I have over 5000 hours piloting balloons in 5 countries with zero injuries, or wrecked balloons. These are almost all low hour newbies in private balloons whose skill level did not match conditions. The most important part of flying balloons is knowing when to stay on the ground and not push it. In Africa we often landed doing 20kts. No powerlines, no obstructions, no buildings, level off 1-2ft above the ground, open the top, and enjoy a loooong drag to a stop. Great fun if basket is fitted for pax to be seated on long cushions with their back to the landing, both hands on the oh shit handles, and front of the basket fitted with skids. Stupid is as stupid does.
I don't think it is quite fair to comment on Newbie/private pilots! If you actually watch the original videos these are pilots with a lot of experience! And some with commercial ratings! There is a difference between Confidence and being Cocky! And weather can catch us all out!
the idea of a hot air balloon using nuclear energy will allow humans to stay longer in the earth's atmosphere. The air balloon should have a stronger frame and have an aerodynamic shape and the ability to maneuver in all directions instead of just moving up
Yeah, there are a lot of things I'll do or have done, but you won't find me hopping into a hot air balloon. Done it once as a kid who knew no different, but as an adult I'll not do it and I'll talk sense into people I know who want to. Skydiving = done and want to be licensed, boxing = done with more wins than losses, scuba = done and getting certified, motorcycling = do when it's not raining or snowing, cliff jumping = done, climbing with harness = love it...hot air balloon = nope, that is a hard pass! I do not see the thrill in something you can only control ascent and descent in, f*k all that! lol
