  • This weekend we went snagging for sockeye salmon in Seward, Alaska. We got our 1990 lil’ extra van, Vanimal, out of storage and ready for the road. We drove down to Seward to fish in Resurrection Bay. Specifically we went “snagging” which refers to dragging a hook through the water with the intention of hooking a fish in its path. In Alaska you can only snag in salt water. Fresh water fishing through the state has many different rules depending on the location. It is crucial to know the regulations concerning where you are and what species you are targeting.Resurrection Bay is home to many different species of fish, birds, and animals. On this trip we saw whales, seals, eagles, seagulls, salmon, starry flounder, and sculpin.
Our trip started out with amazing weather, the sun was shining and it was hot! After getting camp set up we walked down to the beach and headed into the water. We wear chest waders when we go snagging. It’s important to be cautious when out in Alaskan waters due to fast tides and mud. The first evening we hooked into five fish but weren’t able to land any. We had a couple of issues with our rod and reel set ups which we got sorted that evening.
The second day of our snagging trip, we headed out two hours before high tide. We caught three starry flounder and finished the day with Travis catching our first salmon of the trip. At the end of the day we went back to camp to rest and relax before our final day of fishing before heading home.
What started out as a beautiful and sunny weekend ended with a final day where we were socked in clouds and fog. The fog was so thick we could barely see people 10 yards away from us! The misty ocean was alive with the sounds of the animals and boats out beyond our sight. As the tide drew further in so did the seaweed, which got stuck in our hooks making fishing very difficult. At the end of the day I had caught and landed two salmon. We headed back to camp to clean our catch and pack up camp. We’re grateful to have another weekend doing what we love in the most spectacular place on earth.
If you are looking to tune into what we are listening to on our trips, you can check out our RUclips playlist labeled summer. We do not own the rights to any of the songs in this video.
Our next planned trip is down to the Russian river in Cooper Landing, Alaska. We are hoping to catch more fish to put in our freezer. We aren’t usually at such low numbers in the freezer at this time of year, but we have high hopes that the Russian will provide.

This was a couple weeks ago! We caught the end of the run because we were working on the property.

Any form of snagging fish is so unethical. You have to have no soul as a human to participate in this shit.

Your salmon probably comes from a trawling vessel so
