The point of no return was when Vassily allowed the pawn push. That pawn on the 6th rank is the most important piece. It allows checkmate in multiple variations
I honestly think that this video belongs in the "What Sorcery is This?" series. This attack was beautiful. Really shows how one pawn pushed all the way up the board can change the game.
The difference in position is Ivanchuk’s pieces became very discoordinated from piece grabbing in queenside while Yusupov’s pieces were mobilized perfectly in attack directly against white king
I was thinking about this game today. Yusopovs magum opus one of my 10 favorite games of all time alongside such immortals as the Evergreen game and Fishers games of Witchcraft against Robert Byrne and his immortal against Donald Byrne, Nezhmetdinov- Polugaesvky among a few others.
never seen such a game! may be there are some; may be there are not any; at least at this high level. can only say the bull Ivanchuk lost both his horns to a worthy opponent. thanks for showing this game with your usual analysis. fantastic game and good job in re-presenting it. thanks.
An amazing game, esp since it was only a 30 min. Rapidplay tiebreak. Two things: 1) the GMs watching in Brussels, incl Karpov, unanimously declared Yusupov's knight sac unsound. 2) However, after Nd5 Chucky had to grab Black's f-pawn, thus also weakening the e-pawn. Seirawan analyzed this & I believe demonstrated that this should win for White.
25 Nce7 should have been played rather than 25 Nde7, according to Seirawan, Christiansen, and Willy Watson. The three of them analyzed the position together, then afterward Yaz found the win at home.
Thank you for all your videos! Always enjoy them and learn a lot from the greats! You said many times that you like Aronian style of chess and at the moment he is one of the most interesting top chess players. And you often use (as in this video) he words about "immortal games" of the players. Which game ov Aronian would you consider to be his immortal if he has! Thanks again
It's definitely a game deserving of a title of sorts, as Ivantchuk's defense is almost as brilliant as Yussupov's attack. As impressive as the attacking ideas are, Ivantchuk keeps finding ways to throw spanners into the works. In other "immortal" games one very often finds that the player who becomes the victim of brilliant attacking play is a bit of a pushover who makes things too easy for the attacker. Just saying.
what lol. there have been like 5 immortals against topalov who is definitely no pushover, fischer's was against a GM, nezhmetdinov's was against a GM etc, 90% of the time these are against gms
When ivanchuk graps with the queen the black ruck by a8. After this he only have the next move to but his Knight from c6 to e7. So his queen has the hole white line connect with the bishop and in the same time the black ruck is under attack
Yes it seems like a very nervie game I think you'd have to have a lot of moxie to-- like you say-- keep playing without thinking too much about what the other guy is doing definitely kudos to Yusopov. it almost seems like it could have gone either way if just one or two things have gone wrong for Yusopov.
One of the most aggressive games by the black pieces I ever seen. The white piece never got to get in the offensive besides being materialistic. Love this game
Yes yusupov got the upper hand but according to me ivanchuk is the real warrior of this game I mean really look at his moves its totally out of anyone's mind but the g3 pawn has brings up a loosing game for him And yes i agree with u ivanchuk was beast of the beast at that time... And once again ivanchuk's moves are really amazing i mean seriously thats why i m saying again about his moves Omg 😱
1:17 also not far away from me. His children are very good at chess - one of the best in Bavaria :) 3:25 he invites the tiger. it's like a tiger [...] but be very very careful about inviting a tiger to dinner - the tiger may have you for dinner [...] the irony is, if you look a that very final position - the tiger on e3 - that was invited ... was forced by white [...] is still there. And he had white for dinner ~ GM Yasser Seirawan ruclips.net/video/x6rWHMDhHmw/видео.html
I feel like Ba3 by Ivanchuk was his point of no return, he needed to play e4, or at the least e3 to keep that pawn from marching its way down the board and lodging itself deep in Ivanchuk's camp.
"By some ardent enthusiasts, chess has been elevated into a science or an art. It is neither; but its principal characteristic seems to be what human nature most delights in - a fight." - Emanuel Lasker
Chess blindness can afflict any player. Ivanchuk in hindsight shouldn't have pushed those Queen side pawns while his opponent's pawn sat on e3. To answer Agadmator's question. This game is an immortal.
Yusupov's immortal seems right. A brilliancy of an attack with real sacrifices against a very strong player in his prime, what more can you ask for? One false move by Yusupov and everything crumbles... But when does the game tilt, exactly? A safer choice than b3 followed by Ba3 would be to stop or kill Yusupov's e-pawn first. Ivanchuk uses two moves to pin one pawn - against a brilliant tempo player - and leaves the knight on c3, which may soon be the only safegard for the rook on a1, to be babysat by the queen. Not quite healthy. Later he can't use the knight to defend his king without giving up the exchange. And once Yusupov played e4, e3 couldn't be prevented and after that the kingside attack can't really be stopped. *I'd say b3 was the fatal move.*
So just so I understand the term correctly, "immortal" applies to the single greatest game played by a player right? Like Mikhail has played a million great games, but he only has 1 immortal?
An 'immortal' chess game actually means a chess game that is beautiful, so beautiful it will be remembered in the history of chess. For example, the immortal Evergreen game played by Anderssen against Dufresne. It is played hundreds of years ago, but we can still enjoy its beauty. That's why it is called 'immortal'.
9:42 if you move king to e1 instead of checking with the rook I think you can escape the situation, probably won’t win you the game but could give you a chance with 2 rooks vs a queen
@@demaloe No. If an "immediate" Qg1+ then Bf1 interposes, and then could follow Qf2+ Kd1 and the king wriggles away. However, white's bishop will surely be lost whatever happens. Also, if the rook remains at b1 it is supported by its colleague at a1 should the black queen call check on the first rank. Of course, if white played Ke1 initially then the black queen can just snatch up the bishop on g2 without dispute. Also, black still has a lot of aggressive activity if he can capture the pawn at e2.
Artur's pawn is more useful than my queen..
Both guys are completely not interested in what the other is doing!
That isn't true; this is refuted by blacks pawn push in the center to e2 specifically to screw with whites plan.
Like ships passing in the night
Hahahahahahaha!! Cory Goodman you're wayyy to serious man chill out
Neither is the dog. He quit the couch at 0:40!

The point of no return was when Vassily allowed the pawn push. That pawn on the 6th rank is the most important piece. It allows checkmate in multiple variations
Nd:e7? Nc:e7!
Chucky said he picked up the wrong knight.
Never thought someone could beat ivanchuk in this manner was devastating
Actually Yusupov was not only "quite a guy". In fact he was once the world number three, behind only the two K's.
Kasparov and?
Psyman2 Karpov
Psyman2 karlsen
Silent Monologue lol
Silent Monologue lmao
Whatever one calls it, what a masterful, and fatal, attack by Yusupov! I wonder at what point Ivanchuk saw it coming.
Slow death
I honestly think that this video belongs in the "What Sorcery is This?" series. This attack was beautiful. Really shows how one pawn pushed all the way up the board can change the game.
@Oissev Onos Are you Seirawan's agent?
Great game and you have a perfect voice for a commentator!
Joël Cuerrier I agree, the main reason he's the only chess channel I watch is his beautiful accent
Am happy that you made a video that I suggested , thank you very much Antonio!
The difference in position is Ivanchuk’s pieces became very discoordinated from piece grabbing in queenside while Yusupov’s pieces were mobilized perfectly in attack directly against white king
I adore Yusupov's style here. Definitely deserves the title !
I was thinking about this game today. Yusopovs magum opus one of my 10 favorite games of all time alongside such immortals as the Evergreen game and Fishers games of Witchcraft against Robert Byrne and his immortal against Donald Byrne, Nezhmetdinov- Polugaesvky among a few others.
albeit being a chukky fan, I have to agree old man yusupov with the pirate pieces played this one out in a fashion , #Tal would approve
I like it very much when a player (ivanchuk here) keeps playing and enduring the pressure till the end
Under pressure.

Ps -- even though a rapidplay, I believe it was selected as top game in that issue of Chess Informator
Read Seirawan's very in-depth analysis -- reprinted in a couple books. White was winning
25 Nce7 should have been played rather than 25 Nde7, according to Seirawan, Christiansen, and Willy Watson. The three of them analyzed the position together, then afterward Yaz found the win at home.
Yusupov was a master at screwing with your game plan and causing mistakes. Love him and his beard.
His Smile and Optimism: Gone.
Excellent game, thank your for posting.
#suggestion could you make a playlist with the immortal games tour have covered on your channel.. Thank you
Awesome game! Looks like the point of no return was the Ba3 move. The e-pawn advance proved to be just lethal for black.
@ 5:13 "It's like both players are completely uninterested in what the other guy's doing." Holy shit that made me laugh
My boi yusupov, slayer of beasts, destroyer of worlds
That game was amazing, thanks to my man Agadmator to bring in such quality content.
beautiful and exciting game
Ivanchuk losing!? :O
Not much of a surprise. Of course, he is RUclips's chess god :). But he never had highest rating, which means he had to loose time to time.
He doesn't have the highest rating but he rails some world champions from time to time
That e3 pawn for black is a beast wow
Yet another lesson in 'position' trumping assets. I kept waiting for Ivanchuk to get out of trouble simply because he had way more assets.

Thx Agad!
Yusupov's Books? An advice please? Are they good to progress ?
One of the best chess games I have ever seen!
that was a great game I really enjoyed watching it

Love these old ones! Even if in 30 fps ;-)
Insane game. Thanks for sharing.
Getting shot by burglars was a pretty standard day in Moscow in the 1990s.
The game was lost as soon as that 'thorn pawn' hit e3.
Yep, it made all the difference and allowed Yusopov to base his attack in accordance with it.
But then again he didn't just win this one game.
Wow... Amazing game
Wow! What a game!
Yes, one heck of a game!
Ivanchuk allowed the pawn to settle at E3, and i think it is the most powerful position to checkmate with various pieces further
One of the most aggressive games by the black pieces I ever seen. The white piece never got to get in the offensive besides being materialistic. Love this game
#suggestion More Ivanchuk!
Could the g5 knight move to e4 at 3:45 to cut off the protection for e3 pawn thus bringing its glory to an end?

Yusopov is playing like Mr. Barnes against Paul Morphy

Great game!

indeed, a super pawn!
What a game...!
After Reb1, Nh3, why doesn't Ivanchuk play Ke1? If Qg1+, Bf1, Qf2+, Kd1
Vassily Ivanchuk must have thought, "Oh dear, I wish I had no pawn on e2.... None of this would have happened"
Please show Kasparov vs Topalov in Netherlands 1999
I'm sure he has already done this game. Who hasn't!?
Amazing game
Do a video on the dead chess prodigy Lil Peep.

how i can improve our middle game?
why rook e6 to g6 instead of the simple Rg8 threatening chekmate with the queen sac as shown by agad, if the bishop on g7 moves...??
A fun game!
Those sacrifices would make Tal smile.
That freaking e3 pawn
Immortal.

That was such a brawl.
Ivanchuck had a pretty rook on A1 square though!
So just so I understand the term correctly, "immortal" applies to the single greatest game played by a player right? Like Mikhail has played a million great games, but he only has 1 immortal?
yea basically
Fisher has many games worth of inmortal but he created his at 13y with the queen sack against a GM
all Tal's games are immortal ^_*

I don't think Botvinnik has a million immortal games. In earlier times these games were sometimes called 'evergreen' as with Adolf Anderson & co.
@Oissev Onos the only player who deserve all immortal game was Rashid!
Wow at that black pawn on e3.
black pawn e3 a monster!!!
cool game
That pawn was a beast
What was the point of no return?
Nd:e7? Nc:e7!
No beast can withstand checkmate
When fighting the King's Indian Defense, White really needs to get in P-K4. Ooooops....e2-e4, That should have been his 11th move.
9:42 if you move king to e1 instead of checking with the rook I think you can escape the situation, probably won’t win you the game but could give you a chance with 2 rooks vs a queen

not only beat ivanchuk, yusupov also smoked Levy when he was little 😅
what is most interesting to me is that White's last rook had nothing to do through the game. as well as two unmoved pawns
omg agadmator, stop telling the winner before the end huahuahhau
He was doomed from the moment he let that pawn get to e3. Nde7 was also a mistake, he should have played Nce7.
