Hey Jarrod! I think I heard you say in another video that you don't like to drag all those "balls" down in MSI Afterburner. If this is still true, have I got the trick for you! Basically, this trick, that I learned this via another RUclips channel, eliminates the need to manually drag all those "balls" down, one by one. All you have to do is move the first ball to your target position (1500MHz@0.700V for me) then hold the SHIFT key down while dragging your mouse across the entire window (from just before the first ball, to just after the last ball) and then while all balls are highlighed, simply hold SHIFT down again while hitting ENTER twice, and voila! All balls are moved to the same position that the first one was set at! Took all of 10 seconds for me to set my UV/OC settings. (If only I learned about this trick BEFORE dragging them all manually!) This also works for just the balls you select (i.e. you don't have to select them all, and can keep whatever curves you want in place, just to the left of the flat line that you are working to create). Hope this helps, and happy computing!

Later started crashing and restarting even with high performance mode eventually fixed it with temperature ranging between 72-78 C with one inch raised laptop from the back, so as I am living in India with avg temperature most of the time above 30 C, it's better to have a cooling pad.

Great review Jarrod, love the detail! Just ordered this exact model from Dell. Did you ever replace the thermal paste? Did it make any difference? Anyone else ever replaced thermal paste on their gaming laptops and see any performance increase?
I am in need of a gaming laptop for 3D development and let me tell you, these days I am watching your reviews while eating pop corn. They are amazing and very thorough. Thank you so much!
Eluktronics said they're going to send you RP-15 to review. Did you get it yet? Are you reviewing it? notebookcheck crapped out on RP-15's power consumption review, same as they did for G14. I'm hoping for you to do it some justice. Absolutely love your reviews. Keep them coming ❤
Thanks a lot for your detailed reviews and for answering my questions on twitter. It really helped me to buy the best laptop. I was confused between Dell G5 and Acer Nitro 5 2020. Thermals and poor build quality really raise questions for the long term durability of G5.
I edited the registry and added the Processor Power Management option to the Power Plan. I tested with GTA5, that was constantly running on 100-103 Celsius. After I disabled Turbo Boost completely, temperature decreased to 95-100 Celsius. I tried playing around, and the best performance-heat combo for me is the "Efficient Aggressive At Guaranteed". This way it runs on 85 Celsius, and no lags, or game quality drop whatsoever. Let me know if this worked for you too.
Thanks Jarrod for the Most detailed Thermal Testing Analysis on YT. These surely help us in making better laptop buying decisions. Awaiting your Full review. This surely runs hot +100 °C 🔥. Can you review Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 ? I really liked the way you tested G5's thermals. & Given G15's known thermal issues, I would definitely like to see your hands on G15, for such extensive Thermal Testing & what can be done to improve it. Also, comparison with G14 is another hot topic for your followers.
Are you experimenting new upload time? I was surprised to discover a new video from you so earlier in the morning (on my side of the world), you generally upload them in the early evening (on my side of the world) like Hardware Unboxed :) That computer is definetly on the hot side :O
I bought one of these, the exact same model too. I haven't repasted yet, and was surprised by how hot it ran when I stress tested it with folding@home. What surprised me was after a couple days (off and on), the temperatures came down a bit, but my folding@home numbers stayed pretty similar. Playing with it a little bit, propping up the back (without blocking the vents) a little seemed to help too. It's probably paste+air pressure at the intake, after whatever caused the initial dip that I still can't explain.

Hi! I appreciate your content and I was about to buy this laptop but I’m curious to see a comparison between this G5 15 SE and the G5 15 5501 with i7-10750H and RTX 2070 MQ, could you make a video of this two laptop?it’d very useful because they are basically the same laptop but one with intel&nvidia and the other one with AMD... thank you!
Not sure if I will get the 10th gen model, depends if they want to lend me it - I definitely do not plan on spending my own money on 2070 in Australia as it will be a waste of money.
As expected the G5 itself is pretty much a hot laptop. Seeing how the design of the air vents on other reviews, I now see that it does effect thermals in the long run. Intel versions might be just as hot unless there is a different design elements on that, though it is highly unlikely seeing my Dell 7567 also retains the same designed thermal vents. Still, it is not bad for what it's worth, just maybe better thermals design on next year's model, Dell?
Awesome video as always, this might be out of topic. But whats the cheapest way to buy laptop in australia? was planning to buy msi gs66/m15 but its more expensive in australia store compared to buying from amazon america and ship it, correct me if im wrong though. Thanks
Just wondering, when you removed the back cover, did you cover the gap between the fan and the heat sink (this can be done with tape). This may explain the higher temps with the back cover removed.
@@JarrodsTech So I guess, with the Dell laptop, the bottom cover does not perform this function? I think the bottom cover of the Asus A15 does cover the gap between the fan and the heat sink.
thanks for the video! looking at buying this laptop too, any chance you could see if replacing the thermal paste with thermal grizzly kryonaut or liquid metal if you are up for it? Could be they are using cheap thermal paste and the heat issues might go away
Laptops are becoming more powerful but the cooling is staying the same. My 500$ office laptop 2019 Acer aspire slim 5 has one coper heatsink. If I start any casual gaming laptop running louder and hot some of keys are becoming hard to press. Cooling must be improved.
Im loving you analysis on the new G5 SE and TuF A15, im thinking about buying one of the two but im still not sure which one specially cause i want one for like 4 year +-
Frederico Santos that’s a pretty hard sell. As both are having thermal issues. I have this laptop and it seems thermals across all laptops have thermal issues and I bought the extended warranty. Seems technology will only last until the the warranty period.
Hey Jarrod can you do a performance benchmark when using external monitors? I'm split between buying the G5 and A15. The G5, while it is great, it seems underwhelming compared to other laptops. But, it has a mini displayport which not all laptops, especially the A15, have. The A15 would've been ideal and perfect for me but I contacted ASUS and they told me the Type-C DisplayPort is connected to the iGPU rather than the DGPU. So if I was to connect to the Type-C DP will there be any performance drop off on the A15? Please I've been looking for answers no one really talks about this
Going forward I always mention what all the ports are connected to in the full review, I haven't tested the A15 yet, but with G5 can confirm Type-C goes to Vega, but MiniDP/HDMI go to Radeon.
"The A15 would've been ideal and perfect for me but I contacted ASUS and they told me the Type-C DisplayPort is connected to the iGPU rather than the DGPU." VERY interesting that you got this answer from ASUS, because I'd beg to differ. I'm on my A15 right now, and have my ASUS VG279QM connected to it via a standard USB-C to DP cable, and wherein while using it this way I don't see ANY activity, at all, on the Vega graphics processor, when viewing it in either the Task Manager or HWInfo64. So everything most certainly appears to be going directly through the 2060, as far as I can tell at least. Moreover, I specifically got this laptop because I wanted to utilize G-Sync for my monitor, and to which has worked PERFECTLY for me, since day one. In the end (and contrary to the previous commenter's point) I must inform you that I am 100% satisfied with my A15 purchase, and haven't looked back since. Thermals have also been acceptable, and even better once I disabled turbo-boost via the registry trick while simultaneously undervolting and overclocking the GPU via MSI Afterburner (I have it set across the board at 1500MHz@0.700V). Oh, and I should note here that after performing such mods, I have seen minimal loss (0-10%) in my average FPS for games, while dropping anywhere between 10C and 15C in temps on both my CPU and GPU! Quite a disappointment that the base-clock-lock trick didn't help the G5 so much, however. Likely that "smart shift" feature, I bet, as I have DEFINITELY had a far different (better) experience with the trick when performing it on the 4800H coupled with the 2060. SIDE NOTE: There is also a third-party program called "Ryzen Controller" that I recently found, which is almost as good as Ryzen Master, but works for mobile chips, and to which using has allowed me to play with my chip's TDP values rather than simply disable turbo boost. This has allowed me to more granularly dial in my temps and thus maximize my FPS even more! It just requires a little more work (trial and error) to find the ideal TDP value per game, than how much work the quick-and-dirty set-it-and-forget-it turbo-boost-disabling mod requires. Just try both and see what you prefer! But regardless, it must be noted here that undervolting/overclocking the GPU is where the real savings are at, for without doing that I didn't see nearly as much of a difference in temps on the CPU side with either CPU mod just mentioned (since the CPU and GPU share heat pipes, remember). Hope this helps, and happy computing! UPDATE: I totally forgot that the NVIDIA Control Panel tells you which monitor is connected to which port, and which port is connected to which GPU, via its PhysX tab. Alas, I can tell you with absolute specificity that my VG279QM is connected directly to my 2060 via the USB-C DP port. Moreover, when I connect it to my A15 via the HDMI port, the PhysX tab shows that it is connected to the Vega GPU! (And as a side note, only then do I begin seeing activity -- in the Task Manager and HWInfo64 -- on both my GPUs.) Now the 2060 is definitely still doing most of the work (as I run my GPU-Z stress test here) so I know that it's fortunately still being utilized. But it does appear now that the Vega -- since it's doing **some** work (about 10% utilization) -- is likely receiving the "finished product" from the 2060 that is essentially being "relayed" to it internally. So yes, if you're running >>HDMI
Hey Jarrod great review appreciate it! I recently purchased one and i'm unsure if I should go for a cooling pad or just a stand? What are your thoughts as it seems stands seem todo the job.
Dell gave the unit inadequate cooling. It's pretty clear that high temperatures are choking both the cpu and gpu. Also for people claiming that 100 degrees Celsius is something the cpu can work with... Not really, because performance drops quite a bit at such high temperature which also diminishes the hw lifespan (not to mention the lifespan of other components in the system - especially laptop chassis). When Dell replaces the 60hz screen with 120hz version this summer, they should also replace the cooling assembly with a more powerful one capable of keeping both the cpu and gpu at 75-80 degrees Celsius when both are fully stressed at the same time (and achieve/sustain their Maximum advertised clocks). You can clearly see the cooling assembly is weak. Only 2 shared heat pipes for both the cpu and gpu ... That's inadequate. Both 4800h and 5600m are more than viable options and powerful ones for gaming and productivity. Heck, Dell could probably adjust the voltages on both the cpu and gpu to drop temperatures drastically (or give users the ability to do that). They still need to beef up the cooling assembly. It's too weak
Hello. Congratulations on your videos. They're great. I currently have a 504 asus tuf and it's dying. And the asus service sucks. I was thinking of buying me a new laptop in this price range. Do you consider this Dell G5 GE to be the best option? I don't wish to scare anymore.
I think these reviews need to take into account the silicon is spec'd to be able to run at that temp. If the device isn't so hot it's physically unusable, what difference does it make?

Seeing this review, which is really well done btw, I have to ask. With ryzen 7 4800h coming to a lot of different laptops, is buying a all amd laptop worth it this year? Cause I'm seeing amazing performance apart from the thermals which is subjective.
Like Age said pretty subjective...general use (and gaming) does not require nearly the cpu power the 4800H dishes out. However for someone like myself who also needs it to run multiple VMs the CPU is important, so I am truly torn on a purchase option...starting to look like I may just go for the ROG G15
The previous G5 was also really hot. In my opinion Dell must rework the building and thermal desing of this laptop line. Other laptop with the same processor are much cooler.

Hey Jarrod, I'm looking for a laptop that is well at multitasking (school work, streaming, video editing, a bit of gaming). My budget is $2,000 and I'm looking for something that the fans won't blow like crazy or get crazy hot. Any recommendations?
Not sure why Dell didn't opt to use the Ryzen 5 4600HS and Ryzen 7 4800HS chips since they have a lower TDP number of 35W instead of the H series which uses 45W.
So far the rp15/17 or xmg core 15/17 seem like the best option, both Bob of all Trades and notebookcheck reviews show outstanding results. Shame on the OEMs for not putting this CPU with cooling solutions and higher end GPUs like they do with Intel ones.
Good review. What were you using to read the CPU temp? Lot's of the reviewers were reading the Socket temp as the CPU temp. The Socket temp will be the highest reported Temp sensor and the actual CPU temp will be 10-20c less. I've seen 2 reviews so far with max temps from 85-87c. The hothardware review showed a picture of the "CPU" temp being 105c. And the SOCket temp being 85c. He had the sensors backward. CPU is never hotter than SOCket.
I dont know why OEM does not put lot of efford on AMD machine. Its like, the cpu & gpu is good, but the rest of the laptop is just okay. Not that good cooling, poor display, etc.

Thanks! Not sure as there still a lot more to test, but so far it's looking like it.
Ryzen cpu is running under lower power than intel, the cooling in so many brand was intenly bad for intel market
I'd like a comparison since I've had an A15 for a few weeks and I've been on Team Red since the FX-8000 cpus got released. I was hype and dissapointed, but I couldn't afford Intel products at the time. Now I'm just stubborn since I'm financially stable and more proficient in upgrading computers.
Thanks again for the video.
Dude just saying i love how you cover laptops at these price points. You don't know how much of are looking at gaming laptops at these budget prices. It means a lot to us.
That's good to hear, it was hard to get this!
Great review Jarrod, love the detail! Just ordered this exact model from Dell. Did you ever replace the thermal paste? Did it make any difference? Anyone else ever replaced thermal paste on their gaming laptops and see any performance increase?
According to AMD's site it can handle a max of 105 C so even though it's running quite hot it seems it may still be technically "safe"
I’m new and have watched a few of your videos now & I will be making my next purchase based on your reviews.
They said they'll send it after Notebookcheck are done, I see they posted their review already so not sure, still waiting for it to arrive. Thanks!
love to see the RP-17 review even more. Thicker than RP-15 for better thermals hopefully to cool that 2060 boosted to 110 watts!
Thanks a lot for your detailed reviews and for answering my questions on twitter. It really helped me to buy the best laptop. I was confused between Dell G5 and Acer Nitro 5 2020. Thermals and poor build quality really raise questions for the long term durability of G5.
whch did you go for then ?
I got this laptop and I cousins been anymore happier with it
I edited the registry and added the Processor Power Management option to the Power Plan.
Thanks, I'm still waiting for availability on that model in my country
Do a Lenovo legion 5 next!
Are you experimenting new upload time? I was surprised to discover a new video from you so earlier in the morning (on my side of the world), you generally upload them in the early evening (on my side of the world) like Hardware Unboxed :)
That computer is definetly on the hot side :O
No, it was a mistake, I set it to am instead of pm 😥
Can't wait for Lenovo Legion 5 review
Me too!
Why would you want a legion 5 which has a 1650ti gpu and 200$ more expansive. The radeon 5600m is between 2060mq 2070mq
@@mahakalamahamudra1718 exactly. Both 5 and 5i are terrible for the price. Lenovo isn't a choice this year for sure. Acer is our only hope
Will you use liquid metall? Can you make a video of repasting?
@@Flatsteff - I didn't do a video, because I don't have a channel, good equipment, and I wanted to take my time. No liquid metal either because I'm a slob.
I threw some Kyronaut on the GPU and CPU though. It's life changing. Seriously. Slammed the CPU, and I could immediately tell the difference. Cinebench stayed under 80 degrees with fans still low.
Subbed ! ❣
Looking forward to seeing the lower version
Hey Jarrod I heard the thermals in the lenovo legion 5 4800h are really good, do you think you could get your hands on it and check. Cheers
Still waiting on availability in my country.
@@JarrodsTech Also only has 1650 though, so quite a step down. It'd have to be really messed up to have worse thermals.
@@JarrodsTech 4800H and 1660ti is available now in aussie, hope you've ordered it. looks like a catch. only dissapointed so far the 60wh model has poor battery performance.
Hey Jarrod, love your content, definitely underrated. I'm thinking of buying a Samsung Odyssey with RTX 2060, however I haven't found a thermal review like yours. Is it asking too much for you to do a review on it? Keep up the good work!
i repasted this machine with noctua NT-H2 and it only exceeds 95C in synthetic stress tests
Thanks. I was so tempted to get this at AUD2200
Just got my copy today! So far I'm fairly satisfied with the performance but the one thing that annoys me is the temperatures. Hopefully it won't affect the laptop much in the long run
So how is it going now? I'm gonna purchase this coz I want performance. Are high temperatures troubling you a lots ?
@@anujjagtap1604 its doing ok certainly not terrible. The heating issues aren't bad once you purchase a cooling pad so it should last me another few months if not a year. Though I highly recommend you get a Legion 5 or an Omen if you want better performance
@@Lwaku_ how's it going now please reply
@@justsomeguywithouthair7528 it's kinda shit for gaming, but it's survived so far.Probably gonna replace this thing by the end of next year
I was deciding whether to get this or the Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3. I chose this since I hadn't seen any reviews for the Ideapad. I really hope I made the right decision 😬
Goodthing that Ive decided to purchased helios 300 with i5 9300h / rtx 2060 variant rather than g5 se. I was once thinking to buy this tho 🙂
Should do better in games, 2060 beats 5600M, though for CPU performance Ryzen 4000 will smash the i5.

Hey man great video,do you have any plans of doing eluktronics rp-15?
They told me they will send it over after notebookcheck are done with it.
Please compare the two laptops fully. Thanks!
Ok!
Jarrod'sTech thank u
As expected the G5 itself is pretty much a hot laptop. Seeing how the design of the air vents on other reviews, I now see that it does effect thermals in the long run. Intel versions might be just as hot unless there is a different design elements on that, though it is highly unlikely seeing my Dell 7567 also retains the same designed thermal vents. Still, it is not bad for what it's worth, just maybe better thermals design on next year's model, Dell?
Itching to buy a new laptop - was hoping this would be the one. Now waiting for reviews of the new HP Omen 15
Awesome video as always, this might be out of topic. But whats the cheapest way to buy laptop in australia? was planning to buy msi gs66/m15 but its more expensive in australia store compared to buying from amazon america and ship it, correct me if im wrong though. Thanks
Hey Jarrod, I would love to see a video review on the acer ConceptD 3 pro or 5 and up as a graphic design and other creative professional use
My 2012 laptop runs 90-103 celcius while watching twitch. I really need to get a new laptop lol. Why i'm here.
This laptop just like your old laptop, try Acer Nitro 5 2020, it's pretty cool laptop
Just wondering, when you removed the back cover, did you cover the gap between the fan and the heat sink (this can be done with tape). This may explain the higher temps with the back cover removed.
No, I considered it but didn't bother, if they want to design it like that then that's how I'm trying it.
@@JarrodsTech So I guess, with the Dell laptop, the bottom cover does not perform this function? I think the bottom cover of the Asus A15 does cover the gap between the fan and the heat sink.
Which is better for gaming among these 3?
Helios 300 (i5-9300h/ rtx 2060)
Dell g5 SE
Asus A15 (r7-4800h / rtx 2060)
thanks for the video! looking at buying this laptop too, any chance you could see if replacing the thermal paste with thermal grizzly kryonaut or liquid metal if you are up for it? Could be they are using cheap thermal paste and the heat issues might go away
Laptops are becoming more powerful but the cooling is staying the same. My 500$ office laptop 2019 Acer aspire slim 5 has one coper heatsink. If I start any casual gaming laptop running louder and hot some of keys are becoming hard to press. Cooling must be improved.
Hope u Review the new Eluktronics MAX-17 laptop :(
Im loving you analysis on the new G5 SE and TuF A15, im thinking about buying one of the two but im still not sure which one specially cause i want one for like 4 year +-
Frederico Santos that’s a pretty hard sell. As both are having thermal issues. I have this laptop and it seems thermals across all laptops have thermal issues and I bought the extended warranty. Seems technology will only last until the the warranty period.
Hey J. What would you consider optimal temparature for Cpu and gpu for say, 4-5 years? Btw great content!
Thanks, personally I'm just fine running around 90 under heavy load
"The A15 would've been ideal and perfect for me but I contacted ASUS and they told me the Type-C DisplayPort is connected to the iGPU rather than the DGPU."
VERY interesting that you got this answer from ASUS, because I'd beg to differ.
@@zoinbergs sorry for the late reply but thank you very much! Was stressing over this a lot but you really put my mind at ease. Thank you!
Jarrod you should do video now post the bios update, it's insane!!!
Hey Jarrod great review appreciate it! I recently purchased one and i'm unsure if I should go for a cooling pad or just a stand? What are your thoughts as it seems stands seem todo the job.
Yes yes please want to see comparison and specially opened back with both laptops pleaaassseeeeee
Ok!
I can't really answer as there are still a lot of others I need to test around this price point, sorry.
I think these reviews need to take into account the silicon is spec'd to be able to run at that temp. If the device isn't so hot it's physically unusable, what difference does it make?
After seeing all AMD configuration on this device, i was thinking ,
"Is it suitable for booting Hackintosh ?"

Jarrod, may I ask something. From all your previous reviews, I'm just wondering if they were running on single channel configuration only during the test. I'm baffled that my laptop's benchmarks is different than the majority presented it.

Did you use tape to guide the flow of air from the fan to the radiator fins like Tim from HUB did on the Asus Tuf test?
Does this mark the start of a new upload schedule, or just a one-off?
I've never seen an upload at this time before.
I accidentally set the schedule to am instead of pm, it's 12 hours early.
I found the g5 se cheap one but with a 144hz but I couldn’t find one like it in dells website, is this ok or something wrong?
Hi Jarrod, how do you think to add the ability to do undervolting on AMD Ryzen 4000 processors?
Not sure why Dell didn't opt to use the Ryzen 5 4600HS and Ryzen 7 4800HS chips since they have a lower TDP number of 35W instead of the H series which uses 45W.
So far the rp15/17 or xmg core 15/17 seem like the best option, both Bob of all Trades and notebookcheck reviews show outstanding results. Shame on the OEMs for not putting this CPU with cooling solutions and higher end GPUs like they do with Intel ones.

The Socket temp will be the highest reported Temp sensor and the actual CPU temp will be 10-20c less.
