I think Smiledog's biggest strength and what separates it from other early creepypastas is it's only gotten more relevant as we become more tech dependent. We've all gotten a scary chain letter at some point or read a comment that said to spread it or something bad might happen, so smiledog preys directly on that. With spam on certain sites only increasing, I see smiledog making a comeback in some way, be it a rewrite of the original or even people being reintroduced to the original legend
I think one of the best horrors of the story is how Mary was kind enough to not expose the narrator to Smile Dog and took her own life as a result of the horrors. But our narrator is so cold and selfish that they expose hundreds to the image just to save themselves.
Smile Dog was one of the few actually well written creepypastas right up there with ones like 1999. Also, the ending of the story brought the audience into the story and started an actual chain letter, which made it even more well made. The author nowadays is a professional author and I can tell he’s always had it in him.

Nobody knows who made the Polaroid image, which adds some creepiness to it. I personally hate the latter, it freaks me out. I can look at the red image like ooh spooky, but I can’t look at the husky one for too long or there’s actually a decent chance I’ll have nightmares. And I never have nightmares! Also, Smile Dog is one of the main antagonists in a newer unfiction series called Chainmail Chasers. He’s legitimately frightening and pretty funny at the same time. Highly recommend.

I kind of like the whole "amateur writer" bit of the story, probably bc I got into writing a few years ago bc of creepypastas like these ones. Yea, smile dog isn't perfect, but what scary story is? 😅 The poetry and novellas I write aren't perfect either, but that's not stopping me! Very nicely done sir! 😊

Back in the day, I got some horror chain mail from friends, and it was horrifying. I actually got the Teddy one and ran down to my dad, who was getting in a late-night workout, in tears, to show him the message. He handled it very well.

I remember hearing one version of the story where the image actually changed over time, with the original image allegedly being a photo of the devil. Anyone else recall that version or am I misremembering?

The red one is apparently Jeff the Killer’s dog, hence why it looks more demonic compared to the original one.
