William Leveni they actually do say that in the movie. The call the prince the big guy is working for foolish and 'expensive. They will miss Angus, they will miss his sword.
Thats why it was "foolish... And expensive. We will miss Angus tonight, we will miss his sword" It was a very heavy toll to pay. But necessary to put the winey backstabbing Prince in his place before he did something stupid and got them all killed.
Lo there do I see my father and my father's father. My mother and her mother and father, my brothers and sisters and all of the line of my people stretching back thru the ages to the beginning. They call to me and welcome me to the feast at Valhalla.
No. You missed it as well. He could have killed him at anytime. That was the point. He let it go on that long. To show the prince, who was a little ass bag, they can kill him just a quick. Physiological warfare at the basic level.
I've read the book and at the end, when Buliwyf had died, Wiglif (the prince) mocked his death and Herger got angry. They both dueled and Herger finally slayed him. I wonder if the director shot this scene. It would be great to have it included👍
There was a lot of good stuff from the book they left out, but unlike a lot of adaptations, they still managed to get the meat of it all... the important bits. The one change I hated was making the Wendol just regular ol' guys in bear skins. The novel made 'em out to be big, strong subhumans - basically a tribe of Cavemen who had somehow survived in isolation up in the mountains. Gave the novel a bit of subtle fantasy or sci-fi vibe, which is something Michael Crichton excels at.
To further laymanize. The fight was not about who was the stronger, faster or even more skilful with the sword. It was about who was more cunning, or simply put smarter. The mind is a more dangerous weapon. By going through this, Herger basically showed this prince that he had to watch out for more than their brawn and brute. Who knows now what else they are capable of doing. Lets say this is a boxing match. Some boxers like to taunt their opponent in the prefight buildup like Hopkins and Mayweather. The fight started with taunting. Muhammad Ali is a master of this. Because when an opponent fights angry they tend to be reckless. Let us look at rumble in the Jungle. Ali allowed a bigger and stronger forman to come at him, miss and swing. He deflected his punches by positioning himself against the ropes and then he waits for foreman to tire. THen.... after that, Foreman was just fish out of water
It was a formal duel but it was also a subterfuge. In a very brutal way it was a message to the prince. He was undermining them the whole time and speaking ill of them to the king. When he killed the big one, with a single blow, it was telling him to stop
