  • A famous fire, a secret engagement, and a fateful ride.
Welcome back! This is the fourth and final installment in the story of Princess Ka‘iulani of Hawai‘i.
When we last left Ka‘iulani, she was still in Europe - hoping there was a way to bring back the Hawaiian monarchy. But when even the president of the United States, Grover Cleveland, failed to achieve that goal, she realized it was time to move on.
Her father joined her in Europe, where the two of them lived a nomadic life - drifting between Menton, Paris, London, and Scotland. Along the way, she made friends, found a "Father Confessor," and had a killer headache that actually saved her life.
But eventually, she and her father realized their place was in Hawai‘i.
When she left, she was a girl of thirteen. Now, she was a young woman of 22. Things could never - would never - be the same.
For starters, there was endless drama over her love life. What happened between her and her hanai cousin, Kawānanakoa, if anything? We'll dive into the controversy surrounding their purported engagement and see how her aunt, Dowager Queen Kapi‘olani, affected the outcome.
We'll also see what happens when the winds of war shift America's attention to Spain - or, to be more accurate, the Philippines (a Spanish possession at the time). The Spanish-American War changed everything for Hawai‘i, cementing its future and destroying all hopes for the return of the monarchy.
With no future as the ruler of her country, we'll see Ka‘iulani drift into fatalism - wondering what purpose her life serves and whether she matters. We'll see that fatalism affect her behavior and contribute to her early death.
The end of our story is a tear-jerker - it gets me every time. Fair warning, you guys. Have a tissue at hand.

I studied for hours before recording and did my best to pronounce Hawaiian names and places. I even made an audio supercut cheat-sheet of pronunciations to study clipped from interviews, broadcasts, podcasts, and more. I'm afraid I'll never get "Kalakaua" right, despite hours and hours of attempting it and re-recording. Out of respect for the Hawaiian language and what its native speakers have been through, I'm determined to keep trying. I apologize for anything I got terribly wrong.

👑 ABOUT THE GIRL IN THE TIARA
    ----------------------------------------------------
I tell stories about fascinating royal women. Join me as I follow these women and their jewels across generations and countries, through wars and revolutions and - sometimes - into darkness and disappearance and destruction.
This isn't the kind of history your professor lectured about. Instead, think of this as conversational history, like a mash-up of Drunk History and The Crown. Yes, there's a little swearing. There's also humor and heart and a boatload of compassion for these amazing royal women.
    👧🏻 ABOUT ME
    -------------------
I never intended to start a channel or a website about tiaras and royal history. But a midlife crisis forced me to re-examine my life. I gave up fiction writing after self-publishing 9 of the 10 books I'd written and earning next to nothing.
Instead of the misery of marketing books, I turned to my first love...royal history. So here I am, a 40-something burnout, trying to start over by recapturing her love of history, royal women, and their jewels.

This series was done so beautifully. I was crying by the end. You honored her and the Hawaiian people with such a lovely tribute. It breaks my heart knowing what white Americans (and other prominently white nations) did to this beautiful culture because of their greed and “superior” view of anything they saw as different.

Oh, I'd love to see a video of your trip to Hawai‘i! I'm so glad you'll get to see the place where so much of Ka‘iulani's life story happened. There's a portrait of her hanging in the lobby of the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani hotel, too - the hotel is near the site of ʻĀinahau, her home. 💜 Thank you so much for watching this series all the way through. I'm so grateful to everyone who came with me on this journey, all 4 episodes worth.

Mahalo for this four part series. There’s so much history surrounding kai’u’s life but you’ve truly consolidated the information. Women have played such crucial roles in the history of our world. Very much so with the storied history of Hawaii and the Kanaka Maoli.
You are blessed with the voice of a storyteller and the sensitivity of one who is loving. Mahalo for who you are and what you do. You keep all our histories current for all of us to learn and remember.

America is still doing this. After deposing all the native Indian tribes they went for Hawaii. The Monroe Doctrine, the Doctrine of Discovery and all the white supremacy propaganda leads us to think we can control the world. Iraq, Afghanistan, and So/Central America andAfrica. We want to own it all.

There were tears in my eyes for the last 10 minutes of the video as it became clear that the fourth and last of these superlative videos would not end well for Ka'iulani, her people or her country. This story should be tought to American school children as a lesson on how there country finagled the annexation of Hawai'i and stole control from the native Hawaians. My country did similar things all over the world but we began owning up to it over 60 years ago. Once again I commend you for your hard work and diligence in making this story known. Brava!

Aww, thank you, Gerry. Your comments always bring a smile to my face. There were tears in my eyes while I was writing this segment - and the picture of the Hawaiian flag coming down for the last time really got to me. It's that picture more than anything that makes me cry when I think about this story. I never learned anything about this in school (in California in the 80s and 90s). All I knew was that Hawai‘i was a U.S. territory before it was a state - they never talked about how it had become a territory. When I found out, while researching this series, I couldn't believe the lies and treachery that were behind it all. Both of our countries have a lot to answer for. I hope this story helps others understand what happened and what a horrible thing the U.S. did to Hawai‘i. I'm so glad you enjoyed this series, as sad as its ending may have been. 💜

I am very grateful for your support and your help with the making of this project. I watched all four episodes and I just couldn’t stop thinking about my home far far away. I was born in Hawaii when it was just a territory in 1953. Six years later it became a State within the United States of America. I’m much older now and grateful for my Hawaiian ancestors and family members and friends who still live in Hawaii. My Grandmother Sarah Kekahuna Kaupe Cabral once told me when I was Twelve years old that she could never forget what happened to Hawaii as a young girl she lived in a housing complex called the Kuhio Park Terrace built for senior Hawaiians. I have different views of why this all happened. A lot of historians write about our history and culture. Saying that the Polynesians came from South East Aisa or South America . What do they know? Nothing about my country,my culture and my family. I put my faith and trust in God and Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. I don’t put my faith and trust in any Human beings on this planet that we all are destroying to this day. I commend you for the work and dedication you put into this project and I’m very grateful for you to understand what really is the main problems of Hawai’i and our people today. Aoha, you did a fabulous job putting together this presentation. The research, the details, the story line, the facts and speculation woven together acknowledging which is which was very well done. If I could add anything, and this is just my opinion as I know there are those who will disagree, is to record it again with a narrator/story-teller, with a Hawaiian accent. I feel that for an audience of indigenous peoples, this would have a stronger emotional impact. This current version is fine for an American audience.

Absolutely remarkable! I was premature in the comment I left after Part 3. Time passed and somehow I didn't absorb that. But so glad you mentioned the Ku'e petitions. There were so many
Europeans, Brits,US citizens who came and decided to stand with the Hawaiians & became citizens. They, too were affected by the annexation that never took place. Mahalo, tiara girl. Everyone
should take an afternoon out of their trip to visit Iolani Palace. I worked as a temp for a few months at the Sheraton Palace Hotel and was taken to see Kalakaua's chair on an upper floor. Years
later I tried to show it to my husband, but it was gone and nobody knew anything about it. It had had a brass plate stating that it was the King's chair and it was quite large, as was He.

What a labor of love, and beautiful tribute to this fascinating Princess.
My previous research into the native royalty of Hawaii, afforded me a familiarity with the principle individuals of this story, but never have I heard such a beautifully detailed, and lovingly honorable compilation of the history, heritage, and life of Princess Ka'iulani. It brought tears to my eyes.
Although the Annexation, and subsequent Statehood of Hawaii, was carried out by cruel self-seekers, and should never have happened, as is true of life's tragic events, there were many unfortunate factors that contributed. Nonetheless, once again, the US government, ultimately did not do the right thing.
I have a great interest in the history, and people of Hawaii, for personal reasons, along with a sense of shame as an American citizen.
I now understand with more clarity, my heart's interest in this beloved young Princess. Having had the privilege of being born in Hawaii before it was declared a state, on the same island, there are several other parallels I find of personal interest. Namely, a Scottish father, links to British royalty on my mother's side, and studies in German, French, and Spanish, in my youth.
My life cannot begin to compare with hers, but I do believe it must have been a great honor to have known her. She carried herself with tremendous, unwavering dignity, right up to her tragic and untimely death.
Thank you, for your immense efforts in presenting this story to our modern world.

Please....King Kamehameha brutally conquered the Hawaiian Islands stealing the land from the chiefs of each island....everybody acts like that's ok...if Hawaii had not become an American state I guarantee another nation would have conquered Hawaii either.peacefully or by force....just like native american tribes were conquering eachother for hundreds.of years before being conquered by USA....before American missionaries came to Hawaii, native Hawaiians did not have a written language it was American missionaries that helped create a written Hawaiian language...without literacy you would only have oral traditions and you would be unable to have a clear written record of your history, there would be no higher education...no engineering, No written history....we can't live in the past..its not real.
As much as any of us might wish to return to the past it is a fantasy in the mind....it is a delusion not reality...time is always moving forward...the past is gone it will never return...the present is all you have.......if you were to protest King Kamehameha you would have been slaughtered. It is because you have a right to freedom of speech.protected by the USA 🇺🇸 constitution that you are able to legally protest against the USA 🇺🇸 Government...while living in the 🇺🇸....like it or not Hawaii is 🇺🇸..FACTS.... Lets be honest....Hawaii was in the stone age before the westerners 🇺🇸 came and taught you how to read and write, do mathematics engineering, business, science....without western 🇺🇸 civilization you never would have received education, literacy technology...I'm not trying to be mean I'm just speaking the truth.....please stop glorifying the Kapuu system where ALL the land was owned by the King and all of the nstive Hawaiian people were his indentured servants...SLAVES...the western system 🇺🇸 has endured this long because it has been more functional than primitive, stoneage society....high tech is superior to stoneage tech....the irony is all of the technology you use in everyday life came from other countries...change is inevitable haoles are here to stay 🇺🇸 🇺🇲
    Aloha 😎
