    Listening to the late Bob Kreiger, who was the engineer that day on 844, tell this story really puts in perspective how much power they were putting out on the engine as they were burning 52 gallons of oil a mile!!!! Just goes to show the power of steam engines and the upside that they still have despite being out of service on a large scale for over 60 years.

    A few years ago a old Prussian G12 was used to transport new railway sleepers, because the diesel locomotive was out of order.
    For that single day she was in active service to help in railway maintenance, like she was 100 years ago.

    Goes to show that steam locomotives can still be very useful to this day

      Agreed, steam locomotives may not be as efficient or fast as diesels but are stronger than diesels and electric engines

    • @AutismTakesOn
      @AutismTakesOn Месяц назад

      @@rainierbagatsing1073 Okay, I gotta disagree with you there. More powerful than diesels? Absolutely. More powerful than electrics? Uh... No. The most powerful steam locomotive by horsepower was the PRR Q2, at 7,987 horsepower. The most powerful single-section electric loco is the HXD2B, at 12,874 horsepower, well exceeding that of the Q2.
      You COULD argue that by tractive effort, the N&W Y6s beat anything at 166,000lbf, the SD70ACe-T4 beats it at 175,000 to 200,000 lbf, and, while the SD70ACe-T4 is a diesel, it's a diesel-electric, so it's possible to make it into an electric locomotive, add ballast, and then you have an electric with more tractive effort than a Y6.

    "I will do it! I will do it! I will do it!" Puffed 844

    Since 4014 was refitted with a dual beam headlight, they can hopefully put the mars light back on 844 when it comes back.
