    Great video. Bought a baja that was sitting in mud for 10 years. Put in new engine and welded it back to a standard bug. Tried to drive and could only ride clutch to get in first gear then stall. I will pull the engine and transmission. (Depression set in for a few hours). You inspired me to continue with this project. Thanks!

Is the tranny broke or could it be something that can be fixed. Shifter is totally loose. Thanks, love you videos.

    Thanks for the video and advice. I'm about to pull my transaxle. I've got a few leaks coming from the front of the transaxle. Any advice or videos on resealing a leaky transaxle? I've heard that it can be done with a fairly inexpensive seal kit, but I'm in new territory here.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  2 года назад

      Hello Jeff I hope that your day has gone well I’m sorry about the delay so I’m trying to catch up on comments.
      When you say the front, do you mean where the clutch assembly goes? There’s a front seal up there.
      And then of course I did a video on the seals on the sides of the transmission were the CV joints bolt up to.

    Great video as always. I also had a question about the neutral safety switch. If a person was to hook it back up, where does it connect to and what exactly does it do? Thanks!!!

    • @GarthThomson
      @GarthThomson Год назад

      I’m new to VWs so I’m presuming yours isn’t a manual gearbox as NS switches are usually found in automatic transmission cars so you can’t start them unless you select Neutral or Park. It is possible that a version of NS switch could be used to prevent you from starting your car without you depressing the clutch on a manual. It’s purpose is added safety ie you can’t inadvertently lurch fwd or backwards if you crank your engine when in gear…. Easily done when working on your car with it up on stands etc😳. In short, the electrical pathway from your ignition switch to the starter is interrupted (open) unless you select park, neutral or depress your clutch.✌️

    Another excellent video. I am pulling my engine out soon i will also drop the tranny I might I have a slight problem. When I down shift from 3rd to 2nd i get a slight grind. A friend of mine said the synchro gear can possibly be wearing out. Any highly recommended tranny shops by you?

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  2 года назад +1

      Yes, that would definitely be a synchro that’s probably worn out. Quite common.
      I’m sure it has a lot of miles on the transmission.
      And thank you for the compliment on the video. I’ll have to find out, my buddy used someone up in Michigan. They are very good at what they do. Probably about $1000 for a total rebuild the plus shipping

    If only the 3 mounts need to be replaced, can it be done without removing the transmission from the car?
    The front mount seems like it can be done by sliding the transmission towards the back of the car. If you lift the bell housing up, can you slip the rear mounts out?

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 года назад

      You can just slide the trans towards the rear bumper end of the car. You’ll have to use a jack stand to support the nosecone end of the trans while changing that mount. Also..maybe a good time to replace the seal between the nose one and tunnel!

  • @aaronorens9173
