  • A princess in training, a surfing legend, Dr. Jekyll, and Sherlock Holmes. Bet you didn't expect those last two...
    This is the second installment in the story of Princess Ka‘iulani of Hawai‘i. In this episode, we see what happens when the white planters challenged Ka‘iulani's uncle, King Kalākaua...and won. With a kingdom changing before their eyes, Kalākaua and her father Archie sent Ka‘iulani to England for her education.
    When the king gave her permission to leave the country, he specified that she was to come home in 1890. But that’s not what happened. Not by a long shot. By the time she set foot on Hawaiian soil again, she was a worldwide celebrity...and a player in the fight for her country’s survival.
    But how do you learn to be a queen? And what do you do when your destiny seems out of reach...over 7,000 miles away? And what the heck does Sherlock Holmes have to do with this? Maybe nothing...but we should ask Ka‘iulani's father to be sure. Check out the chapter "Father Knows Best" for that little tidbit. ;)
    Stay tuned for part 3, where we see the second of her mother Likelike's deathbed predictions come true.

    Pronunciations
    ==============
    I studied for hours before recording and did my best to pronounce Hawaiian names and places. I even made an audio supercut cheat-sheet of pronunciations to study clipped from interviews, broadcasts, podcasts, and more. I'm afraid I'll never get "Kalākaua" right, despite hours and hours of attempting it and re-recording. Out of respect for the Hawaiian language and what its native speakers have been through, I'm determined to keep trying. I apologize for anything I got terribly wrong.

    ABOUT THE GIRL IN THE TIARA
    ==========================
    I tell stories about fascinating royal women. Join me as I follow these women and their jewels across generations and countries, through wars and revolutions and - sometimes - into darkness and disappearance and destruction.
    This isn't the kind of history your professor lectured about. Instead, think of this as conversational history, like a mash-up of Drunk History and The Crown. Yes, there's a little swearing. There's also humor and heart and a boatload of compassion for these amazing royal women.
    ABOUT ME
    =========
    I never intended to start a channel or a website about tiaras and royal history. But a midlife crisis forced me to re-examine my life. I gave up fiction writing after self-publishing 9 of the 10 books I'd written and earning next to nothing.
    Instead of the misery of marketing books, I turned to my first love...royal history. So here I am, a 40-something burnout, trying to start over by recapturing her love of history, royal women, and their jewels.

    Of all the princesses you have covered in your videos, Ka'iulani is the only one I knew about beforehand. I've been fascinated by her story since I was a kid when my parents gave me the picture book biography "The Last Princess" by Fay Stanley and Diane Stanley. In high school, I read a full-length biography of Ka'iulani, but I think it was a pretty old one. I haven't been able to find any recent full-length biographies of the princess, so I really appreciate all the work you put into these videos.

      Thank you so much! I didn't intend to go so far in depth, but once I started reading about her, there was just more and more I wanted to tell you about her. I was able to find a handful of biographies - some of them available to read for free online via archive.org, so that helped, too. There's a link in the description with sources, so if you wanted to find those books, you can. I'm so glad you're enjoying this series! 💜

    This has been a hard one to watch. I'm a descendant of four of the Samoan Royal Family's. We're going through this in American Samoa. Land battles, and, corporations are abusive trying to use us. I despise it all.

      It's so nice to meet you (virtualIy). This is such a sad story...I'm so sorry to hear the same thing is happening in American Samoa. Although, after researching this series, I'm not surprised. There were so many points where I just had to stop because I was either too angry or too sad to keep going. It's terrible. It's wrong. And I hope by telling this story, more people realize what happened back then...and how awful it was (and is) for the people of Hawai‘i. Thank you for sharing - although I wish it were because of better circumstances. 💜

      @@TheGirlintheTiara I can imagine. It is a hard story to watch let alone tell. You did such a fabulous job though. I love all of your stories. Actually I have one for you. Queen Emma Coe of Samoa, and, Papua New Guinea. She used to parlay with Princess Kaiulani, and, Robert Lewis Stevenson in Hawaii(according to legend) who later would live in Samoa until his death.
      Check it out 🌴🌺🤙

      Please stand up against these or u will be taken out of your right to ur inheritance. THE LAND, ur treasured gift.
      Majority of the Hawaiian don't know, that Hawaii is still a KINGDOM. It's been decades, I'm almost 70yo and learning this. Never give up ur native tongue. Three generations of my ohana do not speak Hawaiian. Thankfully, my son learned and does speak, my mo'opuna's does too. So, I'm learning it today. And it's hard. But it's never to late.
      Never give up on learning anything.
      Stay abreast of your homelands situation...right the wrong. These are yours and not the foreigners. Money will be the culprit. How weak man can be when money is in the mix? Pray hard, diligently, God hears your heart. God speed.

      Thank you so much! I didn't learn any of this in history class, either. The more I learned, I was like, "Whaaat? That did NOT just happen." So this is more in-depth coverage than I normally do, but there was no good way to tell the story without all the background, too. I'm so glad you're enjoying the series! 💜

I got a little obsessed during the research phase and wanted to tell as much of this story as possible...hence the 4 videos! The story hasn't gotten there yet, but you can trace all the invasions and occupations since Hawaii right back to the overthrow of the sovereign nation of Hawaii. There has never been a treaty of annexation. Ka'iulani's story represents the story of the Hawaiian nation. This hauoli woman has done
    a great service to the telling of this important story. Mahalo.

    Please....King Kamehameha brutally conquered the Hawaiian Islands stealing the land from the chiefs of each island....everybody acts like that's ok...if Hawaii had not become an American state I guarantee another nation would have conquered Hawaii either.peacefully or by force....just like native american tribes were conquering eachother for hundreds.of years before being conquered by USA....before American missionaries came to Hawaii, native Hawaiians did not have a written language it was American missionaries that helped create a written Hawaiian language...without literacy you would only have oral traditions and you would be unable to have a clear written record of your history, there would be no higher education...no engineering, No written history....we can't live in the past..its not real.
    As much as any of us might wish to return to the past it is a fantasy in the mind....it is a delusion not reality...time is always moving forward...the past is gone it will never return...the present is all you have.......if you were to protest King Kamehameha you would have been slaughtered. It is because you have a right to freedom of speech.protected by the USA 🇺🇸 constitution that you are able to legally protest against the USA 🇺🇸 Government...while living in the 🇺🇸....like it or not Hawaii is 🇺🇸..FACTS.... Lets be honest....Hawaii was in the stone age before the westerners 🇺🇸 came and taught you how to read and write, do mathematics engineering, business, science....without western 🇺🇸 civilization you never would have received education, literacy technology...I'm not trying to be mean I'm just speaking the truth.....please stop glorifying the Kapuu system where ALL the land was owned by the King and all of the nstive Hawaiian people were his indentured servants...SLAVES...the western system 🇺🇸 has endured this long because it has been more functional than primitive, stoneage society....high tech is superior to stoneage tech....the irony is all of the technology you use in everyday life came from other countries...change is inevitable haoles are here to stay 🇺🇸 🇺🇲
