In this video I make my first real solo sailing trip ever from Kaneohe Bay to Waikiki. The trip was around 35 miles and took 8.5 hours.

Hey, you got my attention with your crossing the Pacific videos. I lived on a sailboat for seven years and cruised between Europe and the Caribbean. However, my first blue water sail was between Kaneohe bay and Honolulu. I was attending Hawaii Loa college at the time and had enrolled in a course called "Sailing and Seamanship'. I enrolled mainly because there were a couple of very attractive girls in the course. I got lucky though, because the teacher had a beautiful 36' wooden sloop called Paragon that had been built for the TransPac race. Doug, the teacher, was a serious sailor and really taught us a lot about sailing.
That planted a seed that sprouted 8 years later when I came into a small inheritance that would be enough to get a good sailboat. That, along with a nasty divorce, set me on a path to becoming a full time sailor. All I really remember from that sail is that the Kaiwi channel was really rough and I got incredibly seasick. Right before the sail I pounded a couple of beers and ate a bunch of trail mix. To this day I can't eat trail mix lol. Man thanks for bringing back a bunch of memories. BTW a memory that is not so great is changing out fuel filters a lot. Contaminated diesel was always a huge problem when I was cruising. Keep up your adventure and enjoy it. I am an old guy now, but those memories I made on my boat "Saorsa" are with me till this day.
that's a really cool story. i wish i could hear more about it.
New subscriber! Just a grandmother with grandchildren who live on Oahu, and your videos make me feel closer to them. I’ve always dreamed of owning a sailboat, but your videos and constant maintenance makes me realize it’s just a dream! 🌞
Well done! I suggest making a portable fuel polishing unit with a portable battery. It saved me a ton by always putting fuel in jerrycans then pumping it through the polishing system into the fuel tank.👍 simple fuel pump, racor, some fuel line & valves, portable battery
Another follower and admirer. Great job. Thank you.
Love watching you sail! I have always dreamed of going on sailing adventures! You are living the dream my man. Keep at it!

Proceeds to repair engine …
😂😂
Great problem solving with the engine getting out of Kaneohe! There is a canoe regatta on the 5th at Keehi, it starts around 8:30 IIRC. Should be some food over there if you need a meal. You'll probably know a lot of the racers.
I left Keehi
Nice video. I’d be interested in seeing a boat tour as well. Would be worth getting some spares for the Monitor and replacing the wear parts. They’re pretty easy to work on and the company has great customer service.
Thanks, I bought the cruising parts kit from monitor right after this video was made
Great video, your boat looks bigger than my Catalina 27. Far nicer too.
Hope you do a boat tour! We have a Bristol 27, so I am very curious about the design similarities and differences. Best of luck on your adventures.
Thanks for the comment I’ll try to make a boat tour sometime in the near future
Love watching your vids and getting a feel for life on a sailboat, and seeing the beautiful islands! You are a steady unflappable skipper! Best wishes from the Great White North🇨🇦!
I think you should call it Garrett’s Great Adventure!!
❤
I'm you new subscribe
Pretty impressive sailing over there. Great landscape anyway. What make is that boat?
It’s a 1978 Nor’sea 27! I’m going to do a boat tour soon.
@@garrettsadventure Nice
Yeah Garrett!!
Gorgeous boat... Island Packet?
Nor’sea 27
Just your channel popped up. Subscribed 👍 liked. Will follow you
Thank you!
Hope the wind vane wasn't broken, did you figure out what happened?
This was before we went sailing. The previous owner didn’t install the windvane firm enough so the gears weren’t meshed properly.
When hand steering (motor or sail) always flip the vane rudder up !
@@voyager037 Yep, lesson learned. Thanks for the advice 🤙🏼
