- The Ruang volcano in North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, has erupted again, for the second time in the last 2 weeks. On Tuesday, April 30, the volcano erupted three times, spewing lava and ash more than three miles high. Authorities have ordered the evacuation of 12,000 local residents.
According to PVMBG data, volcanic activity on Mount Ruang began to intensify the day before. Nearly 700 earthquakes of various types (small and deep volcanic, local tectonic, etc.) were recorded in the volcano's vicinity.
The eruption threat level on Sulawesi Island was raised to the highest level by Indonesia's geological service. The agency urged residents and climbers to stay at least 3.7 miles away from the volcano's crater.
Volcanic debris from the eruption reached several parts of Tagulandang Island, located approximately 0.62 miles from Mount Ruang, including the emergency response post set up in the village of Apengsala. A local resident shared her experience: "The mountain exploded. It was awful. There was a hail of stones. Twice. Even houses far away were affected."
On Tuesday, Indonesia's geological agency warned Tagulandang Island residents of the possibility of hot volcanic clouds. A potential tsunami warning was also issued in case part of the volcano falls into the sea. A rescue ship and a military vessel were deployed to help relocate thousands of people from Tagulandang Island to the north on Siau Island.
Ash, sand, and rocks fell from the sky in cities and villages across the region, including the provincial capital of Manado, where motorists had to turn on their headlights during daylight hours.
Due to worsening visibility and the danger posed to aviation engines by ash, seven airports were closed, including the major ones in the provincial capital of Manado and the city of Gorontalo.
On Wednesday, May 1, Mount Ruang erupted even more hot clouds. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) shared a map showing volcanic ash reaching the eastern part of Malaysia on the island of Kalimantan. The alert level remains at the highest level of the four-level system. Local residents are asked to stay outside the 4.35-mile exclusion zone.
A few days ago, Indonesia was hit by a strong earthquake. On April 27, off the coast of the Indonesian island of Java, at a depth of 42.4 miles, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 occurred, as reported by the country's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The epicenter was located 63 miles south of the city of Banyar.
According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), 11 people were injured, with six in Garut, three in Bandung, and two in Ciamis. Additionally, 267 houses were damaged.
Skyscrapers swayed in the capital, Jakarta, and in the West Java provincial capital of Bandung, as well as in the satellite cities of Jakarta: Depok, Tangerang, Bogor, and Bekasi. According to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, the earthquake was also felt in other cities in West Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java provinces.
Local authorities are still assessing the damage. The number of casualties and damage continues to rise.
In 2024, MAGMA Indonesia registered 601 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. The majority of eruptions occurred on Mount Semeru in East Java (200 eruptions), while Mount Ruang had eruptions ten times.

Not only dogs, but all animals there could not be transported because the SAR team prioritized evacuating people first, even livestock such as chickens, cows, goats, were just left behind by their owners, they were devastated to have to leave their livestock & pets, but the ships used could not fit even if they only carried people.
