I had to clap for this guy. What a badass. It's crazy that this cartoon-ish country, North Korea, even exists. It reminds me of Latveria, or an Orwell novel.

it's unfortunate but it is clear and undeniable that in this world, someone always has to die first before things change.

For those who are interested in more insight into the origiins and fundamentals of racial ideology and culture of mainly North Korea as a state, but also Koreans in general, I recommend reading "The Cleanest Race" by B. R. Myers!

they get 100,000 dollars per person after they complete "assimilation training." does any other western country give that much money to refugee immigrants?

Being South Korean, it's already hard as hell for citizens of South Korea to get jobs let alone a defector with no educational or background experience. Can't really agree with him in saying the south doesn't care for the defectors, the competition for jobs in South Korea is insane.

If what he said is true then this guy is one of wealthy 1% of North Korean capital resident. 99% of North Korean defectors who risked their lives escaping North would dare not say that they would return back. Korean government does well at assisting the defectors financially and helps them settle into the South Korean society. Compare to the immortal things they had to do to survive, they call South a paradise. This guy is trying to make a political statement and might even have ties with the North.

Why do they have to say they're defectors from North Korea when they try to get a job ? Can't they just lie a bit and not talk about this to the headhunters ?

    • @delusionnnnn

I'm not intimately familiar with how one applies for jobs in South Korea, but in the US, when you apply for a job, you're required to give your social security number, and most employers want to do a basic background check using your driver's license or state ID. I would presume that South Korea handles employment in ways that also require a state ID and possibly other documentation. Beyond that, South Koreans distrust North Koreans, and defectors are often treated with suspicion. While South Korea has all the reason in the world to distrust North Korea, this suspicion unfortunately often extends to individuals, and not just the state itself.

Also employers and employees would recognise his accent as being from the north. So there's really no way around it for him.

Lying and cheating are very serious offences in the Korean culture, and is frowned harshly upon and can have very negative consequences if caught.

Just get a job. Don't do that it's so not worth it. And just don't tell them you're a defector! Or if they ask tell them how happy you are to be in a country where you can actually go and get what you want to eat and not have to starve!

Basically all of his most distant relations and friends were stripped of all property and sent to penal labor prison camps until death for his fleeing North Korea. His self-sacrifice is the only thing he can really do to redeem himself in any kind of ethical or karmic sense. His choices brought great suffering, and now his choices can potentially relieve much suffering. It is a complex and tortured decision he faces.
