    The founder of the band Tom Scholz had a masters degree from MIT and built a studio in his basement. He also played most of the instruments himself on this album. Man is a musical genius.

  • @elgonwilliams7624
    @elgonwilliams7624 4 года назад +44

    Tom Scholz recorded this largely in a home studio and he played most of the instruments. Some things were added after the original prior to its release, but most of it was done in his house. He was an MIT grad with a Master's degree in engineering. When he signed a deal with a record company he put together a band to tour.

      Tom was a genius with electronics. A lot of that heavy guitar gain was from modding his own Marshall amp. Then layering the tracks in the studio gave it that wall of sound. I don't think any band came close to that explosive guitar sound until the first Boston album. Steven Nelson, that's cool man. Always loved Barry's guitar playing.

  • @craigcook1030
    @craigcook1030 4 года назад +23

    Here's a fun fact. Band founder Tom Scholtz recorded, by his admission, 96% of the album by himself before bringing in Brad Delp to record the vocal tracks. Also, the only song on the album that was recorded in a professional studio, was 'Let me take you home tonight' written and sung by Brad Delp. It was recorded at CBS studios in Los Angeles, unlike the rest of the album which was recorded in the basement studio of Scholtz's Watertown, Massachusetts home, part of the greater Boston area. On a less happy note, Brad Delp, whose amazing vocals will always be associated with the Boston sound, passed away on March 9, 2007, when he took his own life via carbon monoxide poisoning, at his home in Atkinson, New Hampshire. But he will never really be gone. Because every time someone puts on a Boston album and cranks up the volume, his legacy Springs to life, and he is with us once again!

      @neechee5150 10 месяцев назад

      @craigcook1030 I question your claim that Tom claimed to have recorded "96 percent" of this record before Brads vocals were recorded. The entire song Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad was recorded at the Record Plant LA. All of Brads vocals sans Let Me Take YOU Home were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C. That is why the vocal production on this record is far superior to any subsequent Boston record that Brad sang on. Boylan took over recording Brads vocals to make sure that Brads voice was recorded and produced in a manner that is fitting for such a world class once in a generation voice.
      Brad was just not "brought in" to do the vocals. Barry introduced Tom to Brad back in 69/70 and Tom played keyboards in Barry's band. Brad, Barry, Jim Masdea and Tom played in bands together playing Toms songs years before this record was made ,and Barry played on demos which contained early versions of these songs years before the record was recorded. It can not be overlooked that Brad sang vocals on Toms demos years before this record was made as well. When Epic and Boylan heard the demo that Tom submitted, Brads voice was a central part of what would be come known as Boston As an FYI the Band/project was called Mothers Milk before it was changed mid recording process. Brad was signed by Epic as well as a part of Boston and Brad was not just some hired vocalist who was added at the last minute. Brads voice was a key part of the signature Boston sound from the get go and that is what Epic paid for when they signed both Brad and Tom.
      Producer John Boylan gives a much more objective, fair and far less self adulating account of how this record came to be than Tom has ever done. Tom has a habbit of leaving out key facts and obscuring who did what on this record and key contributions of others to this record.

    I've probably listened to this song over 1,000 times in my life but this young lady just described Foreplay/Longtime as a "highway song"! Damn, that is the perfect way to describe the song! Foreplay/Longtime is the type of song that makes normally responsible drivers look down at their speedometers and realize they're doing 97mph as the song is blasting through the speakers in the car! My favorite line in the song: "I've got to keep on chasing that dream................though I may never find it......." @jerryadkins4528 That is urban legend. It is well documented in the liner notes of every copy of this record/CD that has ever been sold that Sib plays drums on all tracks except for one, and Jim Masdea plays drums on that track. Barry plays electric rhythm guitar on Foreplay, Long Time and Let Me Take You Home. Barry also plays the huge power chords in Long Time as well as all of the lead guitar solos in Long Time. Barry also plays lead and slide guitar on Let Me Take You Home.
      The song Let Me Take You Home was written by Brad and it was recorded by the band as pictured on the back of the record. Fran plays bass on Foreplay and Let Me Take You Home. Brad plays acoustic 12 string on Let Me Take You Home.
      Brad was not someone who was brought in at the last moment as a hired gun. Brad had been working with Tom since 1970 and they played in bands together. In addition. Brad sang on Toms demos years before this record was made. Brad sang on the demo that got the attention of Epic and producer John Boylan. When Epic signed "Boston" they signed both Brad and Tom, and Brads amazing voice was a part of the Boston sound from the get go and that is what Epic paid for when they signed Brad. In addition, even though it came 30 years after the fact and after a lot of litigation, Tom finally gave credit to Brad and Jim Masdea for all of the arrangement work that they did on the songs that are on this record. In the post litigation liner notes of the 2006 Scholz remaster (Toms pet project) of the debut record, Tom was forced to be factual regarding who played what on this record.

Boston music so good. They couldn’t handle the 5 albums in 5 years deal with Epic...I was lucky Don’t look back was a year late, I was just getting to the age as a teen to start really digging rock and to start going to concerts that year...cause it was then an 8 year drought and by then I felt 20s was too old, and the party time magic of those ga shows had passed...as well as those 70s to very early 80s NO security inside GA venues themselves were lost to the past

    To think this album was recorded in a garage by one guy... first project was awesome.

      @oakleysmithmusic That is simply not the truth First, Toms home studio was in his basement. Second. there are four people who play one or more instrumental tracks on this record. Also Tom could not sing like that even after the third cold day in hell, and Tom knows this. All vocals were sang by Brad Delp. This has been documented as fact in the liner notes of EVERY record/CD of the debut record that has been sold since Aug 1976.

    I love watchin the youngsters hearing real rock for the first time. So so so many things about this album make it the best ever rock. Tom was a brilliant tech and musician. This is the best rock and roll ever, and the musical score to my highschool years. I was so fortunate.

    one of my favourite songs. another favourite band of mine is ELO, which never gets any love on these reaction channels that i've ever noticed, but yet they're another band with a deep rabbit hole to go down.

    The band that you see in the videos did not record the original album. Here's who did:
    Melody Tom Scholz
    Lyrics Tom Scholz
    Arrangement Tom Scholz
    Lead Guitar Tom Scholz
    Rhythm Guitar Tom Scholz
    Bass Guitar Tom Scholz
    Organ Tom Scholz
    Acoustic Guitar Tom Scholz
    Percussion Jim Masdea
    Vocals Brad Delp
    All recorded in Tom Scholz's basement.
    No synthesizers or computers.
    Scholz has a Masters in Electrical engineering from MIT
    In this video Scholz is in light blue playing lead guitar, the only face you don't get to see.
    BTW Maryann was Scholz's older cousin. He had a crush on her when he was 8.
    You REALLY need to react to Foreplay/Long Time.
    The best-selling debut album for decades.

      @johnfrancis1528 Not quite. There are some serious falsehoods in your post. I will point out a few of them. First Tom has a masters in MECHANICAL ENGINEERING from MIT. Tom worked as a production/mechanical engineer at Polaroid NOT an electrical engineer. Second, this whole record was certainly not all recorded in Toms basement studio. The documentation on this is very clear. All of Brads vocals sans the vocals for Let Me Take You Home were recorded at Capital Studios Studio C by producer John Boylan. The entire song Let Met Take You Home which was written by Brad was recorded at The Record Plant LA by producer John Boylan. Third, Jim only plays on one tune on this record and that tune is Rock and Roll Band. All other drum tracks were played by Sib and this has been documented as fact in the liner notes of every copy of this record/CD that has ever been sold. Fourth, all though not explicitly stated, in 2006 Tom finally gave credit to Brad and Jim Masdea for all of the arrangement work that they did on the songs on this record. Fifth, Fran is playing bass on Foreplay not Tom. Sixth, Barry is playing electric rhythm guitar on both Foreplay and Long Time and Barry is playing the huge power chords in Long Time as well as all of the lead guitar solos on Long Time.
