  • Craig Butler from West Coast Tackle shows us a really cool variation of the famous 'Pulley Rig'. With this variation in what is considered the best beach fishing rig, the end part of the rig actually 'slides' down the line to act as a running lever rig upon impact with the water. Craig shows you the components he uses to tie the rig and he takes you through a step by step process of how to tie it. Be sure to watch out Sea Fishing Rigs playlist for more awesome rigs!

    I use a very similar rig that I learned from a video of lads fishing for cod on chesil beach on your channel. Using breakaway pulley beads and genie bait clips to make a modified up and over. Absolutely awesome rigs.

    Have made similar ones. I like up and over rigs for ledger style presentation and a good bait from lead distance. I'll definitely try it. Really hoping this is a precursor to a string of beach fishing videos from our awesome team. Thank you.

      David, You could try a modified up-and-over.
      When I want a roving bait hard on the bottom on a long snood, I no longer use standard up and over.
      I now use two zipsliders between a swivel and a rotter clip (made from 1.2mm diameter 316 TIG welding wire).
      (Please protect the knots with semisoft beads.). Bottom slider eyelet gets fixed onto IMP.
      Weight clips into IMP.
      Rigbody runs through bottom and top slider. (don't forget soft beads at both ends)
      Hooksnood gets tied to the rigbody swivel under bottom slider.
      The hook will stay clipped for the cast if the snood is shorter than twice the rigbody length, so your snood can be quite long, but it can be quite short too.
      ( - Just make sure the hook would hang under the weight when there is a fish on. - ) Top of rigbody has that strong home-made rotter clip one hangs the snood over.
      Once baited up, the snood runs over the clip, the hook goes to IMP.
      Viola, an up and over with sliding weight.
      Casting stress gets truly divided by three, so the snood can be lower test than the rigbody.
      A piece of antitangle silicone tubing helps. (a floatstop can help it stay in place)
      When reeling in an empty hook, this very long trace won't tangle into the weight as much then.
      I do find that bite detection is not optimal with this rig, though.The clip I make is either a piece of wire that has an eyelet one side and 1/4 inch bent over at the other end...
      Or it is a 1 1/2 inch piece of wire bent into the shape of a Z .Forming a small eye and small hook in marine steel weldingwire is fairly easy to do.
      However, an elongated Z shaped clip also works and is dead easy to make.This rig can actually be used with an impact weight instead of IMP, but you need a link to the eye of the slider anyway so I use an IMP and a much cheaper weight.Kind regards, Jaak

    Hi Graeme,
    I prefer a running Leger. Its much simpler and just as effective. Also a Wishbone Rig is doing a great job at the moment for flatties. This isnt a negative by no means as i think Craig is going for distance on this one.
    Best as always to the Pullen family oh and by the way found some Vintage stuff of you abroad on a Hammerhead and it was awesome.
    Steve in Fife.

    so many components! and kinda complicated too... here in Hawaii we fish for huge Trevally we call Ulua along with other reef and pelagic fish that happen to feed near shore! here it's conventional reels loaded with 40 lbs test at the lower end and 80 lbs at the higher end for line . And penn senator reels still have a the loyalty of many fishermen here. from the Jigmaster to the 114 HLW with the 113HLW being the most used for Ulua fishing. the rods to are simply constructed too! most aerial 13' to 14' in length. the ulua rods tend to be on the stiffer side with a fast action to handle 50 - 80 lbs test monofilament and casting weights of 9 - 11 oz lead sinkers . for the other reef fish we use what's known as a bait casting rod same length as ulua rods just slower in action and not as stiff. these rods cast weights of 6 - 8 oz. and monofilament of 40 - 50 lbs test. back to the set up... here it's main line doubled about 6 - 12 inches and tied with a spiders hitch or Bimini twist then knotted to a runner of 100 lbs test monofilament of 15' - 20' in case the fish run you through the sharp reef! then it's just a swivel to the runner a hook line to the other end of said swivel and lastly a lead line of a weaker test then your main line so you lose the lead and not the fish should the lead get stuck. the hook line can be as short as 6 in. or as long as 18 in. also circle hooks are almost the only hook used! baits range from octopus, eels, squid, crabs and shrimp some cut fish bait works well to mackerel being the top bait. also live fish baits gets great results pretty much any reef fish will do just hook it carefully in the upper back and cast it out . look up Ulua fishing! here on RUclips maybe you'll want to fish here in Hawaii after you see what we pull out of the Pacific Ocean!

  • @Flexhunter308
    @Flexhunter308 6 лет назад

    why do people think this is complicated? once you tie one its v simple, and of cource you can change traces so yr rig shoulld last a while ne way. i use this in new zealand, i like how its sort of a combination of a running ledger thats casts like a oulley rig but with the extra advantage of putting your bait on the bottom. i like me and up n over rig to but they come apart in casting, however good for flat sandy areas with a massive free flowing trace on sum pink fluro

  • @themajor38

    is the 30lb hook length not a bit light with a 175gr sinker as its taking alot of the weight when cast ?

    • @Jaak_the_Belgian
      @Jaak_the_Belgian 6 лет назад

      Nicholas, You'll notice that the rigbody line handles 50Lbs, and the snood handles 30 (it is over half of rigbody for a reason)
      In the cast, the action gets divided over the two, so you'd have to exceed 60Lbs casting strain to damage/break this setup.(the weaker link is the snood)( or maybe the hook wire would bend out?)
      I would use a pulley bead instead of a swivel so as not sharply bend the rigbody line, but when you use heavy wire swivels the eye probably won't ever "cut" the line.

      Niall, you can buy these things in a tackle shop, but you can also make them yourself.There are tutorials on all manner of clips and links done by Paul Edwards, aka Sandman's tackle time on youtube.Where I live, I could buy marine steel TIG welding rods by weight, so I got me two dozen or so 1.2mm (for gripwires and rotter clips) and half a dozen 1.6mm (leadlinks must be strong) type 316 TIG rods.A good sidecutter (knippex is great), good Round nose pliers or circlip tool, and universal pliers are needed, but once you have this, you can make all sorts of tackle bits.It takes some practice, but it is worth doing it.Kind regards, Jaak (yes, I am a TAF patreon supporter)
