Davis Bowie was the great chameleon, changing his image and musical styles as often as most of us change our linens. The thing was he was good at all of it. Folk, hard rock, funk and soul, psychedelia, you name it.
Yep, chameleon is the word. Aloof, arch, fashionable, smart, studio wizard. He charted his own unique course, followed by those in the know, with the occasional mega-hit thrown in. A genius, and one of the pillars of classic rock.
Agreed. He was so creative and influential that people often overlook what a great voice he had. He had a greater range than Freddie Mercury and Maria Callas.
“You never know what’s going to happen when you press play” sums up Bowie in a nutshell. From Space Oddity to Changes to Ziggy to Heroes to Let’s Dance and everything in between, each Bowie album was an adventure.
He was on Soul Train with this one.....and it was AWESOME. The whole Station to Station and Young American albums are funk laced and FIRE! This was 1975.
You're on point with the Elvis comments. Dwight Yoakam said Bowie told him that six months before Elvis’s death in August 1977, the King had phoned up and asked him to produce his next album.“That was based on Elvis having heard Bowie’s 'Golden Years' " said Yoakam.
It's impossible to choose a favourite Bowie. He gave us so many to choose from. If you don't lfeel ike listening to one David Bowie, just pick a different one. Recently I've been in the mood for Drum and Bass David Bowie so I've been listening to the Earthling album. For a flavour of that try "Little Wonder" or "I'm afraid of Americans". I think I'm edging towards Progressive Rock Bowie so - The Man who Sold the World next. If you want a flavour of that you can't go wrong with the title track. As Mama said - "David Bowie's like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get". But it'll give you life.
Love, love, love David Bowie! He was such a diverse talent with a long string of hits. He simply oozed coolness in everything he did as he was constantly evolving - smooth, funky & hip, you name it. Check out "Rebel, Rebel", "Changes", "Modern Love" etc etc. He is greatly missed.💔 Thanks so much guys for reacting to this song!
Saw Bowie live twice .His musical gift and charisma felt almost sureal. The musicians who worked with him for years are also bloody amazing too.Bowie forever ❤️
It's wild that you guys heard Elvis in this. He actually wrote this song FOR Elvis, with whom he shared a record label (RCA) but Elvis never recorded it. Bowie did play sax on quite a few of his songs, and he played guitar on most of the Diamond Dogs album. He also contributed keyboards, etc. to the "Berlin trilogy" albums.
David Bowie's first instrument was saxophone. He took lessons as a child from Ronnie Ross, a noted London jazz sideman. Ross played the sax solo in Lou Reed's "Walk On The Wild Side," which Bowie produced. You can hear Bowie play sax on his cover of the Stax classic "Knock On Wood" by Eddie Floyd on his "David Live" album, recorded in Philadelphia in 1974.
If you listen to ten David Bowie songs you’ve listened to ten David Bowie songs and you’ve heard his voice do ten different things. To know Bowie, you have to listen to EVERY album
Gentlemen You're Entering A Huge Rabbit Hole, However You Need To Start From 1968 And Work Through, You'll See Why. David Was A Genius, The Type Of Which Will Never Be Seen Again.
This is from the period he was into the Philly sound and had Luther Vandross on backing vocals with others from the scene. Great vids of them working out the different parts of the vocals.
Trailblazer...he pushed the boundaries of music, especially during that time period...my first Bowie song with Major Tom...I wasn't sure if I like it or not, but the more I listened, the more I liked.
David Bowie was a chameleon, no one-trick wonder. He changed personas, from the Thin White Duke to Ziggy Stardust... there is NO way his music could be defined by genre. I admit that during the 70s, he took a back seat to the funk, blues & soul I was listening to. Fast forward to 2006. I have a daughter who had discovered Bowie and she talked me into taking her to see Bowie live at Chastain Park in Atlanta. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. Imagine 10,000 people, in unison, singing "wham, bam, thank you ma'am," from "Suffragette City," ... he played for 3 hours with no break. He ran into SRV at Montreaux and enlisted him to play on "Let's Dance" and "China Girl." Long story short -- too late -- you guys have just begun to discover one of the greatest musicians of all time. "I'm Afraid of Americans" is another. "Angie" by the Rolling Stones was about David's wife. He later married the beautiful Somalian model, Iman, and they were together for some 20 years before his death. As always, you guys are the BEST reactors I've seen. Keep up the good work!!
First white artist to appear on soul train. The thin white duke. Bowie is a highly respected artist in the U.K. Artist being the word. He was a singer songwriter, musician, actor and fashion icon. Not to mention he married one of the most beautiful women on the plant. The man was a one off. When you’re talking influential there’s Bowie then there’s the rest.
Love what you're doing guys - what you need to appreciate about David Bowie is that in the first ten years or so of his career (c. 1969 - 1980) he had at least 5 distinctly different personas so don't be surprised if the next track you play from him sounds completely different. If you want something that rocks - 'Gene Genie', for something more funky -'Young Americans' for something completely off the wall 'Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' THE WHOLE ALBUM. Which Bowie will you choose? 😎
Whether you're into Bowie or not, this song is COOL. Some of his music just gets in your head and makes you happy😄 Gotta dance now..in my 'golden years'💃🏻 David Bowie-the definition of ENIGMA!
Just scratching the surface on this one! Don’t sleep on Bowie !the crazy thing about this guy is that he knew what the song was going to sound like before he put one note to paper!😳check out a documentary called” David Bowie , five years”!
Bowie ( pronounced Bo-ee) was a multi instrumentalist, playing Saxophone, guitar, harmonica, and piano. During this period ,mid 1970’s was his Blue-eyed soul era , he appeared on Soul train and may have been the first white artist to do so. He was heavily into drugs around this time , lost a lot of weight and adopted the Thin white duke, persona.
Icon…in a category by himself. Bowie- genius definitely pushed the envelope in all directions.❤️The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust is a great place to start,or visit whenever….that’s what got me. ❤️🤘😎
David Bowie played multiple instruments, including the piano, ukulele, chest bass, and alto saxophone. He also played the 12-string acoustic guitar and Stylophone on the song "Space Oddity".
🤩 Watching Bowie on Stage was like watching Freddie, Jagger, Roger Daltry or Plant! 🥰 Captivating .... 🥰 I love me some Ziggy Stadust, The Thin White Duke, Major Tom.... 🤗 I'll take Bowie in any incarnation! I love singing his Music the way I do Rush, Stevie Wonder, U2, Roxy Music, Marvin, PFunk, Ho Jo, Thomas Dolby, Modern English & REM! 😁Just so much fun! 😚☺🐰
David Bowie wrote "Golden Years" for Elvis Presley, but Elvis turned it down. The song was one of Bowie's biggest hits in the U.S., peaking at Number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart
Your on a roll guys. I saw Bowie in YYZ in 1974. Space Oddity was one of his best songs. Midway thru the show the lights went out and the opening guitar strumming of that song started. All of a sudden a spotlight flashed on him high in the air in a cherry picker singing the opening lines. He had bright orange hair with white powder caked on his face and a dark blue lightening bolt across his face from ear to ear. It was great. Yes the song 'Fame' is great. Funky and right up your alley. Also, yes he played multiple instruments. RIP David...
Bowie, no matter what stage of his career, was always cool. Every time I try to pick my favorite album by him, I get confounded because each are unique. I, personally, like "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" as a complete album, but "Golden Years" and "Young Americans" are possibly my favorite songs by him.
David Bowie was a genius. A great songwriter. He changed his musical style album to album. Never will be another like him. He was a sax, acoustic guitar and piano player too. His Ziggy Stardust and Diamond Dogs albums are fantastic. He shared a birthday with Elvis. Check out his song "Ashes to Ashes".
Bowie was just a standout among standouts.. Like you guys said, not for pure talent but by being the most original of all.. On a strange note, he was also a pretty good actor...
Bowie was Ziggy Stardust! You need to hear his collaboration with Queen. Under Pressure. David heard Queen was in the studio & dropped by & said let’s do a song. They jammed & this was the result
Bowie was his own genre. 🤟 He also helped launch SRV's career. He had a few constant musicians in his band over the years but used many studio artists like David Sanborn, only the best.
Part of that movie was filmed in Artesia, New Mexico - a small, oil field town in the middle of nowhere. The last place you would expect David Bowie to show up.
About his voice, here is his take on it: "I am a moderately good singer. I am not a great singer but I can interpret a song, which I don't think is quite the same as singing it." Personally, I love his voice and his ability to interpret things in a very unique way. Still miss him.
You really can't go wrong with anything Bowie did pre-Let's Dance. My favorite will always be Hunky Dory, before the personas, before the huge fame, when he was still a longhaired rocker.
Just want to give a shout out to Carlos Alomar, who keeps it strong on rhythm guitar on many Bowie albums. If I recall correctly, the bassist here is George Murray, who was with Bowie through Scary Monsters in 1980. Great rhythm section.
Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars album is his best. IMO it's such a masterpiece of an album. Of course it's from the 70's. Keep up the great reactions!
Remember, guys "Rap" wasn't even thought about but Rapping was a term used in regular conservation about people who spoke rapidly in their conservation to One another. So, that kind of talk or conversation was included in songs or lyrics of the song, but it wasn't classified as "Rap."
Bowie was at the time on the same record label as Elvis...His manager suggested to him to write a song for Elvis & this is that song...For what ever reason Elvis never got to record it....What a shame..
Damn I miss him. I miss his voice. He played alto sax, rhythm guitar, piano and harmonica. Have you listened to "Young American" yet? Killer from the 70's
David Bowie was a Chameleon and went through several phases of musical career. This was part of Bowie's R&B era, that he called 'Plastic Soul'. This album and Young Americans (1975 & 76) we both a big part of that influence. On Young Americans (song and album) you will find a previously unknown / unsigned Luther Vandross on backing vocals. And the story goes that he had some input with Bowie on the 'sound' of some of the tracks.
Fantastic flashback. Such an era. His androgynous image gave him a different fan base. I really love the guy. Back then we were supposed to be creeped out. He married a beautiful black model and I think some part of the industry shunned Bowie for marrying a supermodel. Btw: Bowie could play many instruments which helped his writing. But he always preferred more talented musicians than himself back him because his voice was his preferred instrument. Hope his wife is doing well these days.
You're right. He used to show his demos to the musicians and tell them something like "I want you to play this, but better than me" and then he gave them free hand to improve the instrumental part. Iman seems to be well these days. I think that it was hard for her during the first years after David's death, but she said that the isolation during the Covid pandemic actually helped her deal with her grief and come to terms with it. After the restrictions ended, Iman became really active. She has appeared on TV again, she has launched a perfume and she has a line of clothes now besides her old business with the cosmetics. She says she is not interested in remarrying, because, in her mind, she is still married to David, she has been wearing a necklace with his name since his death, she still talks about him in the present tense, but she seems more "open" now.
Beautiful memories - At the age of 18 I was by the Bad Segeberg open-air stage at the David Bowie concert in Germany (1984).Bowie lived from 1976-1978 in what was then divided Berlin (West), where he got off drugs. The albums "Low" (1977), "Lodger" (1979) and the well-known "Heroes" (1977) were created there. He produces The Idiot and Lust for Life with Iggy Pop, who lived next door and he appeared in the German film "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo" about the heroin scene in Berlin at the time (1981).😻
David Bowie went to finishing school in the U.k.to be a graphic artist..He consulted with one of his professors about what to pursue Hus art or music...He told a young David Jones ( real name) to do what he loved and made him happy.. His professor...Professor Frampton. Peter Framptons dad.
His era where he was so influenced by soul, Philly, Detroit, and the backing vocal arrangements (as in "Young Americans") from Luther Vandross and his singer-friends really brought it !
The "Young Americans" album is all in the genre (even has Luther Vandross backing him up) - quality throughout - not a bad track on the album ("Fame" was from this album). Superb!! Try a listen to the title track....
Golden years, gold whop whop whop Golden years, gold whop whop whop Golden years, gold whop whop whop Don't let me hear you say life's taking you nowhere, angel Come get up my baby Look at that sky, life's begun Nights are warm and the days are young Come get up my baby There's my baby, lost that's all Once I'm begging you save her little soul Golden years, gold whop whop whop Come get up my baby Last night they loved you, opening doors and pulling some strings, angel Come get up my baby In walked luck and you looked in time Never look back, walk tall, act fine Come get up my baby
He played some guitar and keyboards but he mostly had other musicians. Station to Station might be my favorite album of his. Alladin Sane, Low and Scary Monsters are up there as well. After you’ve listened to his whole catalog the Live album he performed in Philly is excellent
Seems that the period of 1973-1978, was a golden period..with awesome bands popping up almost weekly! We were blessed to have lived during that time! The list of groups is a who’s who of great music….glad to see you guys drinking it in!
You''re very wrong: Bowie has a great voice... He can scream, howl and croon all in the same song - this was released in November1975. He referred to this and other as 'plastic soul', great song and fantastic dance floor.
That was the single version with a fade out and a different mix. More Philly Soul than disco (late 75). His Young Americans (with Fame on it) and Station to Station were his trip in the funky/soul lane. You can dig deeper in there with Stay or Station to Station (10 minutes epic!).
David was a true innovator and musical genius! He reinvented himself numerous times over 3+ decades. You should dig deep on him by watching the documentary films “Out of This World“ and “Moonage Daydream”
As a life long fan of Bowie..basically across his 50 year career. I can highly recommend you guys take the never ending, forever interesting journey of Bowies music. I was fortunate enough to see him live twice ..once at the beginning of his journey, then his final world reality tour ..believe me he is that good and all the incredible musicians who worked along side him..Brilliant. Enjoy.
Such a beautiful, talented and genius of a man. We are blessed to be able to enjoy his creativity. Thanks guys you are the best. Bowie would have loved to have heard your reactions to his music.
Stay by Bowie. Funky, killer ruff!

Yep, chameleon is the word. Aloof, arch, fashionable, smart, studio wizard. He charted his own unique course, followed by those in the know, with the occasional mega-hit thrown in. A genius, and one of the pillars of classic rock.
And post punk, proto punk to, pop to
I think Bowie had a wonderful voice. Huge range, great rich bass .
Agreed. He was so creative and influential that people often overlook what a great voice he had. He had a greater range than Freddie Mercury and Maria Callas.
he knew how to lay a vocal down only would do a few takes too
“You never know what’s going to happen when you press play” sums up Bowie in a nutshell. From Space Oddity to Changes to Ziggy to Heroes to Let’s Dance and everything in between, each Bowie album was an adventure.

Funny that you mentioned Elvis. Bowie offered this song to the King but he turned it down saying that it wasn’t for him at that time.

👍🏻 All of the above + Diamond Dogs and Suffragette City. Really enjoyed Bowie in high school and early college years.

Yep, the “Young Americans” Era.
He also played piano and guitar.
Great job guys. If more Bowie's comin', I vote for Moonage Daydream. Tata
Since you guys like SRV, listen to Bowies ‘China Girl’. SRV played the lead on that song.
If you listen to ten David Bowie songs you’ve listened to ten David Bowie songs and you’ve heard his voice do ten different things. To know Bowie, you have to listen to EVERY album

This is from the period he was into the Philly sound and had Luther Vandross on backing vocals with others from the scene. Great vids of them working out the different parts of the vocals.
Bowie changed his sound and style many times over his long history and nailed it every time there is no one like Bowie
Suffragette City, Changes, Rebel Rebel, Fame, Space Oddity, Starman, Life on Mars...the list goes on and on. Yes, a singular talent.
The Goblin King
Trailblazer...he pushed the boundaries of music, especially during that time period...my first Bowie song with Major Tom...I wasn't sure if I like it or not, but the more I listened, the more I liked.
Diamond dogs is. Great album 👍

I went to that concert! It was SPECTACULAR. What an amazing night.
David Bowie-the definition of ENIGMA!
Been honest, I don't know anyone who doesn't like at least one Bowie song, if not all!!!
Do you mean enigma?
@@heathcliff8624 thanks! I thought it looked wrong, am dealing w/brain fog today.👍🏻-in my golden years!!
Well said.
@@olly8 Brain fog is a daily occurrence over here lol.
If you really want to hear Bowie's change over the years, check out "Heart's Filthy Lesson", especially live. It's HARD.
Bowie and Freddie duet Under Pressure, his voice holds up just fine.😂
He played Saxophone, Guitar, Piano, Keyboards, Harmonica, Mouth Harp, Koto, Mandolin, Viola, Violin, Cello.

David Bowie was a genius and every album had a different flavor
I love Bowie. He was always taking chances with his music. I think his funk period and the Berlin trilogy are really worth checking out.

David Bowie played multiple instruments, including the piano, ukulele, chest bass, and alto saxophone. He also played the 12-string acoustic guitar and Stylophone on the song "Space Oddity".

Bowie was just a standout among standouts.. Like you guys said, not for pure talent but by being the most original of all.. On a strange note, he was also a pretty good actor...
Yeah people hardly ever talk about his acting. I guess when you're so talented at doing one thing they forget you can do other things.
David Bowie was a musical genius, as well as been a King of cool!
Legend is that he wrote this one for Elvis but he didn't record it obviously so David Bowie took this one far up the charts. Great song
Indeed. I was going to comment on this if someone hadn't. Amazingly they kind of picked up on this too!
Bowie was Ziggy Stardust! You need to hear his collaboration with Queen. Under Pressure. David heard Queen was in the studio & dropped by & said let’s do a song. They jammed & this was the result
Bowie offered this song to Elivs (1976). Colenol Tom Parker wouldn't let Elivs record it. He played sax, guitar, piano and synths
The live version of this song on Soul Train is epic.
You're diving into a deep sea with Bowie...My favorite album is Hunky Dory, but really, there's just so much.
Bowie was his own genre. 🤟 He also helped launch SRV's career. He had a few constant musicians in his band over the years but used many studio artists like David Sanborn, only the best.
Bowie starred in a syfi movie called, "The Man Who Fell to Earth," and his music often sounded like it came from another planet, it was so unique.
Wouldn’t surprise me if he were an alien.
Part of that movie was filmed in Artesia, New Mexico - a small, oil field town in the middle of nowhere. The last place you would expect David Bowie to show up.

Fantastic musician and songwriter. His Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars album is one of the best records ever made.
Bowie's "Plastic Soul" phase.
So many incarnations. Most likely be the most influential artist ever.
Suffragette City was one of his early rock hits. It has the now famous line Wham, Bam, Thank You, Ma’am!
Just want to give a shout out to Carlos Alomar, who keeps it strong on rhythm guitar on many Bowie albums. If I recall correctly, the bassist here is George Murray, who was with Bowie through Scary Monsters in 1980. Great rhythm section.
Thank you all! I heard he wanted Elvis Presley to sing on this with him! He's doing a kind of Elvis impression, too!
Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars album is his best. IMO it's such a masterpiece of an album. Of course it's from the 70's. Keep up the great reactions!

Wonderful, respectful reaction guys. If you have any doubt about Bowis vocal qualities listen to his version of WILD IS THE WIND. He sings like a God.
Damn I miss him. I miss his voice. He played alto sax, rhythm guitar, piano and harmonica. Have you listened to "Young American" yet? Killer from the 70's
I was very upset when Bowie passed away. An icon. A trend setter. An artist.
I cried for days!
Favorite song by him. Dude could switch up styles like probably nobody.

What😮
@@jiwi736 true story
His era where he was so influenced by soul, Philly, Detroit, and the backing vocal arrangements (as in "Young Americans") from Luther Vandross and his singer-friends really brought it !
The "Young Americans" album is all in the genre (even has Luther Vandross backing him up) - quality throughout - not a bad track on the album ("Fame" was from this album). Superb!! Try a listen to the title track....
"Station to station", the opener and title track of the album that contains this single is eclecticism and Bowian creativity at his best.
My favorite.
Gotta listen to his early albums to see the evolution of Bowie’s music. Station to Station is one of my favorites.
Bowie's onto something. That's an understatement.
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Don't let me hear you say life's taking you nowhere, angel
Come get up my baby
Look at that sky, life's begun
Nights are warm and the days are young
Come get up my baby
There's my baby, lost that's all
Once I'm begging you save her little soul
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Come get up my baby
Last night they loved you, opening doors and pulling some strings, angel
Come get up my baby
In walked luck and you looked in time
Never look back, walk tall, act fine
Come get up my baby
The "thin white duke" creative genius. Loved his deep voice. So diverse
There are so many layers to this song you can't even hear everything that's going on in it.
Only star I can think of that compares to is The Beatles, in that his songs never sound the same!!❤❤❤❤
He played some guitar and keyboards but he mostly had other musicians.
Gotta listen to the B Side - Can You Hear Me. His whole discography is fantastic
Bowie sure could fill the Dance floor .
I recommend Bowie's "Scary Monsters and Super Creeps", the entire album is fantastic, but it had the hit "Ashes To Ashes".
You''re very wrong: Bowie has a great voice... He can scream, howl and croon all in the same song - this was released in November1975. He referred to this and other as 'plastic soul', great song and fantastic dance floor.
Bowie could and DID do everything he was a genius. RIP Dave thanks for the groves.
Bowie was a master of sound and soul.
This song comes on the radio and you immediately crank up the volume.
Bowie was definitely one of a kind.
Besides singing Bowie played several instruments, guitar, keyboards, saxophone, and harmonica.
You mentioned Elvis. It was offered to Elvis to do first by Bowie but he wasn't interested so Bowie did it himself with that Elvis sound to his voice.
Enjoy.
Agreed! ⚡
Such a beautiful, talented and genius of a man. We are blessed to be able to enjoy his creativity. Thanks guys you are the best. Bowie would have loved to have heard your reactions to his music.
“Is he rapping?” For at least 40 years that has been my question. I reckon absolutely.
