  • If fasting has been around since the beginning of time, why is it so controversial? Dr. Jason Fung has a different perspective. When done right, fasting should not be controversial at all. In fact, it should be one of our most powerful tools for treating insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, obesity and diabetes. He also believes insulin resistance has an even further-reaching impact on our health affecting our risk of cancer and our chance for longevity. As the foremost expert on fasting, Dr. Fung has a perspective we can all learn from.

Dr. Fung, Your work is changing so many lives. There might be no interest in PCOS from academia or the drug companies, but there is a huge interest from all of the heart broken women out there struggling with infertility.
I was diagnosed with PCOS at 14 and told that the best treatment was birth control. If I wanted kids, it would probably be impossible, since I only got one menstrual cycle every year or two, but I could try fertility treatments when I was ready.
Fast forward to my mid 20s. I found your work and read “The PCOS Plan.” I started doing one meal a day and in 10 months, I lost 100lbs and started getting regular menstrual cycles for the first time. I’m currently 8 months pregnant with a little boy who I conceived naturally on the first try! Thank you for everything!

@@lailab4147 I have definitely reduced my carb intake, but I still let myself enjoy the foods I like from time to time. I still eat rice, bread, fruit, etc. I just try to make that the smallest portion on my plate. Most of my plate should be meat and veggies.
For sweet treats, I try to use liquid stevia with no added sweeteners (check the ingredients) or monk fruit/ erythritol to make sweet teas, coffees, ice creams, whipped cream etc. I’ve sort of gotten to the point now where my body isn’t used to sugar, so if I eat regular sweets, I get a headache, so that’s a pretty good deterrent for me.
I mostly rely on fasting to keep my insulin levels down. I find it easier to eat what I want, in reasonable portions once a day than to not get what I want but eat multiple times a day.
I had my baby last month and I’m back on OMAD again and I’m feeling great! I can’t wait to get the baby weight off.

I'm from the other side of the fence. I listened to a bunch of other figures first, before encountering Jason Fung. I agree, he inserts a lot of pedestrian perspective, to help people get on the bandwagon, and that's where the fence is. Others (Peter Attia, Rhonda Patrick, Bret Scher, Dave Feldman) can be unapologetically technical.

@@wearashirt Exactly. While I consider myself an educated layman when it comes to matters of health and science in general, Dr. Peter Attia and Dr. Rhonda Patrick can overwhelm a lot of scientifically well versed laymen with the level of scientific detail that they explore in their respective podcasts and interviews. While I appreciate the depth of their knowledge, in order to reach a broader audience, the plainspoken and accessible style of Dr. Fung tends to be the best route.

Dr. Jason Fung is my hero! I started a keto diet in February of this year (recommended by my doctor), and have since lost 50 pounds. I've been watching his videos for inspiration since the beginning, and started 16/8 intermittent fasting around April. It felt like a natural transition.
Last month, I finally read his book, "The Obesity Code," and everything else fell into place. No more guilt about being a "lazy person" all my life, because now I know the factor that hormones played to get me where I was in February. Dr. Fung has given me the knowledge and tools to counter those hormones!
Now, if I have a stressful day and the though of a sweet treat pops into my head, I know it's not me that craves the treat; it's the cortisol talking. Then I simply tell cortisol to piss off. LOL! If I have a family event and eat off plan, I simply fast the next 24 hours to get back on track.
    Thank you, Dr. Fung!

@@ayyb6789 The precise hours are since it's based on the lunar calendar is, sunrise to sunset will be your fasting hours. Dr. Mosely based his research on this and wrote a book called the "alternate day fasting" or commonly known as 5/2 Diet.
This is "dry" fast so no water or food whats so ever. Muslims also do Ramadam once a year for a full month.
Now my advice to you is this, if you want to lose weight and be healthy, do not do the 5/2 diet which says to eat 500 calories during the fasting days (this will make you very hungry). Do What Dr. Jason Fung advises, One Day A Meal or OMAD as it's known. You can apply it to Mon and Thursday and you will benefit from it. Then you will be so happy with the results that you could do it 7 days a week and eventually move onto eating whole foods such as in Keto diet and there you have a lifestyle change that will bring you a LOT of health benefit.

    • @kimberlycooper4170

All that a person needs to do for a liver cleanse is to do a water fast. That allows the body to use up any fat that's stored in the liver, pancrease, other organs, abdomen, and subcutaneous fat cells. When the fat is removed, the liver, pancrease, and other body parts can do the jobs they have evolved to do. Drinking tea and coffee is ok, too, on the fast. Go to Jason Fung's Intensive Dietary Management website for all the details if how to do the fast.
To clean out the gallbladder, eat sufficient fats when you do eat. When we eat fats, the body triggers the gallbladder to release the stored bile into the intestine so that the fat can be digested. If we don't eat sufficient animal fats, the bile stays in the gallbladder and can form gallstones. Ask Dr. Fung for information about how to get rid of the gallstones. He probably has had plenty of patients who had gallstones. Don't eat the seed-oil fats: corn, vegetable, canola, sunflower, etc. Read "The Big Fat Surprise" by Nina Teicholz to find out why. Instead, eat the fruit oils (coconut, olive, and avocado) and the animal fats.

The gyne have no idea. I was on spironolactone for 20 years for hormonal acne. Too much androgen. Why? The doctors didn't know. Well it turns out that high blood pressure causes high androgens and high blood pressure os often caused by high insulin. So when I did alt day fasting, it dropped my insulin and the acne disappeared in 3 days after plaguing me my entire adult life. When I told my gyne, she looked at me like I had sprouted horns.
If doctors stay smug and stupid, Dr. Google is going to kick their butts and make them irrelevant. Dr. Fung is a rare gem. A doctor actually interested in fixing the problem, not managing it.

This is so fascinating....I listen while I paint - I am now a full-time artist as I lost the job I had just begun with British Airways last year. It is amazing how much I’m learning. I have now stopped eating sugar, white flour etc and have a low carb diet which has transformed my digestive system completely! No more tummy ache, IBS, uncomfortable feelings after eating etc. I’m 51 yes old. I am super focused on producing more paintings than I ever imagined! Nutritional education is something that seriously needs to be completely re understood by everyone. It needs to be taught far more thoughtfully and thoroughly in medical school and in schools generally. We need to wise up to the power of advertising all the wrong food and the power of big pharmaceuticals selling drugs we perhaps don’t need. Perhaps we should eat like our ancestors did? Perhaps it all went wrong with the advent of farming years ago? Why did we need to start growing grains etc if we were actually healthier on a low-carb diet? Is it all about money? Probably. Interesting thought. 🎨

I had boils , infections inside my nose, nasal dripping and continuous sore throat for the last 3 years. Doctors were not sure why antibiotics were not working or my boils are not healing. I have seen numerous doctors and different types of specialists to find cure to my chronic illness. I was also very tired and weak because of the continuing infections. In the last month my eyes started to hurt a lot and I was having major headaches. I also had sone symptoms like frequent urinating and feeling hungry all the time, gaining weight , feeling sleepy after lunch or dinner and they were getting worse each year. I was still pretty thin because I ‘m always careful about what I eat. When my eyes hurt even more after using some antibiotics that was it for me . I stopped taking antibiotics and started doing OMAD and low carb diet. ( I still eat some fruits everyday ) I m doing one day 19-20 hours next day 25-26 hours IF . It’s been only a week now and I am feeling so much better. I feel like 70 percent of my infections are gone. My eyes stopped hurting on the 2 nd day or so and getting better each day. I will eat this way for a month and will switch to omad everyday and fast for 26 -28 hours once a week. I might do IF in some days 16:8 or 18-6 depending on my schedule but I want to do mostly omad with 22:2 . I feel less weak and much less sick righr now. It also helped me with the mood swings . I feel happier. I am pretty sure I was prediabetic. I was already diagnosed for having hypoglycemia in 2010. Doctors told me to eat every 3 hours. I did it and it made me feel much worse. Now I am hoping to cure myself completely with OMAD.

You can eat oil if it’s healthy oil, e.g. coconut oil, safflower oil, organic butter. And actually you don’t need that much water. 2-3 cups a day is fine. More people die of too much water as it flushes out your nutrients. The body isn’t made out of 70% water. The ‘liquids’ in our body are blood, minerals, Electrolytes.

as a nurse I worked for an endocrinologist and we had quite a few patients that learned they could decrease or eliminate all together their type 2 diabetes meds by eating a low carb high fat diet. that was a few years ago and now the empirical knowledge has opened the doors to the Keto, Carnivore diet and Intermittent fasting with great and remarkable results for many people with much less hunger. what the country needs now is real science to promote our best health, not the antiquated, junk science that got us here, with the standard American diet, in the first place. we have to get Big Agra and its money out of our nutrition politics. and while we're at it, lets get Big Pharma's money and junk science out of vaccines, too. we're entering another period of scientific enlightenment, hopefully.

Dr Fung adds sanity to the question of living healthier. Fasting is not a diet. It is regulating when you eat, not what you eat. But you can choose to change your diet in addition to fasting. I have been fasting for about 6 months, eating only between 12 noon and 6pm. I am still losing weight (181-162lbs) and feeling pretty well. Start slow and adjust your fasting to get the results you want. It is free and even cheaper because you might be spending less for food.

Dr Fung started it all for me back in 2016. I owe my health and beauty to his teaching on ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. I can't thank him enough for his fridge-freezer video!

22 pounds (10 kg) down so far doing a combination of full day fasts and OMAD (always breakfast). Weekends eat and drink whatever. I'm at about 4 kg (8.8 pounds) from my ideal weight. 1 kg (2.2 pounds) avg. weight loss per week.

I notice when I fast my muscles get bigger and harder and then when I am not fasting they are more fluffy and squishy. I see the change without exercise. MY skin is like new after years of fasting doing 24 or 72 hours.

Growth hormone and dumping inflammation makes me so much stronger with fasting.

So true! When I workout on a fast I feel the response, the “lift” feels better! I honestly think I gain more during my fast than non fasting workouts

HGH increases after 36 hour of fasting.. Hence you get more gains, same with taking creatine and melatonin which spikes your HGH levels. However melatonin can cause joint pain in people with auto immune disorders.

Great Video. Thanks, Dr. Fung. I have all your books and I got hooked onto fasting. You are so right that today it is considered normal to eat every two hours. Even the trainers at the gym - new graduates from school - learn that 3 meals are vital and that snacks are beneficial for the blood sugar. By the way, when you said "I should have zero muscle" ....in response to claims of fasting opponents, I had to grin. You are sooo right.
