My great grandparents were born and raised in the neighboring Big Island and Maui. You did a wonderful service to our Kanaka Maoli’ community and families. My youngest sister’s middle name is Ka’iulani. She’s named after the Princess Ka’iulani. As a Polynesian man from Hawai’i who married another Polynesian from American Samoa we share our cultures, traditions and customs. I commend your dedication to teaching other non-Hawaiians about our history from its inception. Not many people can understand and do what you did. There's an image in the last video in the series (episode 4) where the Hawaiian flag was lowered for the last time. It made me cry...it was just so *wrong*. Emma Coe was the daughter of a Samoan Princess, and, Jona Coe of the USA. She was known as Queen Emma. That’s not what the mahele was but the outcome still happened as explained. Just for different reasons. The Mahele was for natives not foreigners. And all land was still vested in perpetuity to the King for the natives. Foreigners could only lease land. Mahele was an effort of the King to preserve land for natives, especially given that the rules of international relations at the time gave respect for private land owners. So if a country was to take over the government, the natives rights to their land was still intact. Mahele was NOT successful as much as it should have because various reasons. Understanding from the natives is a reason, but so was the need to travel from far distances in order to register for land. Hawaiians always owned land, otherwise why would anyone claim it was stolen. The concepts and responsibilities of ownership was different in the mind of Natives vs Foreigners.
