U2 and Coldplay are my favorite bands, side-by-side. I've always looked at Coldplay as U2's musical proteges in a cultural sense - there's no other young band who's be able to capture the essence of U2 the way they have in my opinion.
Coldplay will be remembered as one of the greatest bands of all time. Who says they haven't got soul?!?!? Watch their live shows and listen to the album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, and tell me they haven't got soul
I was there at Glasto 11. Seen both Coldplay & U2. The power thats comes from U2 live is unreal. It was AWESOME. Pissed down all through their set. It didnt matter. WOW. Biggest band in the world for a reason.....
U2 and COLDPLAY are good friends! COLDPLAY and Chris Martin in particular has always admired U2, and never hid it. COLDPLAY and U2 are two great bands! Bono once said that Chris Martin was a jerk, but soon afterwards said he was just joking and Chris is a good soul. I love both bands, but I prefer COLDPLAY... problem?
@cullyvan Coldplay will definitely be remembered 30 years from now. Their last album was better than U2's last album (and I'm saying that as a die-hard U2 fan!). Listen to their songs Death And All His Friends, Charlie Brown, Strawberry Swing, Lovers In Japan, In My Place and Amsterdam. They are incredible. And although they may struggle writing something as powerful as One or Where The Streets Have No Name, they will definitely be remembered for their timeless music. And Yellow awesome too :)
U2 are very good at what they do. Coldplay are very good at what U2 and Radiohead do. You have to see the big picture. 30 years from now people will still talk about U2, Radiohead, The Beatles, Joy Division and Boards of Canada. They will not talk about Coldplay.
there was torrential rain, the stage was like an ice rink, the crowd were a mile away, but they were still the best band to grace the stage, they nailed it, who cares about taxes? pathetic, we all would pay less tax if we could x
@coldstreet21 thats because their music sounds as fresh today as it did 20 years ago plus they know how to freshen up some songs you dont sell over 7 million tickets if your concerts sound boring. and yes we all have different tastes i would not be a big stones fan but i respect the fact that they are where they are because they deserve it what i may feel about them makes no difference.
i think peole forget that coldplay are only on there fifth album,u2's fifth album was the joshua tree, which i think is where u2 first started to find there feet.so give coldplay massive credit for there achievements so far and i hope they can continue to challange the mighty u2 for many years to come.just six years after joshua tree came the groundbreaking achtung baby,so in six years time hopefully coldplay can have a break down the barriers album aswel, cant wait.
I think the reason a lot of people prefer Coldplay is the mass amount of cliches they use in all of their songs. I just get the feeling U2 puts a lot more soul into their works, making them a little more unorthodox. That being said, I greatly prefer U2
I see what you mean. U2 is just a bunch of love songs mostly to me though. Coldplay is just easy listening. U2 does in fact put more (soul) with maybe sometimes speed and vocals, but I just always felt like Coldplay's albums had all good songs on them, you rarely got tired of them or I to skip them.
@tommywm24 Only just in the LIVE side of creativity. In that aspect everyone is based in U2 but i can pretty much say they have little in common musically. Even when X and Y's musical structures had the same amount of guitar.
@klaos9999 You my friend have obviously NOT listened to U2 then. The only reason Coldplay have been able to change their sound so much in such a short amount of time is because of a band like U2 and Brian Eno. Look at the album they did with Eno called Passengers. Even Radiohead said it inspired them. And do I need to even fucking mention Achtung Baby?? Don't give me bullshit about Edge's guitar playing. Jonny Buckland sounds exactly the same as Edge these days. Ever since X&Y in fact.
although Coldplay have some great songs, U2 will always be better than them for obvious reasons like they have been going for alot longer etc. It still baffles me why people hate on U2 so much, they seem like genuinely nice people.
Totally wrong I'm into a lot of genres Classical, Rock, Metal, R&B and kind of rap. U2 and Coldplay even Radiohead are great in my opinion...free country as they say but also Iron Maiden are brilliant Blink-182, Green Day is fine as well
C'mon! The last time U2 were talking to Jo Whiley about ColdPlay, Bono jokingly called Chris Martin a wanker. Are people getting worked up about Bono teasing his friend and young pretender?
@larryman70 how long does U2 exist pro ;)? just give coldplay the same time and they will fill stadiums this size for sure! just a matter of time I guess!
Does Chris have the range that Bono has? Coldplay has said they greatly admire U2; emulate them in many ways. The Killers seem UK, though. ;-) Coldplay, Muse, The Killers - all have much more to add to their body of work before one can say they are akin to U2. They have promise, but they aren't there now, no way.
So RUclips has a never-ending debate about these two bands. Bono is trigger-happy, and Chris Martin dances on stage. Bono has great lyrics, and Chris Martin has a great skill playing piano and guitar. Bono blah blah, and Chris Martin blah blah. I like both, can anyone else? Or are we going to keep "debating" until RUclips bans Coldplay and U2?
@mayfair999a The thing is, U2 are always going to be critiqued because of Bonos 'Extra curricular Activities' My problem is when people cant separate the man from the music and just enjoy U2 for what they do best.. PERFORM !
Just thinking about those poor u2 band members who have had to see Bono day in day out for over 30 years .. Life sentence ! .. great band though and Bono is a living legend
@lukasmayo I hear you , but its no necessarily just my opinion. The critics hate them. I can see why, everything just seems so half assed with them, they lack soul.
@coldstreet21 as a fan of both bands i think u are missing one point with that argument even though u2 have been around far longer. its their 80s and 90s songs that are main reason they break ticket records today .coldplay compare well with u2s last 4 albums but are not remotely in u2s league when it comes to the 80s and 90s music.. u might as well compare coldplay to the beatles plus bonos voice let martin sing opera to italians in milan. look up miss sarajavo milan martin could never do that.
@FionaBoosh did you even watch their set? I just dont get how someone can say that about a band that has so many classic songs. Or are you being an out and out troll?
@nomardll769 jiv gone to several U2 concerts with my girlfriend and was mainly disappointed with bono's vocals. He sounds horrible live. Now a band like Muse is one of the few bands iv heard live that sound better than they do in their albums. Not only that, but they are quite the performers and their concerts are intense to say the least.
Haha obviously a bit of a sting with their compliments. Like they care about a band that copies them in every way. Don't get me wrong I like Coldplay. But even Coldplay know they are heavily influenced by U2.
@BezerkoTheCow I like U2 and all, my gf loves them, but...idk. I can see Coldplay takin the reigns off U2s hands. Then again they might just both be too similar in my eyes
@imedi I can't understand why people still want to hear the old stuff, it's really kind of boring hearing the same tune again and again!!! I like some songs from U2 but for me they have nothing special, like I see when I watch coldplay, maybe because I grew up with coldplay but that's just my opinion! I respect every comment, that says U2 is better than coldplay, very interesting how different tastes are!
@tommywm24 everyone is influenced by U2 . But each group has a thing that makes them special ! Ootherwise coldplay would not be on the front scene anymore . It's not because you are a coldplay fan that you are necessarly a U2 fan . I don't like U2 I think it's a nice band , do good music etc . But all of their songs are similar . Anyway COLDPLAY is an amazing band , yes they might be influenced by U2 but they are not copy , thaaank god !
@homertime97 Sorry but I (and pretty much everybody I spoke to for the duration of the rest of the festival) thought they were shit. Even people who I bought food off said 'I heard U2 were shit'. In short - they were shit.
well it does. its music for people who dont like to explore, who like everything nice and safe and bland and sterile and non-controversial and soulless. this is not what music should be about, or any type of art. It barely deserves to be called music at all. so : music for people who don't like music.
Do you all see how Chris talks about U2 in the press. Chris has got U2's balls in his mouth constantly. He wants to be the next U2. He actually said this. This right there proves U2 is superior by a long way. Specifically as far as musicality goes, coldplay are complete garbage. But they have some catchy songs that connect to they're market.
@convener777 The difference is that Coldplay want to play for their fans and U2 want to talk politics? That has to be one of the more moronic comments on here. And that's saying something. So those fans filling stadiums around the world for U2 keep coming back because they love hearing about politics? Have you been to a show of theirs? Or even watched one?
@90alexcatalan coldplay have made brilliant music and u2 were around years before coldplay so lets see where coldplay are when they u2s age ...also english bands are crap? The Who , Queen , the Beatles , pink floyd etc etc yeah there really crap arent they
U2 and Coldplay are my favorite bands, side-by-side. I've always looked at Coldplay as U2's musical proteges in a cultural sense - there's no other young band who's be able to capture the essence of U2 the way they have in my opinion.

i love them both sooooooo much they're amazing
Fantastic performance from U2 yet again. I think they answerd their critics tonight . Well done lads !
coldplay and u2 are my favourites bands!
I really love seeing bands talk abou other bands. I don't know why.
I love both bands, but I prefer COLDPLAY... problem?
I love this..I love you Bono, I love U2
U2 is an awesome band....the best in the world. Folks who have a problem with U2 are folks who are jealous....for stupid reasons. Bono is a good man.
Well, I love them both.
U2 banda única...
@cullyvan Coldplay will definitely be remembered 30 years from now. Their last album was better than U2's last album (and I'm saying that as a die-hard U2 fan!). maybe Coldplay is the generations U2? I like both bands, both have great songs
it's not even a subject to discuss...U2 is the best rock band ever to perform up to this time!!! FINAL POINT.
Lol at Bonos face at 2:00. He can't believe it.
U2 are very good at what they do. Coldplay are very good at what U2 and Radiohead do. You have to see the big picture. 30 years from now people will still talk about U2, Radiohead, The Beatles, Joy Division and Boards of Canada. They will not talk about Coldplay.
Love Jo putting Bono in his place at the end.
there was torrential rain, the stage was like an ice rink, the crowd were a mile away, but they were still the best band to grace the stage, they nailed it, who cares about taxes? pathetic, we all would pay less tax if we could x

I love both U2 and Coldplay. Just Coldplay a bit more. They are VERY similair
I prefer U2 to Coldplay.
My dad is into U2 and I'm into Coldplay so concerts tend to work out well. Ps i can't wait to move to europe
I don''t know which is better, U2 or Coldplay, they are quite similar and make the best music at the moment, I don't know :)
i think peole forget that coldplay are only on there fifth album,u2's fifth album was the joshua tree, which i think is where u2 first started to find there feet.so give coldplay massive credit for there achievements so far and i hope they can continue to challange the mighty u2 for many years to come.just six years after joshua tree came the groundbreaking achtung baby,so in six years time hopefully coldplay can have a break down the barriers album aswel, cant wait.
"No, you can't!!!"
And Adam and Larry pissing themselves away... great comedy! Oh Bono, you simply talk too much! :P
I think the reason a lot of people prefer Coldplay is the mass amount of cliches they use in all of their songs. I just get the feeling U2 puts a lot more soul into their works, making them a little more unorthodox. That being said, I greatly prefer U2

Honestly never heard U2, but they must be amazing. But I feel a lot of people hate Coldplay instead of preferring it
Yeah, because U2 is super unique...
Dude....RELAX
@tommywm24 Only just in the LIVE side of creativity. In that aspect everyone is based in U2 but i can pretty much say they have little in common musically. Even when X and Y's musical structures had the same amount of guitar.

wow u2 praising coldplay!!
although Coldplay have some great songs, U2 will always be better than them for obvious reasons like they have been going for alot longer etc. It still baffles me why people hate on U2 so much, they seem like genuinely nice people.
Coldplay: a boy's band; U2: a man's band
@One2three4abc what chris does, we call it polite! He is just polite by saying he wants to be like U2, he knows coldplay is bette ;D
@cullyvan amen to that one brother!
Totally wrong I'm into a lot of genres Classical, Rock, Metal, R&B and kind of rap. U2 and Coldplay even Radiohead are great in my opinion...free country as they say but also Iron Maiden are brilliant Blink-182, Green Day is fine as well
Listen and understand `come original` by 311
Did anyone else think this was going to be U2 covering the song "Talk" by coldplay?
Coldplay is better to me. I like U2 a lot though.
C'mon! The last time U2 were talking to Jo Whiley about ColdPlay, Bono jokingly called Chris Martin a wanker.
Are people getting worked up about Bono teasing his friend and young pretender?
Zane called Larry Dorian. that's funny.
@larryman70 how long does U2 exist pro ;)? just give coldplay the same time and they will fill stadiums this size for sure! just a matter of time I guess!
Bono looks more and more like Peter Andre
Does Chris have the range that Bono has? Coldplay has said they greatly admire U2; emulate them in many ways.
The Killers seem UK, though. ;-)
Coldplay, Muse, The Killers - all have much more to add to their body of work before one can say they are akin to U2. They have promise, but they aren't there now, no way.
Awwweh!
So RUclips has a never-ending debate about these two bands. Bono is trigger-happy, and Chris Martin dances on stage. Coldplay are Coldplay. Let's not get involved in the age-old RUclips debate that everyone is the same as everyone else.
@mayfair999a The thing is, U2 are always going to be critiqued because of Bonos 'Extra curricular Activities'
My problem is when people cant separate the man from the music and just enjoy U2 for what they do best.. PERFORM !
Just thinking about those poor u2 band members who have had to see Bono day in day out for over 30 years .. Life sentence ! .. great band though and Bono is a living legend
look at the body language of the band sitting around Bono...
@lukasmayo I hear you , but its no necessarily just my opinion. The critics hate them. I can see why, everything just seems so half assed with them, they lack soul.
best bands in the world right now:
1. U2 (will lose the title soon)
2. Muse
3. Coldplay
Bono has a hard time giving a compliment.
u2 is grandfather, coldplay , the killers, oasis, .... grandsons
Bono ..pissed out of his brains lol!!
Guy Berryman (Coldplay's bassist) is more handsome than all the members of U2 combined.
Am I supposed to pick a side or...keep in the middle ground?
@Mrguitarlover11 um sorry sir but I just realized that I think you are awesome
today coldplay is even bigger than U2!!!
@coldstreet21 as a fan of both bands i think u are missing one point with that argument even though u2 have been around far longer. its their 80s and 90s songs that are main reason they break ticket records today .coldplay compare well with u2s last 4 albums but are not remotely in u2s league when it comes to the 80s and 90s music.. u might as well compare coldplay to the beatles plus bonos voice let martin sing opera to italians in milan. look up miss sarajavo milan martin could never do that.
omg your life must be horrible without the pleasure of coldplay in it! :O
Coldplay are miles better than U2!
you should
Haha obviously a bit of a sting with their compliments. Like they care about a band that copies them in every way. Don't get me wrong I like Coldplay. But even Coldplay know they are heavily influenced by U2.
how camp was that !?
@ham123see haha well said!
I prefer Coldplay to U2
@BezerkoTheCow
I like U2 and all, my gf loves them, but...idk. I can see Coldplay takin the reigns off U2s hands. Then again they might just both be too similar in my eyes
@Telepian lol, it would have been a Bono solo then
bono had a few beers so what,,didnt everyone else do the same there,,
@MWT0816 You're being ironic when you say that arent you? Seriously, you meant that as a joke right?! What was that phrase that john mcenroe said?
@whenthewallscomedown i never said thath its metaphoric :P
@IWishTodayWas2days His strong accent? I think a buying you a hearing aid would help you much more than a transcription.
maybe its me, but does bono sound pissed??
sounds like he's binned here
Sheesh, the whole video is Bono talking... -___-... ;D
@imedi I can't understand why people still want to hear the old stuff, it's really kind of boring hearing the same tune again and again!!! U2 are a better studio band and Coldplay are a better live band in my opinion
@tommywm24 everyone is influenced by U2 . But each group has a thing that makes them special ! Ootherwise coldplay would not be on the front scene anymore . Anyway COLDPLAY is an amazing band , yes they might be influenced by U2 but they are not copy , thaaank god !
@lukasmayo - your dead right - u2's last album was not good but even the beatles made a few crap ones...
@flippermost there are worst things in the world to be bothered about and i'm pleased he moralises better than being an empty vacuous hole x
@tommywm24 And you thing U2 is orignally? Ha-Ha....
biatch interrupted Bono? really? I got a white bunny rabbit that wants a talk a' her...."It's just a bunny rabbit!"
You mad, Brono?
Are you kidding me?
@homertime97 Sorry but I (and pretty much everybody I spoke to for the duration of the rest of the festival) thought they were shit. Even people who I bought food off said 'I heard U2 were shit'. In short - they were shit.

@Beatles5thmember woah chill out! Just an opinion... Radiohead just isn't my style...
@laboloche I guess that makes U2 dreadfully shit when you judge both of them on their glastonbury performances. Say no more...
Jesus that was rude...
@coldstreet21 You're a muppet if you believe that.
Coldplay... Mix with u2 and radiohead. All these new bands have no original style of thier own.
oh god vikram whats wrong with you
@convener777 The difference is that Coldplay want to play for their fans and U2 want to talk politics?
That has to be one of the more moronic comments on here. And that's saying something. So those fans filling stadiums around the world for U2 keep coming back because they love hearing about politics? Have you been to a show of theirs? Or even watched one?

very pity because you stay alone
I was expecting more from u2. disappointing.
