Dan McCafferty, Founding Nazareth Singer, Dead at 76
McCafferty was known for his powerful vocals on such hits as "Hair of the Dog" and "Love Hurts"
Dan McCafferty, the founding and longtime lead singer of classic rock band Nazareth, has passed away at age 76. The sad news was shared by Nazareth bassist Pete Agnew.
“This is the saddest announcement I ever had to make,” wrote Agnew. “Maryann and the family have lost a wonderful loving husband and father, I have lost my best friend and the world has lost one of the greatest singers who ever lived. Too upset to say anything more at this time.
Nazareth are best known for their hits “Hair of the Dog” and “Love Hurts,” the latter of which is a cover of a song originally recorded by the Everly Brothers. The Scottish band’s 1975 album Hair of the Dog was certified platinum for 1 million copies moved in the US alone.
In 2019, McCafferty released Last Testament, his third and final solo album.
Our condolences go out to Dan McCafferty’s family, friends, and bandmates during this difficult time. Revisit his soaring voice in the clips for “Hair of the Dog” and “Love Hurts,” as well as the video for his 2019 single “Tell Me,”

His passing completely slipped through my radar until a few minutes ago when I spotted this video. What a great singer! I remember so well the huge impact of HAIR OF THE DOG in the mid 70's and the album was certainly in my collection. Beyond any doubt we had one thing in common: Rock and Roll. Rest in peace DM.

Dan was an outstanding vocalist and musician. He was also a very humble and genuine fella. Greatly missed, but i am honored and thankful to have lived on this planet during his lifetime.

I remember as a young boy hearing Miss Misery. I asked my brother, who is this. He handed me Hair of the Dog album cover. That was it I was, and will forever love Nazareth. R.I.P. Dan

For 48 years Dan has been my favorite singer and Nazareth has been my favorite band.
I seen them live twice in 76 and again in 92.

The first time I heard Hair of the Dog and Razmanaz I was blown away and even better to find out later that my favorite bands, Deep Purple bass player was involved.

Hair of the Dog is my favorite! Miss Misery, Changing Times, Please Don't Judas Me, Love Hurts are up there with the greatest groups of all time, Rainbow, Sabbath, Zeppelin, AC/DC etc. Such a distinct voice that made the 70's what they were for all time! RIP!

Very underrated, especially by the late 70s, Naz never stopped turning out great stuff. Heart has admitted ripping off baracuda from night flight tonight. Bands became bigger than naz, ripping off naz.

This video is how I learned Dan has passed, and I don't know what to say. He was a big part of my youth and he will be missed. it is hard to keep up with your childhood heroes as the years pass, but he was a cornerstone of my youth.

Also I want to mention. Nicky Moore who played on Manny Charlton's CD "From Behind" whom passed away in August, just one month after Manny. The 1970s and 1980s artists are leaving us.

A great Scottish singer, with an unique vocal style, now following in the footsteps of Scots Frankie Miller, Alex Harvey, John Martyn (Anglo Scottish) Stuart Adamson of sadly passing away all too soon. But what a musical legacy he left behind, for existing fans and future generations to enjoy. Been playing some Nazareth today, brings home what a distinctive rock voice he had. R.I.P - Rock into enternity.

It was not just hs vocal ability, Dan McCafferty shared like beyond a one person soul.
That he was a 'futuristic thinker' ironically works to the benefit of 'what was a foundation' too easily forgotten!
They have rarely played that track of this authentic band on radio here. That caged Mashall speaker vibe ya can just fall into the sound, the vibe, the deep memories. It is my honor to finally see and hear the man behind the voice of NAZERETH.

Darn it. Another great one. I saw Nazareth in the Houston Music Hall for their Close Enough For Rock & Roll Tour, the album that came out after Hair of The Dog (that had Love Hurts) - that concert was a real mind-blower - they opened with "Telegram" . McCafferty was brilliant and a powerhouse of a singer. RIP.
Dan was a great singer, one of the best ever. I'm so sad he is gone. Heart's Grow Cold is one of my favorite Nazareth songs. It's heartbreaking to listen to it now that he's gone. Rest in peace big guy, we'll miss you.
