Even before watching this video my comment is: Greece is very safe. It has one of the lowest crinimatily rates in Europe let alone the world. I have been to Greece 50-60 times now (I travel 2-3 per year, and do it over 20 years now) and I can 100% say that Greece is extremely safe. I don't regard Athens as all of Greece. I regard Athens as 0.05% of Greece were things like pick pocketing may exist. Its also the city with the most foreign people by far. The rest of Greece is wonderful. I have been so many times to Crete in the south all the way to Macedonia and Halkidiki in the North in Greece and so many regions and islands inbetween. It's tranquil and wonderful. After watching the video. I agree with everything. But I still want to stress that I myself elso have never had any negative experience, and not even in Athens, but I know in Athens it's still another ballgame compared to the rest of Greece. I know many areas in Greece where all people say: I leave my door open. Nothing or noone comes inside the house
I don’t trust people that much but I am sure that in some places it’s fine. I wouldn’t leave my door open on a busy island in summer. Too many tourists
One important thing to note here. Robberies, thefts and most crime in Greece are very nearly always usually carried out by non Greeks. On the whole Greece continues to be extremely safe. The Police force could be better, but they do the best they can with the resources they are given. I have been over there 50 times and never a problem.
It's true. It's not racist but the reality. Immigrants mostly Pakistanis and Albanians significantly increased the rate. Of course there are Greeks but it's the minority. But mostly it's very safe.Just avoid the city center like the areas of Omonoia Square and some suburbs like (Menidi) and you are ok. Rest of the Greece it's very safe. So Athens holds the title in Greece but the rate is still lower than most European cities
Of course only foreigners commit crimes in Athens, what you guys mean is basically non white people, as many crimes are also committed by Greece’s Roma community, who are Greek citizens! ( as well as of course white Greek people - but then trafficking of East European women into prostitution is not the kind of crime you probably worry about)

I was in downtown Athens today getting off the metro in Plaka, so many tourist!!! I noticed a lot of Roma and they were doing the old “ here, take a flower as a gift trick” they pretend to give you a rose or a little trinket as a “gift” they especially hit up the tourists, then they ask for money! The poor tourist kept trying to give it back to her and she wouldn’t take it. Finally he aggressively gave the rose back to her and he walked away. Just be careful, nothing is given to you for free!!
that also happens in Fiji, people call out and ask your name - then they carve it on their little piece of wood and tell the person who gave their name they have to buy it. It has happened to entire families and the parents are expected to pay up.
This doesnt happen only to tourists-happens all the time to Greeks as well! Best way is to ingnore and tell them to leave you alone-if this happens in a restaurant ask for the manager-they are harmeless most of the times though
I have travelled a lot on greek ferries, in may I was traveling from Patmos to Kos. the suitcase as usual was left with the others. The crew moved the bags and I could not find mine - I always put a ribbon on so I know which is mine... .. I was ushered off the boat as they are super quick to move. Another person also had a missing case. The agent took details and the bag was on the ferry - a photo with ribbon was taken by crew. I had to pay 80 euro to get it back. Its really rare and not the end of the world.
Complete agreement on ATV’s on the roads here. (I’m in Alonissos right now.) I’d add the same for scooters and motorcycles if you don’t drive them regularly! Horrible things can happen. I don’t even rent a car but I do always get an International Driving Permit every year, just in case I change my mind. ($20 from AAA in the US.) It takes me ~30 hours before I land in Athens from the US, so I take a taxi if I’m going in. I’m too tired for anything else. I’m a big fan of the airport Sofitel for an overnight because you can walk there from baggage claim! $$ tho! The only problem I have in Greece is that despite being someone who walks a lot, I wind up with very sore knees for the first week or so. Like you said there aren’t hospitals on these little islands. So you do not want to fall on the endless stairs. Wear smart shoes! I recommend some arnica gel and Advil in your bag. I’ve never had trouble leaving my luggage in the ferry hull. It seems safer here than the US by far. But caution is always a good idea anywhere.
I have heard some terrible stories. Check out the Holiday Inn as it is cheaper and they have a free shuttle to the airport. Good shoes are a must here.
Fun fact;In many islands in Greece people are sleeping with open doors I wouldn’t do that in cities tho,but I would say Greece in general is pretty safe you always have to be careful and mind your things ofc in any place
Even in Athens, people do but most people live on higher floors so it isn't an issue. In the Spring, I slept with my balcony doors open but with the shutter rolled down. Felt perfectly safe!

My friend and I had an experience sitting outside a cafe in Syntagma Square. A woman came up and started speaking in a foreign tongue, rather it sounded like gibberish. She wanted us to give her money. As soon as she left which was a rather quick exit. She evidently was working with another person who stole my friends backpack. This was in daytime sitting in an outside restaurant! Just like you said, be vigilant!

These are some great tips for travelling in general. Athens is generally very safe but don't forget that it is a big city, with all the drawbacks this has. It has also received a great number of illegal immigrants the last few years, some of whom engage in criminal activities to get by. Some areas in the centre are dodgy, especially at night, and you'll see shady individuals going about, drug trafficking and fights. However, violent crime is low and generally the worst thing a person might encounter is pickpocketing, having a bag grabbed by a motorbike and house burglaries. Many areas may feel unsafe because they are unkempt, but they are not. As in every city, it's best to be aware of your surroundings and your belongings, don't flash lots of cash and expensive stuff, be careful when getting squeezed in the metro, and be aware of strangers trying to engage with you in touristy places. You are very right about driving atv's and motorbikes on the islands, every year some people get hurt and a few get airlifted. Even if you are careful, others may be (and will be) driving drunk out of their minds. Also if driving a car late at night near bars, beware of drunk pedestrians returning to their hotels. In some islands it seems the goal of many tourists is to get as hammered as possible during their stay. Also be careful when drinking and sunbathing/swimming, as you can get drunk more easily in the heat and it can be dangerous to swim in that state. Lastly, never head dive in waters you don't know! It might look good on Instagram but having an intact head is more important...
I loved your videos on things to do, not do and the TIPS!!! We will be visiting 11/2 - 12/9 and I hope that the weather stays wonderful for the entire vacay. My husband and I will be celebrating our 27th Wedding Anniversary and although we'll have 6 nights in Athens, our real get-a-way is in Mykonos. This island has been a topic of conversation for us and inspired purchases of Thomas McKnight Art for the last 28 years and we are finally making that "gotta visit" dream come true! As usual you are correct Tiffany especially for Omonoia square it has became a lair of all the immigrants especially the non legal ones from Pakistan Afghanistan. Usually pickpocketers are gangs of Roma or Romanians or even Bulgarians that act inside the metro trains or the usual train from Pireas to kifissia. I suggest not bringing high value items and especially jewels like necklaces or expensive watches and earrings. The only islands I hear that have cases of theft is Mykonos and Santorini islands but more Mykonos where foreign gangs seek out rich and even burglar apartments or villas and steal them. Many hotels have quite good safes in the reception just ask for a receipt in English what you have deposited in them. I have noticed that most tourists underestimate the climate and go hiking without a good amount of water with them to unknown trails even to the locals (at least 2 bottles of 1.5 litres per person) no hats for sun protection no sunglasses or cheap ones that DONT block UVA-B-C radiation and of course no skin protection sun creams or lotions. In result I see many nasty sunburns and people made like roasted lobsters. So it’s imperative they dress with light clothes with no dark colors as black grey blue. If they get lost it’s essential to have with them a fully charged smart phone with GPS feature and call, free of charge, 112 the European call line of emergencies to notify they have been lost and ask for help. At the same time I strongly suggest that they have activated the option of receiving emergency messages (Cell Broadcasting) especially from Civil Protection for fire or other hazardous phenomena. Just 2 days ago a huge warehouse with plastics caught fire (probably by a thunder, around 7500 thunder were recorded falling of with the rain) and a huge cloud of dangerous smoke was emitted from it. The agency suggested to a 20 km radius area for people to stay indoors and seal themselves to avoid inhaling those dangerous fumes.
@@beeyianong4230 Go to Glyfada, and Bari suburbs. They are more affluent and coastal. If you want to stay closer to the centre try Pagrati, or Agios Artemios areas. Affordable B&B accommodation and only a few kms from the Acropolis with very good transport like the trams and buses
Omonia sqr and monastiraki sqr are full of Pakistanis, afghans and algerians. Illegal immigrants. Just stay away from those and you'll be fine everywhere, even in Athens

My motto is don’t trust anyone wherever you may travel. Not only do I hide valuables when staying in hotels (including 5 star in London) I don’t even leave my perfume etc out. I’ve seen too many documentaries to know what sometimes happens when they service the rooms. ( I’ll spare you the story of toothbrushes :(
Ofcourse, don't trust anyone is a good motto and nothing wrong with. But I love Greek people and never ever had problems. It's not that I give them my diamonds or something and test if they steal me. But I have hundreds if not thousands of wonderful experiences with Greeks, some many times, and have not even a single thought of doubt of theft or anything. If anything, I get presents and food from them even when I haven't done anything. As the video implies aside of some small things you have to know regarding Athens, Greece is very safe. And this is from a woman who is situated in Athens as a base. Was she living in Epirus, or South Crete, or somewhere in Peloponnese, etc her opinion would only been even more firm of how safe Greece is

Truth about the subway. I got picked in 2018 BEFORE I even made it on to the subwaywhen a guy with a guitar case ran into me. Got my cell phone. Did you know there's actually a video on RUclips that shows you how to defeat the signin process fort some iPhones. 3 steps and you're in. No touch needed. Second time was the next day, again on the subway. Front pocket. Got a coin holder. I learned my lesson. Now--nothing in my pockets.
I don’t know if she lives in Athens or not but most of my friends returning from Athens have had their things stolen and have returned to Canada with the worst impression. All have come with one similar feeling at certain moments they felt terrified a filthy, drugs, fights, poverty, graphite all over, shouting, crime, garbage. I have arranged to see the Parthenon and move on to the islands I have been advised not much more to see and the museum doesn’t have much to see.
I do live in Athens. I have never had anything happen to me the whole time I have lived here. The museum amazing so you have heard wrong. Athens is a bit rough feeling but is safe. It is still a big city so you must use common sense.

You can also hail a taxi in the street or get one at a taxi rank, there is one in most busy areas and outside metro stations. Sometimes the taxis waiting in ranks in touristy or dodgy areas and in ports can be lousy, they can be dirty with a neanderthal driver, and a few of these may try to rip off tourists (fortunately this practice is declining rapidly). If you see a taxi that looks gross just wait for the next one. There are also many good taxi firms where you book through a call center (and some also have apps). These taxis can also be hailed in the street, so if you see stickers of a taxi firm on them, it means they are generally ok and safe.

just stick in your bag, they won't check. I bring my painmeds every time. I asked my doc for a little paper that says I need this, so maybe that's a thing to do. Meds are also really cheap in every pharmacy in Greece

Depents ,if you planing to go around in the metropolitan area,metro ,tram or puplic buses are fine, puplic transportation is cheap and efective ,but if you want go on small excursions in attica region,like cape sounion,or to the beach or a trip to delphi or nafplion, then you might need a rental,have in mind that Athens is big and trafic is, most of the time ,bad
Agree with previous comment. If you are staying only in Athens, no car needed. On the islands, car is more useful. Especially on bigger islands (Crete, Rhodes), a car gives you a lot of freedom. Be warned though, driving in Greece can be intense haha
If you are planning to spend your time in the touristy area of Athens (Acropolis, Plaka, Syntagma, Lykabettus Hill etc) you will not find having a car useful. But Athens is much more than that. Paros also requires a car because it is big enough to drive around. You will love Greece.

Hello, first of all I hope you have a great time here! Your hotel is extremely close to Metaxourgeio station. It's a safe neighborhood, there are a lot of cafes and bars and it attracts young locals. The taxi is comfortable but if you arrive late (after 00.00) you have to pay a higher rate. But then again the metro is closed after 00.30 I think or 01.00 you might have to check on that. If you arrive before 00.00 then I'd suggest to take the metro, public transportation in Greece is super cheap, easy to understand and quick. Also the station is so close to your hotel so you won't have to walk around a lot
Yes those happen from time to time and these were large but I think this will be calm by then. If you encounter a protest you turn around or away from it.
They are Roma, gypsies. In all honesty, they do that as a job. They usually turn down the chance to educate their kids and then inevitably kids end up asking for money or worse, getting involved in criminal activities. It's a sensitive issue in Greece and Balkans, because we respect their individuality but they have a huge problem in assimilating- which I get- but studying and working should be a priority instead of choosing a life as an outcast.

Hello, Athens isn’t particularly dangerous. Around Omonia is probably the worst ghetto in Greece. Even in Omonia if you mind your own business most likely no one will bother you. Crime statistics point toward the fact that it’s actually quite a safe city for travelers-Athens is not included on lengthy lists of the world’s most dangerous cities, and a 2020 crime index from Numbeo put the Greek capital at number 140 on the list, rating it safer than cities such as Tampa, Florida, San Francisco CA, Miami FL , Orlando FL, Philadelphia PA, Washington DC, London UK Manchester UK, Paris France , Brussels Belgium, Rome Italy, Naples Italy and Dublin Ireland. Heavy crimes like murder, rape etc. its pretty low, probably Athens in that aspect is one of the safest cities in the world. I loved living in Greece in day time it very safe, but I lived in very luxury area called Kifisa, you have places like Marsoui, up there halandri, the mall, ekali, Kat, I always chill around those places.. Athens is to much sometimes, loads of people, Islands is so relaxing, less danger, the only thing that happened I found funny though this gypsy dude on the Island of Andros in town of Chora offered me a foot massage.. I accepted his offer he kept smelling my feet less massaging.. lol I think he tricked me so he could have his way with my big Smelly feet.. I even saw him doing to another guy at one of the cafes... lol he was smelling and pulling faces,, seems he enyoys smelling mens stinky feet

I’ve never had trouble leaving my luggage in the ferry hull. It seems safer here than the US by far. But caution is always a good idea anywhere.

Even in Athens, people do but most people live on higher floors so it isn't an issue. In the Spring, I slept with my balcony doors open but with the shutter rolled down. Felt perfectly safe!

My friend and I had an experience sitting outside a cafe in Syntagma Square. A woman came up and started speaking in a foreign tongue, rather it sounded like gibberish. She wanted us to give her money. As soon as she left which was a rather quick exit. She evidently was working with another person who stole my friends backpack. This was in daytime sitting in an outside restaurant! Just like you said, be vigilant!
I think they do that so you are distracted trying to figure out what they are saying. Sorry that happened!

A good tip for avoiding rough areas, not just in Athens but pretty much in every city, is to look for the highest concentrations of Western Union offices. If you check Athens, you'll notice that it's Omonoia square.

These are some great tips for travelling in general. Athens is generally very safe but don't forget that it is a big city, with all the drawbacks this has. It has also received a great number of illegal immigrants the last few years, some of whom engage in criminal activities to get by. Some areas in the centre are dodgy, especially at night, and you'll see shady individuals going about, drug trafficking and fights. However, violent crime is low and generally the worst thing a person might encounter is pickpocketing, having a bag grabbed by a motorbike and house burglaries. Many areas may feel unsafe because they are unkempt, but they are not. As in every city, it's best to be aware of your surroundings and your belongings, don't flash lots of cash and expensive stuff, be careful when getting squeezed in the metro, and be aware of strangers trying to engage with you in touristy places.
You are very right about driving atv's and motorbikes on the islands, every year some people get hurt and a few get airlifted. Even if you are careful, others may be (and will be) driving drunk out of their minds. Also if driving a car late at night near bars, beware of drunk pedestrians returning to their hotels. In some islands it seems the goal of many tourists is to get as hammered as possible during their stay.
Also be careful when drinking and sunbathing/swimming, as you can get drunk more easily in the heat and it can be dangerous to swim in that state. Lastly, never head dive in waters you don't know! It might look good on Instagram but having an intact head is more important...

My husband and I will be celebrating our 27th Wedding Anniversary and although we'll have 6 nights in Athens, our real get-a-way is in Mykonos. They hit especially,when they see someone alone,a student from the provinces,or a tourist..they will pretend to ask you for information,or they will beg for money, mostly ROMA..

As usual you are correct Tiffany especially for Omonoia square it has became a lair of all the immigrants especially the non legal ones from Pakistan Afghanistan. Usually pickpocketers are gangs of Roma or Romanians or even Bulgarians that act inside the metro trains or the usual train from Pireas to kifissia. I suggest not bringing high value items and especially jewels like necklaces or expensive watches and earrings. The only islands I hear that have cases of theft is Mykonos and Santorini islands but more Mykonos where foreign gangs seek out rich and even burglar apartments or villas and steal them. Many hotels have quite good safes in the reception just ask for a receipt in English what you have deposited in them. I have noticed that most tourists underestimate the climate and go hiking without a good amount of water with them to unknown trails even to the locals (at least 2 bottles of 1.5 litres per person) no hats for sun protection no sunglasses or cheap ones that DONT block UVA-B-C radiation and of course no skin protection sun creams or lotions. In result I see many nasty sunburns and people made like roasted lobsters. So it’s imperative they dress with light clothes with no dark colors as black grey blue. If they get lost it’s essential to have with them a fully charged smart phone with GPS feature and call, free of charge, 112 the European call line of emergencies to notify they have been lost and ask for help. At the same time I strongly suggest that they have activated the option of receiving emergency messages (Cell Broadcasting) especially from Civil Protection for fire or other hazardous phenomena. Just 2 days ago a huge warehouse with plastics caught fire (probably by a thunder, around 7500 thunder were recorded falling of with the rain) and a huge cloud of dangerous smoke was emitted from it. The agency suggested to a 20 km radius area for people to stay indoors and seal themselves to avoid inhaling those dangerous fumes.
It is definitely hotter here than people realize. Some people seem to burn on purpose.

@@beeyianong4230 Go to Glyfada, and Bari suburbs. They are more affluent and coastal. If you want to stay closer to the centre try Pagrati, or Agios Artemios areas. Affordable B&B accommodation and only a few kms from the Acropolis with very good transport like the trams and buses

Ofcourse, don't trust anyone is a good motto and nothing wrong with. But I love Greek people and never ever had problems. It's not that I give them my diamonds or something and test if they steal me. But I have hundreds if not thousands of wonderful experiences with Greeks, some many times, and have not even a single thought of doubt of theft or anything. If anything, I get presents and food from them even when I haven't done anything.
As the video implies aside of some small things you have to know regarding Athens, Greece is very safe. And this is from a woman who is situated in Athens as a base. Was she living in Epirus, or South Crete, or somewhere in Peloponnese, etc her opinion would only been even more firm of how safe Greece is

Truth about the subway. I got picked in 2018 BEFORE I even made it on to the subwaywhen a guy with a guitar case ran into me. Got my cell phone. Did you know there's actually a video on RUclips that shows you how to defeat the signin process fort some iPhones. 3 steps and you're in. No touch needed. Second time was the next day, again on the subway. Front pocket. Got a coin holder. I learned my lesson. Now--nothing in my pockets.

I don’t know if she lives in Athens or not but most of my friends returning from Athens have had their things stolen and have returned to Canada with the worst impression. All have come with one similar feeling at certain moments they felt terrified a filthy, drugs, fights, poverty, graphite all over, shouting, crime, garbage. I have arranged to see the Parthenon and move on to the islands I have been advised not much more to see and the museum doesn’t have much to see.
I do live in Athens. I have never had anything happen to me the whole time I have lived here. The museum amazing so you have heard wrong. Athens is a bit rough feeling but is safe. It is still a big city so you must use common sense.

It’s not advisable. The roads on some islands are not well maintained and injuries happen every year and some are serious.

It depends on the service. If they don't ask for it at the reservation time they may ask when you pick it up.
How do you get a taxi ? Is that better than the bus ? Is Uber available ?
You can use Uber to call a taxi. There is also a local app called Beat that also calls a taxi. The bus is fine as is the metro.
You can also hail a taxi in the street or get one at a taxi rank, there is one in most busy areas and outside metro stations. Sometimes the taxis waiting in ranks in touristy or dodgy areas and in ports can be lousy, they can be dirty with a neanderthal driver, and a few of these may try to rip off tourists (fortunately this practice is declining rapidly). If you see a taxi that looks gross just wait for the next one. There are also many good taxi firms where you book through a call center (and some also have apps). These taxis can also be hailed in the street, so if you see stickers of a taxi firm on them, it means they are generally ok and safe.

just stick in your bag, they won't check. I bring my painmeds every time. I asked my doc for a little paper that says I need this, so maybe that's a thing to do. Meds are also really cheap in every pharmacy in Greece

Agree with previous comment. If you are staying only in Athens, no car needed. On the islands, car is more useful. Especially on bigger islands (Crete, Rhodes), a car gives you a lot of freedom. Be warned though, driving in Greece can be intense haha

If you are planning to spend your time in the touristy area of Athens (Acropolis, Plaka, Syntagma, Lykabettus Hill etc) you will not find having a car useful. But Athens is much more than that. Paros also requires a car because it is big enough to drive around. You will love Greece.

Your hotel is extremely close to Metaxourgeio station. It's a safe neighborhood, there are a lot of cafes and bars and it attracts young locals. The taxi is comfortable but if you arrive late (after 00.00) you have to pay a higher rate. But then again the metro is closed after 00.30 I think or 01.00 you might have to check on that. If you arrive before 00.00 then I'd suggest to take the metro, public transportation in Greece is super cheap, easy to understand and quick. Also the station is so close to your hotel so you won't have to walk around a lot
I would get a taxi. The area is better than Omonia but close enough by so you will feel more safe.
ask for a room as high up as you can. This hotel is right on the roundabout on a 24-7 busy street. Subway in front of the lobby.

I had my phone stolen in Athens, and the tourist police were horrible, but otherwise I felt safe 24/7.
We were on Santorini in early May and noticed several beggar women sitting along the walkways. Are they really needy? Curious about that.

They are Roma, gypsies. In all honesty, they do that as a job. They usually turn down the chance to educate their kids and then inevitably kids end up asking for money or worse, getting involved in criminal activities. It's a sensitive issue in Greece and Balkans, because we respect their individuality but they have a huge problem in assimilating- which I get- but studying and working should be a priority instead of choosing a life as an outcast.

Hello, Athens isn’t particularly dangerous. Around Omonia is probably the worst ghetto in Greece. Even in Omonia if you mind your own business most likely no one will bother you.
Crime statistics point toward the fact that it’s actually quite a safe city for travelers-Athens is not included on lengthy lists of the world’s most dangerous cities, and a 2020 crime index from Numbeo put the Greek capital at number 140 on the list, rating it safer than cities such as Tampa, Florida, San Francisco CA, Miami FL , Orlando FL, Philadelphia PA, Washington DC, London UK Manchester UK, Paris France , Brussels Belgium, Rome Italy, Naples Italy and Dublin Ireland.
Heavy crimes like murder, rape etc. its pretty low, probably Athens in that aspect is one of the safest cities in the world.

Athens is to much sometimes, loads of people, Islands is so relaxing, less danger, the only thing that happened I found funny though this gypsy dude on the Island of Andros in town of Chora offered me a foot massage.. I accepted his offer he kept smelling my feet less massaging.. lol I think he tricked me so he could have his way with my big Smelly feet.. I even saw him doing to another guy at one of the cafes... lol he was smelling and pulling faces,, seems he enyoys smelling mens stinky feet
