  • This organic chemistry video tutorial provides a basic introduction into the SN1 reaction mechanism. It explains how to identify the major product and It includes example problems with carbocation rearrangements such as the hydride shift and methyl shift. It discusses the stereochemistry of the SN1 reaction such as the production of an unequal racemic mixture of stereoisomers due to the formation of an ion pair during the ionization of an alkyl halide. It includes many solvolysis reactions with H2O and CH3OH. It discusses substrate reactivity and leaving group stability.

    You should be called "The Organic Chemistry Life Saver" because you literally have been keeping me in school. I would have dropped out if it was not for you, and I'm not even joking.

    Hi, I would like to give some feedback on the recent changes to your channel, I have been watching your videos to get me through from my junior year in HS to university right now, and even though I do think you deserve money for your dedication to helping us hands down- the majority of the students that use your vids don't really have the bank account to support you through those means with Patreon if that makes sense-- until later years. I was happy to support you by watching through the ads but now I can't really do anything because I have officially reached the point of being the stereotypical broke college kid. At least I request for you to not take down previous vids and shortening them because you have no clue how much these have saved my grade so much and many others for sure agree. If you do this then to be honest it takes away the reason why so many drifts to your channel-- because you are thorough and show a variety of examples. By shortening them to only have the basic ones makes it like everyone else's and does the opposite of what you want. Please, please consider this-- I still understand if you continue to go this way but at least please don't take down your old videos and shorten them. Thank you!

      Honestly I've never agreed with something more than this... With college online now, I've been resorting to this channel more than ever, and seeing videos removed and replaced with less complete versions is really disheartening. I feel now more than ever he should be understanding of financial strain, and at least delay this "new marketing tactic" he's pushing until after the pandemic.

    Hi, at 8:10. From step 2 to step 3, the Energy Profile Diagram has shown decrease (endothermic) but during the 3rd step, when OH2+ changes to OH, it becomes more stable and energy is released. So it must be exothermic and the graph must increase at the third transition state.

    I think at 21:49 there's a mistake, because the ability of a compound to give SN1 reaction is measured by the stability of the carbocation that's going to be formed IMMEDIATELY after the removal of the old nucleophile as that is the rate determining step and the rearrangement shouldn't be considered in this case, hence the third compund will show most reactivity to SN1 as the carbocation that's going to be formed will have 5 alpha hydrogens for hyperconjugation stabilization

    14:11 most reactive to sn1
    23:05 best substrate for sn1 and sn2
    24:40 aryl halides and benzyl halides do NOT work for sn1
    25:11 to 26:01 iodide is a better leaving group than bromide as it can stabilize the -ve charge better. larger ions can stabilize a -ve charge better than smaller ions.

    9:10 why did it just grow a random leg and H ?????

    • @nefariouswrld
      @nefariouswrld 3 месяца назад +2

      the h is always there and it is not a random leg, it represents the bond between c and h. the bonds between c and h are often not shown in a line diagram, only the heteroatoms (i.e, atoms other than c and h, like O, N, etc,) are shown differently and named.
