix it with a plain packet cuz it's just too sweet 😅
Yeah, I don't so sweet things for breakfast either, so the only sweetness I have in mind is half a mashed banana and then the cinnamon makes it taste sweeter somehow. It's good
You're just so fair. You give people the benefit of the doubt and point out your own mistakes or inconsistencies. There are so many other great attributes too. Just wanted to say thank you for being a voice for good
280 calories jeeze. I eat that as a snack between stops while tree climbing, not as a meal...
What I mainly got out of this is that I'm still so happy that we use price and kcal per 100g/100ml + how many grams/ml are in a packet of whatever you buy so not calories and prices are the same across the line between all brands to compare for pretty much all food prodicts.
Agreed "per serving" measurements make zero sense 😂
for real, what the hell is a serving
Nobody ever buys premade things because it's cheaper. You always go for convenience. If I liked oats (I personally hate them) those premade ones would be great emergency food, to keep around for days when you overslept, or for keeping in the office drawer just in case. Convenience. That's why I buy pre-steamed beets (they are already peeled and peeling beets stains everything), cooked potatoes. Or sandwiches from the store, it helps me get more variety in my diet without wasting the products that would be used once and forgotten in the fridge (thank you ADHD brain)
She says that at 10:30 in the video
The perfect opportunity to use the Arrested Development banana meme 😭 rip
Oats Overnight really DOES use a pile of chia seeds in each serving, ick.
Love this ❤️ I’m literally prepping a video right now on super cheap breakfasts using oats. They’re so cheap and versatile and prep can be done in advance to negate the need to buy these packets anyway. 😊
"why would you want cookies first thing in the morning?" You must not have ever had Oreo O's.
I bought mason jars and a giant thing of oats to start making overnight oats but it's been 5 months and for some reason, I can't get myself to prep it. I refuse to waste that much money on premade overnight oats tho.
Just make oatmeal in the mornings, it's much nicer.
Just start by putting the oats in the jars. Then another day maybe you can work up the will to put in dry ingredients, even one at a time if necessary. They can wait there until you're ready to add wet ingredients and actually put them in the fridge.
For me, it's a very quick affair once I finish doing the dinner dishes. I have my oats, seeds and nuts on the kitchen counter. So, before leaving the kitchen after dinner clean up, I just grab a bowl, mix those with some spices and water, and into the fridge. It's less than a minute, and it's so great to have that wonderful breakfast ready. Then again, in the morning, one minute into the microwave, and then just adding the fruit & yoghurt and protein powder while I'm getting my coffee ready. I've been doing it for a year now and it's become so easy.
Don't grind coffee because it's cheaper... Grind it because it's orders of magnitude better (and don't buy from grocery stores).
Love,
Your friendly neighborhood coffee snob 😉
I had a tablespoon of Chia seeds to my overnight oats...
Yeah I add a tablespoon of flax haha. Idk why that was so strange to her but otherwise I agreed with everything.
@@MagicTurtle643 right great for texture.
The 9:56 “I’d rather die” comment to grinding coffee almost make me spit my drink out. Lol
I’m SO glad you covered this. The first time the ad came up for me, I watched the whole thing because I was so blown away by the reach
So accurate, seriously don't get why they're trying to take the money saving angle. I do buy packets for when I'm away from home and want the convenience... but know that it's convenience and pay more for just that 😅
The phrase “gluten free oats” is a pet peeve because it seems to be targeted at people who think gluten is bad but don’t really know anything about gluten and what foods have gluten.
Not really - a good chunk of oats ~aren't~ because they are processed and sometimes grown in overlapping areas so labeling is kind of important. As a celiac, I have to be pretty careful otherwise, well. I'm not gonna gross you out with details but, um. Yeah. I don't really have time to sit in what my husband calls the smallest library in the house for hours, ya know? Or lay down praying for death because I ate something as stupid as oats. (If I'm gonna make myself ill, it dang well isn't going to be for a bowl of oats. There had better be something worth it!) The labeling is a pain and it can become comical (I've seen it slapped on a bag of frozen broccoli!) But on items that actually sometimes aren't... it's kind of vital. (That said, I have to resist the urge to smack people who jump on it as a diet. Just eat the freaking bread already! My chronic illness isn't a fad diet.)
@@Magpiebard oh wow! Thanks for setting me straight! TIL!!! Sorry about the celiacs that sucks
Can you do more of these videos? I like to see when you run the numbers and break down how we can save more moolah!
My husband loves and makes his own overnight oats. He does not add protein powder. He uses a TB of chia seeds. He puts my homemade vanilla extract in his and some ground golden flax. It is not expensive or he would not do it. He uses mason jars and makes 5 at a time. He uses vanilla almond milk also. He uses maple syrup, no other sweetener.
I don’t even have to math this out. In what world is buying pre-made, prepackaged food less expensive than making it at home?
It's really difficult for me to follow american nutrition labels, I'm used to being given the calories per 100 grams. Sometimes they then add portion calories, but it's optional.
Also the oats I buy here are storebrand and come to 1,53€ per kg :D
i put 2 tablespoons of chia seeds in my oatmeal 🙈
Maple syrup is a rollercoaster of price and quality. You can get brown sugar water for $3.00 a gallon.
Love Homemade overnight oats. And yes I put 2 Tbsp of Chia & Flax Seeds in them. But I add Almond butter and chocolate chips. It's delicious and can give you 20 g fiber & protein. Good stuff.
Oh my stomach wouldn't be able to take that much fiber, 2 tbsp of chia 😱
@@wavy6470ok, you're probably going to be aghast when I describe my typical oatmeal ingredient mix (4-5 days a week):
1 cup oatmeal
1-2 tablespoons each of chia, hemp & flaxseed
Few dashes of cinnamon
Whole medium banana
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1-2 table spoons of sunflower / pumpkin seed mix
Handful of walnuts on top
3/4 cup soy milk
Keeps me satiated for almost 2.5 hours, then on to my next meal.
It is funny to look at the american prices of food. People in my country (Czechia) are mad, because they believe we have expensive food… yet the premade oatmeal from a local brand costs around 80 cents per serving (okay, it has like 10 grams of protein, but its vegan and really tasty). Thanks for the price breakdown, and the whole video, I enjoyed it a lot!
Here in Spain too. Oats can cost 0.95 for 500 gr in my local supermarket. In Belgium, where I live part time, it's around 1.50€ for organic oats, also 500 gr. But I guess US salaries are much higher
i love this how you get so detailed about such an advertisment. this is really good reporting. i agree with you on the cold oats lol
I'm living for you roasting the crap out of this product lmao
Your ground coffee take made me laugh out loud
You don't eat cookies first thing in the morning? 👀
You DRINK it?! Oh my fuck no!!
love this rant! ^^
Love this content! I’m from Canada so our prices are almost always higher, but the info is still very relevant 😊
I recently saw this ad for the first time and I had to do my own investigation. I chose the vanilla flavored package to price compare and I shopped for ALL of the ingredients listed on the package. My little rural grocery store did not carry the monk fruit or the vanilla powder so I had to source those online. Then I added up the cost breaking it down by serving size indicated on the package. Ingredients being listed on the package from most to least I can tell you they aren't using 1/4 tsp of Himalayan pink salt or 2 tsp of monk fruit sugar in each package. Considering monk fruit is the last thing listed beneath vanilla powder and the salt they have to be using negligible amounts. That said the total cost I got by using strictly the serving sizes on the packages and not in relation to the order of ingredients on the Oats overnight package came to a grand total of $3.03. If one were to use the serving suggestions on the ingredient packages it would be absolutely awful to eat.
In no particular order that would be : 1 TBS sweet cream powder, 2 heaping TBS protein powder, 2 TBS chia seeds, 3 TBS flax seed, 1 tsp maple sugar, 1/4 tsp pink sea salt, 1 tsp vanilla bean powder, 1/2 cup old fashioned oats. If one were to skip the sweet cream powder and monk fruit sugar, reduce the chia seeds, flax seeds, protein powder and salt, switch maple sugar to maple syrup, and up the oats from 1/2 cup to 1 cup and add vanilla extract instead of vanilla powder (btw the vanilla powder I sourced was $10.99 for a half ounce!!!) the total cost would come to right around $1.87. That's shopping at the only grocery store in my town so prices vary depending on location. And to add insult to injury it would still have more protein than their product. Thank you for your deep dive. It was fun to compare your results to mine.
Interesting to see the prices and calculations. 42 ounce of oats cost 4,29 dollar - in Germany the same amount of regular oats costs 1,88 euro (= 2,08 dollar).
In Belgium it's about 1.5€ for organic for 500 gr. In Spain, 0.95 for regular (non organic). It's really cheap. Some weeks I add quinoa, buckwheat, barley or miller which I cook during the weekend.
me putting two tablespoons of flax seeds in my oatmeal every morning 😅
I think the main reason I grind my own coffee is how disgusted I was to find out the government allows a certain amount of ground up cockroaches/bugs in our ground coffee. Same thing as how they allow a certain amount of mouse hair to be in jars of peanut butter. At least, when you grind your own beans, you know what you’re drinking. Plus the flavor/aroma is so much more intense. I highly recommend giving it a try. If you’ve never done it before, you might be surprised at how easily you find yourself converting.
Also a scoop of protein powder is usually huge- like several tbsp so I'm never using a full scoop in a bowl of oatmeal
Can u make a video about Aubrey Plaza and the Got Milk campaign??
Agreed, that was worse.
I'd love our thoughts on that new "Got Wood" ad I keep seeing.... it's quite terrible lolol
.... I'd.... I'd put two tbsp of flax seeds.... 😂
I always put a tablespoon of chia seeds in my overnight oats
I eat oatmeal with almonds, cinnamon, blueberries, chia & flax everyday, I will never eat overnight oats they are a mushy mess in my mouth.
I ate my homemade Overnight Oats watching this video 😂. I did the math (1/3 cup oats with milk, water, soy yoghurt, protein powder "Vanilla Cookie", and cherries) and it cost me 1,52 Euro (1,68 $) here in Germany. Just banana would be way cheaper and sometimes I take a much cheaper brand of protein.
Yes, I haven't made the calculation, but for me, also in Europe (Belgium & Spain) it's much cheaper than what she calculates for the US.
That boneless banana pic killed me! 😂
The main reason people would get it is because theyy do not want to spend $80 on a bunch of gluten free organic chia seeds and protein powder from whole foods, try it once, and realize they hate overnight oats.
I saw that ad and instantly shook my head. Like who approved this ad and didn’t think people would figure out the price difference. Also, monk fruit is nasty. Lol.
Who would put 2 table spoons of chia?
I put 1 chia 3 flaxswed. Tablespoons
😉
"boneless banana"
Yes i love when my bananas are deboned.
At my local grocery bananas are 67 cents a pound, so maybe that's where they got 67 from
So yeah.... my child eats more calories than this as a snack. ADULTS NEED MORE CALORIES! Oats are such a cheap and plentiful protein source this is almost satirical. If you don't give your body enough it will find ways to make it up, so I guess their target market is someone who obsesses over their sub 300 "healthy" breakfast and then goes to dunkin donuts for a 600 cal milk and sugar drink. Hooray!
Lost it at the Freelee picture 💀
OMG I love grinding my own beans. It's part of the experience!! ☕️
There is a Swedish study on vegetarian ”meat” from Chalmers by prof. Ann-Sofie Sandberg and dr Cecilia Mayer Labba, published in scientific publication Nutrients, that shows that much less iron and zinc can be absorbed than what is often declared because phytic acid becomes concentrated during production of these products. It could be made better if ways of production were changed (for example with fermentation). Is this something you would take a look at?
I love the beautiful drawings behind you 😍
I will say, I generally hate overnight oats but I was gifted the oats overnight vegan variety pack and everything was actually really good. Not something I would pay for on the regular though.
The thing I take from this is not only is this something is so easy to make yourself, but the price of the ingredients you looked up was so expensive. American food shopping is so expensive. Nearly all of this would be so much cheaper hear in the UK. I really don’t understand what is going on with food prices in the US. 🤷♀️
She lives in Portland. It's a high cost of living area. Please do not base your entire knowledge of U.S. food costs on just one place - this country is massive and the economy varies wildly.
Come to Australia and think again 😂
However, price comparison between two countries make no sense.
Me sitting here wanting cookies for breakfast... 😆
I like pre-made oatmeal for work in case I dont have time to pack a meal. I love making my own overnight oats with fresh fruits and vegan yogurt though. I find it much more filling when I make my own.
I had good intentions and bought the stuff to make my own. Then I forgot about it, it expired and was thrown out. So I buy premade ones, it doesn’t expire and I eat it.
8:40 what is that? Is it an app to make stats of your personal nutrition? I didn't know those so detailed existed. Are they expensive to have or use?
Do you use Ibotta? I get to try a lot of vegan stuff with good rebates from there, such as 2 Violife cream cheeses that have been sitting in my fridge.
I will say, I do work with one person who put 2tbs of chia and 2tbs of flax in one cup of oats, and they only buy organic, and they add mango.... So they are probably paying that much per serving 😅
But love the cost breakdowns!
Hahahah thank you for doing the math for me! I also saw this ad and was thoroughly embarrassed for anyone who could fall for that shit.
I can't believe you buy the broccolli in a bag... unsubscribed. jk, lol: thanks for another great video
"I'd rather die" lol
LOVE videos like this!! Crunch those numbers! 😉😄😜
Your hair looks so pretty 🥰
Thank you! Blow drying makes it so shiny.
I love overnight oats. Have been making it basically every day for the last 4 years
WinCo has cheap steel cut oats about a $1 a pound. They also have fresh peanuts you grind to make peanut butter for $2 a pound. I make oatmeal for a week with two cups of steel cut oats, 1/3 pound of the fresh peanut butter, add raisins that are cheap and two cut up apples and some cinnamon. And yes I eat it cold. Tastes delicious!
Damn, that sounds great. Wish we had bulk stores this cheap on the east coast - the only stores with bulk bins in my area seem to be Whole Foods or other overpriced places.
@@oksanakaido8437 I go to Whole Foods for one reason and that is their unsweetened soy milk. Their bulk is "organic" so they charge twice as much for everything or some times quadruple the regular price.
The flavor that gets me is mint chocolate chip. Not on my oatmeal, thanks.
I buy pre-portioned porridge (they come in paper bags though) and the ones I buy come with apples, sultanas, cinnamon and chia seeds. I know its more expensive but its so easy and I can take them to work and make them at work with water in the microwave. Agreed about the overnight oats thing, that's gross. Oats should be eaten hot, we're not eating gruel in the workhouse here!
But you could make that mix at home every few weeks and pack it in bags. Plastic or paper.
Overnight oats are nasty. 😂. I just don’t get the obsession with them.
Overnight oats that cost even $2/serving are a ridiculous ripoff
You are epic!! I’d fn die too if I had to grind my coffee 🤣
Based on the 5 grams of fat per serving in Oats Overnight, they aren’t even adding 1 teaspoon each of flax and chia.
Holy crap this might be the best ad for eating oats in the morning, 400 cal and 30g protein, AMAZING, buying all this rn!!
Off topic but you look great! Love your shirt and hair.
Bro…get a coffee pot that grinds the beans. Lol You’ll never go back :)
Just today, I bought some "Purely Elizabeth" oatmeal packets because they were on sale. I have them for a snack; not in place of oatmeal I make myself. The other thing is, people who would eat the Oats Overnight probably still buy raw oats, maple syrup, flaxseed/meal, etc. And I know she's breaking it down per serving but when you have maple syrup, are you really paying attention to where you used how many servings? I just think it's a stretch for them to say it's cheaper at all. I 100% agree that it's not enough calories for a meal.
Have you seen and will you comment on the Aubrey Plaza milk commercials? Ugh. I'm not raging over it like some are but it's eyeroll-inducing at the very least
I hadn't heard about the milk commercial, but you made me curious. The thumbnail alone is enough to imagine what her message is. Ugh 🙄
🥴 cold oatmeal. I hate when the only vegan breakfast option at a cafe is cold, soggy, overnight oats. No thank you!!
Edit: these could be good for camping
I make my instant oats with like 2 spoons of lukewarm water per pack. I don't like hot oatmeal.
The best thing for me is a Quaker premade brown sugar oatmeal pack.
Isn't gluten free oatmeal not really possible? I think the UK has a ruling "gluten-free" must have absolutely 0 gluten whereas US goes by some ppm "tolerance" standard
No, the global stance is
Cold oatmeal, yuck... Too easy to cook. Great video.
the person I at work buys them and still heats it up
I hate oatmeal other than as a cookie so they can keep those cold ones and drinks that’s just 🤢 🤮
I found this because I was going to do the math myself.
You also have to keep in mind that you would not necessarily need all the ingredients they use.
Personally I don’t like flax seed and I also wouldn’t need the monk fruit (because it’s a sweetener with little to no nutritional value) or maple syrup (cause it’s another sweetener) and I don’t add sugar to my oatmeal now.
I did finally give in a while back and tried Oats Overnight.....the taste was OK but nothing spectacular. The chocolate flavors all tasted the same. Convenient? Yes. Worth it? No.
Love your hair today
but why do they add so much shit in it? In my overnight oats I use oats, protein powder, soymilk some berries, chia and maybe some peanut butter. There is no way that is more expensive than buying their junk lol
I just get quaker or store brand old fashioned oats. $4.00 for 30 servings. Oats are gluten free unless contaminated. I don't doctor my oats. I like them plain. So, 15 cents per serving.
Kroger whole grain oats is gluten free. Why would oats have wheat product in them? Aren't they all gluten free?
I eat oatmeal packs at hotels. I don’t buy it. Also you’re right, overnight oats kinda suck ass.
Overnight oats are very reminiscent of cottage cheese for me 🥴
To that I’d say… I’d rather die. 😂
This is how I feel about budgeting tho tbh
Omg I am so annoyed every time i see this ad 😂 overnight oats are so gross. Im sticking to my basic baked oats, lmao
