They're made of a Zink/Aluminum alloy. Made un-sharpened for sword practitioners. An iaito is an un-sharpened blade, where as a shinken is fully functional sharpened blade made for cutting. As a Toyama Ryu practitioner, we use both types. An Iaito for practice and the shinken for cutting tatami mats.
A great craftmanship and quality! I was personally at Minosaka 2023 in the summer and got introduced into the way of making these famous Iaitos. It was an amazing and interesting experience to see how these High Quality Swords were made. I ordered at that day my own customized Iaito and got it two months later. Everything worked fine with the shipping and when I finally held my Custom Iatio in my hands I was very touched and felt myself privilleged to be able to posses such an incredible beautiful work made in Gifu/Japan by such great people! These are swords made for training, not real "Samurai" swords for combat. It seems quiet clear ('Iaido')! Yer, they still are beautiful objects, for Japanese culture lovers! I have a cheap 'working' one, not for "Iaido', but not "master build" either. Very happy to own it ! And you could defend yourself with it, in case of need!
I also got one quite cheap one (Chinese flat iron without cutting edge). As soon as I reach 3rd Dan in Iaido, I want to go to Japan and search for a nice Nihonto, as we are allowed to practice with those from that rank on.

They are an aluminum zinc blend(and like 6 other random metalls) you actually get a sheet of it's metal composition to pass strict import laws of some countries. In fact if you just bring a magnet with you amd show it's not magnetic, apparently japan, anerica, europe, will just let you in and out that way
Guys these are probably Aluminum blades. Iaido uses soft metal blades for practice since the blades rarely touch. These are also really good for beginners since they are cheaper and not sharp. No one is swinging razor sharp swords at each other.😂
1) They are not that soft and handel light to avg blows. 2)idc how dull it is, you hit someone hard enough with an edged hunk of mass, it will break bones. 3)the tips are pointy enough to run someone through 4.masters do katas with live blades. And it's not unheread of to find out out masters don't warn thier replacement of what attack they are picking. "If you're ready you'll defend "
hamon comes from differential heat treat of the blade. Masking a wavy pattern and grind/polishing "hamon" is basically a fake that's not going to last.

"Swords" made from Aluminum must be uniquely Japanese thing because they need licenses and permissions to own a sharp stick or a set of balls. Here in US I don't need any permissions, I can buy dull swords/knives/machetes or sharp as I please. I can order them online and have them delivered tomorrow to my house, no questions asked, no permissions needed.
Because these are cast steel swords (not forged) for practice. They would be too brittle to actually use as a real sword. Basically, molten metal is poured into a mold in the rough shape of a sword. So it is inferior to a forged sword. Nevetheless, it retains all the other characteristics desired in a sword except strength.

I've an older Iaido from Nosyudo. Through hours and hours of training the ito has held up flawlessly.
30年ほど前に、居合を始めるために美濃坂まで電車に乗って買いに行きました。(今でも使っています。)丁寧に作られているので丈夫ですよ。今は有段者なので真剣で演武をしますが素振りの練習にはやはり居合刀がいいですね。
一振何円位で造って頂けるものなのですか
当時の価格で6万円程度でした。今なら8万円くらいでしょうかね。

居合練習刀などの刃潰しは主に樋が入ってる。模造刀はあるやつもあるけど、樋がないのがおおい。これは演舞にいらないから。樋があると居合道などの試合だと、音も判定基準になります。

据えもの切りを居合いだと思っている人がネガティブな事を言ってますね。居合いの形をつけるのに真剣でやったら危ないです。また素人一般が考えているほど日本刀は強くありません。下手をこいたら素振りで日本刀を曲げてしまう人もいますよ。また素振りで目釘が折れて刀身が飛ぶ事故さえ発生しています。居合に真剣を使う人は目釘等も吟味しますし、組太刀刀等は居合い刀で行う人が殆どです。
出来の良い刀程素人が扱うとひん曲げてしまうと聞きました。
アホな身の程知らずな愚か者程浅はかな齧りを玄人ぶってひけらかすのは世の常です。🤷🏻♂️

練習に真剣を使っていたら、鞘が痛みますし、何より自分や他人を傷つけます。
本当の日本刀を使った居合いは、安全を確保された演武ぐらいでめったにやらないはずですよ。
練習用の居合刀の生産が多いと言う事は、それだけ居合を練習している方が多いと言う事ですね、、武道は心身の鍛錬や健康に最適でしょうね。
全剣連居合は4段から練習刀禁止される人多いですね。
稽古時は真剣のみです。
試合も模造刀禁止で、安全確認などあります。
学生や三段まで使っていいけどってやつになりますね

それでも滅多に真剣を使わない様です。
つまるところ、相手を切り殺すのが目的ではなく鞘の内に相手を制するのが目的の様です。それ故に居合術ではなく居合道と道が付くのだと解釈します。
殺せば済む暗殺剣ではなく、相手の邪を打ち俯せてしまう心技と考察します。
多分ですが、抜刀道の事を言ってませんか?抜刀道は真剣を使って切る事を目的にしていますから、居合刀では話になりませんから。

え、うちの行ってた道場めちゃ使ってたよ。なんなら全国大会優勝者しかいない状況やったけど。
大学時代なんか師範が古刀毎回ぶん回して全国大会に備えてたし。
松峰(全剣連居合の裏ボス)ジジイなんか講習会で「真剣使えない奴段落とすから」宣言してその年5段で真剣じゃない奴全員落とされたし、検査入ってた。。
これに関しては、、、マジでわし卒論で出したら、学部の学部長に怒られた。

折り返し鍛錬が無いから刃文も無いが、当時のハイテク鋼やステンレス鋼を使ってミネウチは可能だし、満州や極寒地で折れないし、切れ味や耐久力はそれほど負けて無かったって話ですねー
