If you are on a time crunch or doing a small project, you can do both sides same day by doing one side first with 20 or 45 minute fast setting compound, wait for it to set then do a really tight and fast skim coat pass over the fast setting to remove any bubbles or just to make it easier to sand. Then you can do the second side with regular joint compound making sure you are not too stiff to the point you dig into the other side you did with fast setting joint compound

So you do both wall and lid at the same time? I keep on piling mud onto the other surface when I try it.
