The revised edition of the two western sets not only have better pieces, replaced cards but also have a much better rule book and adventure book. Replaced many cards to have better understanding of the rules. Also improved the balance of several characters. You can download The revised rule book and adventure book from Flying Frog‘s main site for free! Just print it in black-and-white or best color at Kinko’s or something. It’s much better than the first one! I’ve worked with both of them it’s much better to have the new revised books. There’s downloads for adventure book and rulebook for each of the sets. You can also download these as a PDF and have them on your Kindle etc. I’ve played at Dicefest as well and I highly recommend that. They will be doing an online Dicefest (named something else) every year as well continue an in person Dicefest when Covid lets them. These are great videos! Thank you !
I love playing as Taddeus and Pious Vorne in Blackstone Fortress. I just ordered the Dark Apostle models just to have a counterpart to them. Going to use them in Assassinorum Execution Force as proxies for the Chaos Sorcerer Lord and Familiar.
I have recently acquired the revised core sets. The miniatures are better looking but still not GW quality. The best thing about them is that they are for the most part 1 piece. Occasionally 2 or 3 but most of them you just glue them to the base and that's it. It has the updated rulebook with all the errata so it's the definitive ruleset for now. That said there are some changes as well. For instance the church no longer sells the holy book, so the redemptionist preacher can no longer buy it. In exchange he starts with a special shotgun that gives him extra faith. The church also sells the demon rogu bag for preachers too. I'm sure there are more changes but I sold the old version of Swamps of Death over a year ago. I only noticed those things because preacher is my favourite character :)
I'm jazzed about the extra priest spells deck that is new. That character is really fleshed out and an option for players who are into more strategy and choices in their game.
Man, you really inspired me with your videos ! I'm actually trying to recreate a Warhammer Quest like with all my Descent v2 stuff. 200+ dungeon cards in four environnement ! For now it works quite well but need a little moore events on the cards when revealing the next tile (25% with events, and I plan to go on 50%). Thx for all your great series on thoose games !
@@TheDungeonDive The cards for Descent v2 and only for what i got. But it's all in french. 4 environments (dungeon, forest, lost ruins and deserted city) with cards to pass from one to another deck. Maybe if I buy descent v1 i'll make the cards for it cause it's not to expansive. When it will be done maybe i'll translate it and post it on BGG. Thx angain, because your vidéos on Warhammer Quest are really helping !
@@jstutz Hey ! It's in french for now but the cards with the tile's number are playable in any language. Just sleeve them with a MTG card in the middle and enjoy ! boardgamegeek.com/filepage/218519/descent-quest
Interesting series, enjoyed SOB but on deciding which old school type of warhammer quest game to keep I opted for Darklight Momentum Mori, preferred the theme.
Ok I'm in. Thanks to other members of the community, I'm on the hunt for the starter sets. Kickstarters are not getting backed. Cult of the 'existing' is now in force :)
Thanks for all these videos I’m just starting to get into Shadows of Brimstone and have bought one core set (swamp of doom revised set). If I later on want to explore the Targa plateau do I have to buy the city of ancients set as well or can I just buy expansions that feature Targa?
@@TheDungeonDive ty :) I’ve just bought the ancient city revision one starter as a ding and dent copy from FFP site at $50. As already have revised swamp of death figured it wouldn’t hurt at that price.
Great video. Question I see that each hero in the adventure book has an upgrade path and a detailed explanation of their character. When you buy the hero packs that are available like say the Orphans or the Drifter the boxes look small, do they have this information as well as they do in the adventure books?
I think the basic missions are more like an intro, for learning the game. If you are a new player and the respective set is your only one, it is nice to have a robust set of baic missions. Only the advanced player might have the problem of samey basic mission design, but then, he probably has enough other missions anyway. Just a thought.
Right. But each set should have it's own unique basic missions to play. I have ZERO problem with including basic missions. The problem I mentioned is that they included the exact same ones in each core set.
I just bought city of ancients, I want to add more enemy variety. Would I get more bang for my buck with derelict spaceship or blasted wastes instead of getting swamp of death? My main goal is to have more enemy variety not so much as over complicate the game.
@@TheDungeonDive I couldn't resist I got derelict. I love event horizon and stuff like that 😀 I gotta be careful though I always front-load expansions before even palying the core. I did it with dark souls and zombicide. But enemy variety is a big deal for me. I hate fighting the same things over and over again.
Im really struggling to decide to invest in sod or lod. I want overland travel with encounters, dungeon crawl, city/village play and cool hero progression. Nice pre written quests and campaigns are cherry on top. I preffer the setting of sob but its so vast and with a bazillion expansions and a tacked on (even if its good) hexcrawl. Also the mechanics seem very old and almost pure luckfest. I like A LITTLE bit of tactics and teamplay. Lod seems tighter, streamlined and more modern in mechanics..
Shame that is so hard to buy this game in Italy! Postage from ffp webstore is 90USD! And italian resellers go with crazy prices. Hope you can give us some gameplay!
Thanks for this series! I am always interested to see a deep dive of SOB. This is really the spiritual successor to WHQ in my opinion but is there anything like the Roleplay book? I know there are travelling / town phase but what about DM mode. Even fan made materials would be interesting to see.
There’s nothing I know of but it would be super simple to do. The RP rules in WHQ are really only about 10 pages long and could easily be applied to SOB, and all of the monster stats are on the monster cards in SOB and not in the book. The only real difference is that SOB doesn’t come with a pre-made adventure.
Check out 'Hexcrawl' on Board Game Geek. It's a fan made supplement that is HUGE and fleshes out the world through tons of random events, side quests, hex travelling etc. I've read that some people have turned it into a full blown RPG with a DM. It work well and really require little prep from anyone to run since so much is generated. Easily the best fan made supplement of any game that I've used. Staggering amount of work was put into it.

Thanks for this info. I'm looking at stepping into the SoB world so I'll look for the revised editions.
Loving this series I feel there is a lack of shadows of brimstone content on youtube when you consider how much game is available...
Well, you’re in luck! This series is going to be LONG. :).
Totally loving this! Thanks for doing this series. Likewise psyched to hear about various house rules.
Thanks for watching!
I love playing as Taddeus and Pious Vorne in Blackstone Fortress. I just ordered the Dark Apostle models just to have a counterpart to them. Going to use them in Assassinorum Execution Force as proxies for the Chaos Sorcerer Lord and Familiar.
The miniatures in the revised editions are excellent and require very little assembly.

As you read the fluff text on the box everytime you pause I keep saying "Bravestarr!".
Bravestarr. Loved that show as a kid. That was maybe my first introduction to a weird west.
