Restoration of Rusty Wakizashi - I Thought it was Katana

- Hello folks! Today I wanted to show you the restoration of the katana, and it turned out to be wakizashi. I received the item as a gift and I want to restore it. Well, let's start the restore.
I want to say right away - this is the first time I held a cold Japanese weapon. Therefore, I ask you to take this into account. I have no experience with it. The first duty, I took apart the scabbard and hilt. The blade was placed in a jar with a rust remover.
All the details on the sheath and handle of the wakizashi turned out to be strange, apparently someone just did according to his imagination as he liked. After cleaning the blade, I realized that it was not tempered and carried out heat treatment. Next, I noticed the sword guard on a new sawn out of brass, but the first option did not work out for me and I made another one, also made of thick brass.
I securely assembled the handle of the blade and fastened it with additional bushings. The handle itself has a non-standard shank, that's why I assembled this handle this way. I glued the handle with genuine leather. And for the first time in my life, I tried to wrap it in the traditional Japanese style. It wasn't easy.
I slightly sharpened the blade, darkened it so that it would not rust anymore. I glued the sheath of wakizashi with leather. Likewise, I collected all the details as it was before and made a small test for you. I hope you enjoy this restoration video.

The Tang was the give away. The Japanese swords I’ve messed with have a full tang or a tang the same size as the blade. Most are held in place with a single pin. They have a Tsuba that is a copper or bronze piece in front of the guard, oval shims between the tusuba and guard and handle. The handle is usually wood with manta skin glued to it with leather or string wrapped with a certain pattern and two brass pieces held in place by the String as markers for where to put your hands. The brass piece in the hilt is what the string is ran thru. That is my very limited understanding of Japanese katana and wakazashi construction. I’m sure things vary, but a rod wit a nut on the end is not Japanese at all. Your addition made the blade much better than the mockery you started with.

Let me share my little knowledge about this... Japanese katana is mostly made out of tamahagane ( bloom steel ) since japanese back on the period where they have a limited access to a quality steel.. so they made it by themselves...
Most katanas have a specific characters and design and for japanese, the katana tht made with tamahagane is considered as a piece of arts.. so, in modern nowadays.. any types of katanas tht modernly made or using a high carbon 1095 or 1060 steel instead of tamahagane, is considered as a mere weapon... but take a note tht these regulations is only used at japanese.. so in my opinion, because the tamahagane is considered as a rare materials and hard to find in nowadays.. so that's why they considered in that way..
Many modern katanas are produced in various types of forms... And the one in that videos is blade with rat-tail tang and most bladed weapon tht made in tht particular tang is merely for display... And the blade is not thick compared to the original japanese katana..
The main parts of japanese katana is starting from the blade it self where the tip of the blade is called ' kisaki ' and the curve of the blade is called ' sori '. Going down to the bottom of the blade has a one piece of copper collar called ' habaki ' along with the spacers ( seppa ) tht assembled with the handguard known as ' tsuba '. The handle itself is called ' tsuka ' which is wrapped with the stingray skin known as ( samegawa/samehada ) and the diamond wrapping thing is called ' tsuka-maki '.. the two piece of brass thing on the handle is called ' menuki ' which the ornaments as decorations for the tsuka handle. And last but not least, the pin that holds the katana together is called ' mekugi '...
So, for my personal opinion.. if we want to say wether the katana is original or not, is by looking at the blade and most japanese production has a natural hamon line due to the process of heat-treating and clay is applied on the blade which tht makes the hamon pattern.. and of course like I mentioned before, the katana that used tamahagane is the only one considered as originally made... While other types of katanas in nowadays is considered as a mere weapon.. I don't like to called it fake because it is function as the original katana do.. and even stronger due to the quality material in modern reproduction...
Full tang means it's the same width as the handle and the handle "scales" sandwich the blade like many steak knives. Katana are "enclosed" or "encapsulated" tang.
@@austinaxley81 most katanas are exactly the same width all the way down. But are not sandwiched with metal showing. I agree with the tang being the same width, but didn’t think the metal had to show. So if the metal doesn’t show and the tang is completely encased in the handle, what is that referred too? Just curious so I don’t make the mistake again.

japanese sword practitioner and teacher here! This was so cool to watch. It's definitely some strange wall hanger version of the real thing but its not nearly as flimsy from it's appearance as a modern one . Maybe some older dated variation of a wall hanger/ decor item? not sure , either way nice restoration!

дешёвых китайских сувенирных клинков. В начале 2000-х мои друзья не редко привозили такие
из Суйфуньхэ и Харбина. И качество металла, и прочие материалы... Вот прям оно. А по итогу такая прикольная штука получилась!)

У меня эти китайские сувенирки вызывают вообще дикую ностальгию. В мои подростковые годы, такой меч воспринимался чем-то нереально крутым, почти как настоящий) Так что, я испытал невероятно тёплые чувства увидев эту реставрацию)

Looking at it, I suspect it was something made to sell to tourists, or to someone living abroad who couldn't inspect what they were purchasing. The fact that parts of it were made from plastic is a bit of a giveaway. I'm no expert but I watch other channels where swords of all kinds are made from scratch, including katanas, wakizashis and tanto daggers. Doubtless the maker of this specimen did the best they could and put their heart and soul into it, but it falls well short of what most of us think of as 'authentic'. Nevertheless, you did a good job with it, and I hope it brings you pleasure for years to come!
Its a new age replica they are called mall ninja weapons here in the USA. You can get them for 35 or 40 dollars. This one looks like someone broke the blade and tryed to repair it but as always you did an awesome job and made it all your own and beautiful as always.

I'm 999% certain that's just a decorative replica. Likely Chinese-made, of the kind that is sold at "1 euro bazaars" in my country. I once bought nine of those in bulk. Because of the supports that came with them. Were worth more than the... swords. Good to see you showing your skills restoring things anyway, even if they are not worthy of restoration.

I think they meant how the scabbard or saya is katana length while the blade isn’t, since it seems it was swapped out at some point.
It looks like somebody made this with random materials as a decorative piece. Then you found it and made it into something real. 😊

Yanno for a cobbled together art version of one it looked pretty good. I can see myself enjoying it on a wall in its original state. You definitely rocked out the resto mod though.
Definitely someones attempt at a wakazashi unfortunately they didnt understand how they tang is supposed to work. It reminds me of the $30 katana I got as a kid. With a Rat Tang and nylon cord wrap. Too bad you didnt chop of the rat tail and weld a new tang on or just create a tanto out of it with new furniture. Regardless nice work at making this trash something useful. Keep up the good work!

It was probably originally a cheap Chinese knockoff katana, what is known as “wallhanger” meaning purely decorative “sword-shaped object”.
Too long to be a standard tanto, too short to be a standard wakizashi. Must have been cut down due to being broken some time before it came to you.
Nonetheless you did better than should be expected with such an “art piece”. Me, I would have cut down the sheath to match the blade length but I’m not you… or the customer.
In any case I’m very glad you did it and posted it. Always happy to see you work with a smile, bringing us smiles too.

I have the exact same design from a yard sale. I'm afraid it's not someone's art piece, but rather a cheap replica product mass-produced in China. Nevertheless, you still managed to turn it into something beautiful. Great job!

Совет, может будет полезным. При опускании горячего металла в воду ради закалки, необходимо этот самый метал постоянно двигать в воде, так как вокруг раскаленного метала образуется воздушная прослойка и соответственно углерод хуже запирается в верхних слоях металла, что означает, что изделие будет более мягким. Обоснование может не совсем точное, но нас учили, что обязательно надо постоянно двигать изделие в воде во время закалки. Может будет это сообщение полезным, а может нет, но я на всякий случай напишу))

Alex, I'd just like to let you know that your channel is probably my favorite on RUclips and you have inspired me to restore my first knife. I am a student and live in the United States in a big city and therefore don't have access to many of the same tools, or the same workshop space that you have. Despite this, when I went to visit my family abroad, I stayed with my grandmother in the countryside where my late grandfather had a shed and a bunch of old tools laying around. The morning after I had first arrived to the village, I immediately checked the shed for all of these instruments and some axes and found a long, possibly kitchen knife and I made it my goal to restore it in my two week stay at the village before returning home. At the moment of writing this comment, I have 3 days before my departure and am finishing up my restoration. Since it's my first restoration of any knife or tool, it is very flawed: I used a soft type of wood and wasn't able to fully fill all of the spaces between the knife and handle with epoxy, I also was not able to perfectly sand the handle down and it is therefore not entirely symmetrical or fully smooth to the touch, and I didn't have anything to make pins so I ended up cutting and shrinking the diameter of 2 steel bolts to fit the holes of the knife and the handle. Nevertheless, I am proud of my restoration and I greatly thank you for producing quality content and inspiring me to do this! Thanks Alex!

We all have to start somewhere. I've a childhood pocket knife which is first on my list; it's had a clean up and a sharpen, so it's once more in use after a month-long rusty mishap, and I've an old lump hammer for number two.

Скорее всего это новодел или китайская копия. У катаны на лезвии есть хабаки, хвостовик широкий и рукоять крепиться на бамбуковый пенек(типо заклёпки), у вакидзаси тоже самое. Но ваша работа шикарна)

There's no way a Georgian made it. Every time one tries their hand at a katana/wakizashi, it always devolves to კალდიმი.
most likely someone bought a wakizashi on the cheap and tried to customize it by hand. thus the rat tang, the cord belt wrapping, the upholstery, etc.

Возможно это и была катана изначально, но клинок наверно сломался, поэтому такой короткий. А т.к. сая (ножны) пластмассовые, то скорее всего это декоративная катана - на стену повесить. Вообще, сая делается из магнолии (упоминание об этом в субтитрах было правильным 👍) и покрывается лаком, так что с кожей это уже кавказский вариант. 😉👍 Можно было бы обрезать ножны под длину клинка... А так, нормально получилось, по сравнению с тем, что было. 👍😉
Кстати, с бородой - это айн получился, а не японец, что совсем не отменяет ношение катаны/вакидзаси. 😉

Most often, I find the material for restoration at flea markets, metal receiving points, friends also ask me, and sometimes it's just an order.
