I DO remember this one. I had just bought a new house and I had bought the Whispers album with "And the beat goes on", my first Whispers album by the way, I hooked up my stereo before anything else, because I was somehow obsessed with "And the beat goes on" - that's how catchy it was at that time, such a clear, crisp sound - loved it. By the way, I lived in northern Sweden at the time - the music travels!

@Danazbiz - My father say's Leon would always track all rythm instrments first- then he would call in other musicians to overdub- But the kick drum was crucial for him to do. My uncle worked as a sound engineer @ Devonshire Recording as well as the famed 1 inch 16 track @ Solar-

PTREZAML: Did you not just hear Nicholas Caldwell himself tell you the story of Leon Sylvers recording the bass drum, down on his knees, for the entire six minutes of the song? Repeatedly?? Dude has no reason to lie, man! Yes, by 1980, there were Linns and Simmonses coming into play, and Scotty is inaccurate when he says that there weren't. But at that time, The Whispers weren't using them. For them, that came a year or two later.

@potrezaml 1. REAL musicians can do it. 2. I've seen some of their sessions and YES people like Leon, Prince and others in those days would go in by themselves and do whole tracks alone. NO DRUM machines. Later on in their recording arsenal drum machines were used along with real drums. Believe it or not. :-)

I doubt there was no drum machine... come on...they all used them -Linn drums and other stuff of the same kind- especially around 1983 to 1987/88; or at least Simmons drums...he can't say that they were no ELECTRONIC drums used in their songs ...there was that kind of hyper fast drum/percussion solos that you can not perform on "real" drum;not even on electronic drums (such as Simmons..) I'm sure they used drum machines...one time at least !
