Such a wonderful perspective, thank you to Laurie for her time! You'll definitely have to have her back on to discuss her book when it comes out. What struck me as she was discussing how the church had been willing to develop customized solutions for each temple in the past and had previously adapted to fit surrounding communities was that the current system smacks of a church that either lacks sufficient architectural talent to do so anymore, or that they are refusing to allow those architects to bring their skills and talents to the job at hand. What an insult to the art and science of architecture. With billions in the bank the church could very well afford to have dozens of the best and brightest architects on staff and bankroll the most innovative designs they could come up with to solve any challenge a location presented. But instead, it appears they have decided on a McTemples approach and aggressive legal/political posturing to shove through bad design work at top speed. It brings to mind a recent comment by legendary Disney imagineer Joe Rohde "there are solutions, but not opportunities."

This was a great discussion. Regarding the pace of temple production: I've compiled some data on when temple announcements, groundbreaking, and dedications happened. It's interesting. During Hinckley's tenure, there was a very short span of sudden temple building (1998 saw 27 announced; 1999 had 32 groundbreakings; and 2000 had an astonishing 34 dedications). Other than those 3 years, he topped out at 7 announced (1997), 5 groundbreakings (1996 and 2000) and 7 dedications (2002). He had a quick push for the "millennium", but was otherwise quite reasonable. Nelson, on the other hand, has announced a minimum of 14 (in 2020) and as many as 35 (2021 and 2022) per year, but had only a max of 21 groundbreakings (in 2020, which is interesting since they're usually in-person events), and a max of only 14 dedications (in 2024, though there are 3 more scheduled, which will make his best year 17); in 2020 they only dedicated 1 temple. In other words, his best year of dedications is only slightly higher than his worst year of announcements. Not only that, but there are currently 119 temples announced (not in construction, and including a few that the church would probably rather not include), but only 59 under construction. And since 7 of those under construction are actually renovations, there are 52 new temples currently under construction. That means that over 2/3 of the not-yet-dedicated temples have not even been started yet! They're definitely not keeping up.

Different Countries have planning laws for a reason. If you want your temple built in a different country then you have to follow the that countries planning laws if you don't follow them then your application will be denied.
The Paris France Temple is right next to the Palace of Versailles which is a historically protected UNESCO Heritage Site. The palace is owned by the government of France and since 1995 has been managed, under the direction of the French Ministry of Culture, by the Public Establishment of the Palace, Museum and National Estate of Versailles. World Heritage Sites are landmarks and areas with legal protection by an international convention administered by UNESCO for having cultural, historical, or scientific significance. The sites are judged to contain "cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity." The French Government don't have all of the control of the palace site as UNESCO is involved. Protected historical landmarks are considered to be outstanding value to the whole of humanity. Building anything in the UK has massive planning laws because of the all of the history underneath the ground and around the area.
Such a financial waste to build multi-million dollar buildings to be used by so few people so rarely. The temples become a burden to staff, clean, and fill. At one point under President Mckay there was a proposal to build a "Temple Ship" that would go to the members around the world rather than building temples everywhere. If you really believe these ordinances are essential, build the temple ship and go to the members. Much lower cost, and we could use the freed up resources to do what Christ would do/did.
NOT a financial waste on so many levels. Aside from the value of what occurs inside for the families, temples are beacons of light and hope in their communities. You wouldn't dare say mosques or synagogues were a waste, whuch demonstrates the level of religous hatred embraced by critics.
As far as what Jesus would do, there is no record of their resources being used for general welfare projects. I'd refer ypu to the account in which Judas had an issue with Mary using expensive perfume to anoint Jesus, stating it could have been sold and used for the poor. Jesus chastised him. If the church gave every cent to help the poor, it would not solve poverty. Any aid organizations would tell you that strategic use of resources is necessary for genuine impact, not just quantity of $. The church is doing amazing humanitarian work, partnering with other established organizations.
@@lemjwp1756 the thing about mosques, synagogues, and churches is that ANYBODY can enter them, and they frequently hold events that benefit the larger community than just their members. Temples aren’t a beacon of light and hope, they’re a reminder of how the LDS corporation separates and excludes their members from others. Additionally, most temples are hideous eyesores compared to cathedrals and grand mosques. So yes, an LDS temple is a financial waste given the amount of money poured into their construction compared to the lack of charity care and community social services provided by a temple.
It's a natural question because people are curious. It is never bad to ask about facts and it is not always good to assume a nefarious purpose for a question. I learned a lot about transgender humans by asking transgender humans questions. The transgenders who said, "how dare you ask, when there is Google," were offensive in tone. The ones who were paient with my stupid questions are the ones who ultimately made me realize just how wrong I was in the past. I wanted to hear how she is treated by the Church, but the discussion about the temples was fascinating too.
Really George? I hope you find your way out of the cobwebs eventually. You may need new wisdom for the sake of some of your grandchildren. All the best.

If you really believe these ordinances are essential, build the temple ship and go to the members. Much lower cost, and we could use the freed up resources to do what Christ would do/did.
Really. They have Food Trucks. Why not Temple Trucks. “Relax…We come to you to baptize dead people”
Only a waste if they're not funneling millions to their own family members and companies to build it tax free...
The Church is building all these new Temples for the Millennium and all the work that will be done during that time.

My sentiments exactly🙄
She? He's a he.
My question abt your architect, is this person a man?
Doesn't matter. Look at the content of the conversation.
I am amazed that the person asking the question has Internet access. 😂
It doesn't matter. Our curiosity should never outweigh rudeness.
I think you already know the answer. You just wanted to ask a devisive question because you are a child.
God does not create anyone gay! Most cases are not developed in this life, but in the pre mortal life.
Really George? I hope you find your way out of the cobwebs eventually. You may need new wisdom for the sake of some of your grandchildren. All the best.
Yes, god only creates straight, white men to whom he gives all power and privilege! Everyone else just made bad decisions?!? That is the LDS teaching and that is why it is so dangerous!
God doesn’t exist. Keep coping.
It's so sad that this willful ignorance is still so prevalent in the lds church and much of Christianity in general. Grow up.
@@dorothymilne1258 You don't know what you are talking about! I have studied theology and Mormon doctrine for more than 60 years! All you are doing is running your mouth on emotion! Make a point! Do you really think that God would condemn homosexuality as he clearly does in the Bible, and then turn right around and make someone that way?!? Think!!! We all are given free agency!
49:59 this former dude refers to the need for large steeples as hupla or something like that. I find it ironic that a guy pretending he's a girl could say that
2nd Largest temple serving 39 stakes is closed more than it is open!! NO CARS in the parking lot.
Bless your heart in all of your sweet, sincere, professional and considerate work in temple architectural planning, Laurie Lee! As an ExMo, you have it spot on regarding temples and workers to make those temple function as intended. Another High Demand Religion tactic to keep members so busy, too busy, for the Lord, that they don’t have time to breathe. No time to research what it true and what is not.
This was a fabulous episode. Thank you ALL for your research, efforts, comparisons, heartfelt opinions.
Perfectly said but adding the religion is a cult.
