The episode is about the main theme of The Last of Us. Surviving vs Living.
Bill taught Frank how to survive, and Frank taught Bill how to live.
That argument in the street is where the game Bill and the show Bill's timeline diverge. In the game Bill says absolutely not, Frank starts resenting him because he’s an extrovert. Eventually Frank leaves, gets bitten, hangs himself to not turn. And leaves an angry letter to Bill, to which Bill swallows his tears and feelings and goes, “Well then fuck you too”. Bill will die bitter and angry having never lived at all.
In the show Bill compromised a bit, and let Frank love him how he wanted to love him. Let him make a friend, Tess and Joel. Spruce up the neighborhood. Frank in turn compromised and settled for just that. It’s still an apocalypse, he can’t invite too many people or do too much. So they both died satisfied, in each other’s arms, after a full life.
In either case their plot purpose is to teach Joel that surviving isn’t enough. In the game Bill shows Joel how bad and purposeless his life can be if he doesn’t open up. In the show Bill shows Joel how good it can be if he opens up.
Bill lets the "danger" song play so that Joel and Tess would come, and get all the weapons and things they needed to have a happy ending like he did. If you read the rest of the letter Bill tells Joel which wine to use in order for Joel to woo Tess and start doing more than just surviving. But it's too late for Tess. Joel reads the letter and realizes that Frank died happy. And Tess died never having that chance. He looks at the key in his hand, and he could part ways with Ellie, but now Tess told him to save who he could save. Bill told him to protect others are what they're for. And he decides to open up a bit, the first time since the time stuck on his broken watch.
Both Bill and Franks from the game and show are sides of the same coin. The bad ending. And the good ending.

As a massive fan of both games, I absolutely loved this episode - what I could see through the constant veil of tears that is. I honestly think it's one of my favourite episodes of television I've ever seen, up there with The Body and Once More With Feeling.
It's drastically different to the game in terms of the moment-to-moment (for example, we never meet a living Frank and Bill is still alive when Joel and Ellie leave in the truck), but for a TV show, this story works so much better, and I'm so glad this version of Bill and Frank were able to live a long and mostly happy life together, as opposed to the game. Importantly though, the theme of love is consistent, albeit in a mirrored way: Bill in the games was bitter and cynical to the end, and he drove Frank away; Bill in the show learned to open his heart and embrace love, and hold onto what really matters. Ultimately, the end result is the same: their story is a lesson for Joel.
I can't wait to be wrecked next week by whatever they throw our way 💜

Stones stacked on top of each other are an archaic form of signposts, but are still erected worldwide today. The marking is intended to facilitate orientation, especially in impassable and unclear terrain - such as mountains, high mountains, steppes and deserts. Cairns are common in all populated areas of the world.
The funny thing is in Texas, stacking stones on top of each other is prohibited by law.
The parallel to the infected is Frank here in this episode. The head is clear, but his Multiple Sclerosis or ALS (probably) has control over his body. Yes, the infected are aware of their actions, at least in the first stage. In the game, they even cry. They also cry while they are eating someone.
And through this episode we also know that Tess and Joel have known each other for more than 13 years and that they were still "decent" people 7 years after the outbreak. Tess told Ellie that they weren't good people and just before her death she told Joel to do all the shit they did right.
The distance to Wyoming has to be bridged. So there will be more of these stories like Bill and Frank's.

As a big fan of the games I loved this episode and I finally got to enjoy a not-knowing-whats-going-to-happen-next experience of the series because all the major reviewers teased this episode was gonna deviate from the game the most. Up until now I was just loving the show for how well they managed to adapt the game and I was enjoying the visuals and acting performances but this episode was a totallly different experience and I just loved it. I'm so glad they did it the way they did even if they deviated from Bill's story from the first game. For context, in the game Bill and Frank don't have a happy relationship and get separated, Frank gets infected and hangs himself. Later Bill, Joel and Ellie find his body. In the game Bill serves as a mirror for Joel to not become entirely like him. Bill is super paranoic and distant toward people and his behaviour drove Frank off and he ended up alone. In this episode I feel like he was more of an "inspiration" to Joel to take down his guard a little and let someone in because it'll be worth it no matter how you end up.

I hate that I know how this is going to end and I honestly do not know the story. Every episode is just going to be sad. This so far is the worst. Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett put on an acting performance for the ages. Easily Emmy worthy. The dude bros that love the game are probably going to hate this episode but this was by far the best 60 mins of TV so far this year and it is going to be had to top it. This really hits too many emotions. Bravo.

I don’t think this is a sad ending. Bittersweet maybe but not sad.
Civilization has collapsed. There’s been a global pandemic that nearly ended humanity. There are un-infected people trying to finish the job. It’s a shit show all over.
Then we have this couple have this beautiful love story in the middle of all that. Many people can’t say they lived that well pre-apocalypse.
Then they choose to end on their own terms, peacefully in their sleep before illness and old age gets them. It’s painful but not the tragic ending it could have been.

I just realized how so many reactors thought Bill died or might have died in the raiders fight. I thought that too. It’s so interesting how the writers play with details.
But we know from episode 1 that it’s Frank and Bill’s smugglers code Ellie deciphered. Episode 2 had Tess tell Joel to take Ellie to Frank and Bill’s place. And this episode starts with Joel and Ellie on their way to Frank and Bill’s. Why all the references to Bill if he died fighting raiders 10 years earlier?
Seems like everyone is afraid Bill’s going to die in that intense scene, even fooling gamers who know Bill survives to meet with Ellie and Joel. The panic is real.
But Bill doesn’t make it this time. We finally understand why Depeche Mode was playing at the end of episode 1.

I loved this episode. I don't really think it ended tragically, or that it's so very sad. To me it's more bittersweet than anything. If you think about it, in this hellscape the whole world turned into, they're two of the few people who "won": they're safe, they have food and supplies, and, just as important if not more so, they have each other.
They spend 15 years together, and like Frank said, it wasn't always easy, but I think they were happy, at least as much as possible in that reality. Yes, the end was a little sad, but I think it would be so much worse if Bill died in the fight with the raiders, for example, or even if they got so old or sick they couldn't care for and protect themselves, especially considering one of them would go first, and the other would be left alone, with just the memories.
This way, they get to go together, on their own terms. Morbid, yes, but very fitting for that reality, and from an objective point of view, incredibly romantic. ❤

Couples who do live to advanced age often follow each other closely. It’s almost as if once their partner is gone, there’s nothing left keeping them here.
Bill wasn’t that far along. I think he could potentially have another 10-20 years. But they most likely would have been bleak years spent alone. Especially considering Bill’s nature and the state of the world.

The thing is, this is a tv show and not a video game, so there is less action than there would be in the game version of the story, so instead they do stuff like this and focus more on side characters and world building. Joel's hand is still messed up from punching that one dude in the face at the end of the first episode, so they are trying to stick to realism, so we wont be seeing Joel or Ellie falling off 20 story buildings and then being just fine the next episode or anything crazy like that, the action is severely capped and limited due to realism. I know that's a bummer to some people, but if u want the action it is better to play the game anyway. I personally prefer the game as opposed to what I'm seeing from the show, but that doesn't make the show worthless to me, I am appreciating this deeper part of the lore/world building. Except they are evidently changing some stuff, Bill never died in the first or second game and I was hoping he would still be alive for the 3rd game when they release it, but this might mean they kill him off offscreen, hopefully not.
