The whole ‘minimalist’ debate is a bit weird imo. In some aspects it kinda sounds like ‘I’m better than you because I’m more miserable while camping’? For example: What is the point of having a single gas burner if your favorite meal require two burners? Anyway it’s all relative, living in any vehicle is probably minimalist compared to a house. But is my landrover minimalist compared to a MAN truck? In some aspects, absolutely. But I’ve driven so many roads that have a 3.5 ton limit, that opting for a big truck would limit me more (so in a sense be more minimalist) than my Landy ever would. Obviously overloading your truck is bad, and it will almost always diminish your experience, not enrich it. So in that sense, the minimalist approach is good advice. ‘Take the least amount of stuff possible, and add as needed’ rather than ‘take everything, and never get rid of the stuff you don’t use’.
Absolutely! All is relative and there’s no good or bad way of doing. Don’t either like the “we don’t need all that so we’re better than you” this has no value and don’t help us learn and grow from different experiences.
Bring what is important to you. Camping is not what it used to be 30 years ago we have wonderful technology now, 12v fridge, inverters, light weight chairs and on and on . Good time to be alive.
Absolutely! We live in a different time and there's no reason we shouldn't get a hand on some of these cool accessories and upgrades to enjoy the outdoors with our 4x4.
True everything you say. Well, imagine my wife and I, we don't have a roof tent on our Land Cruiser. It is also true that we no longer go with children, they are older and have their families. Of course, I have a box on the roof, which I believe, if I'm not mistaken, is the roof box with the largest capacity on the market (Farad Marlin), 680 liters. With Raptor type paint. Since we slept inside the car, imagine what we would do without the roof box. Like you, we have a place for everything, and any free space is used. To say that the configuration of our car is very far from yours, you have done a magnificent job. Kind regards.
Thanks! All setup and needs of comfort are different. It’s true we brought it up to the next level with this new rebuild but it’s only based on what we see today as useful, efficient, and the comfort we want. How we want to enjoy it today is different than 10years ago. We have learnt a lot. I’m sure you and your wife enjoy it differently since kids no longer travel with you :)
The destination and the roads to get there should define what you can/cannot take with. The Defender can handle weight easily but the terrain to be crossed should be seriously considered. Wild camping in Africa is completely different to camping in Europe. Weight is the primary rule since a problem situation (getting stuck or breakage) could become life threatening.
4x4 Overlanding is different on every continent and vehicle must be prepared according to. With that said I do think as we know we are always heavily loaded and have done mechanical upgrades according to that, it might be more the experience and acquired skills that will be of most help when out in any country. Just as when my husband was in Namibia this year with a rental car and was able to get out of bad situation even without all our equipment because he didn't have it.
I’m not sure about the Minimalist thing but only bringing what you need to me is common sense especially when you have limited space. And I to don’t like stuff on the roof, it raises the center of gravity.
agree it's common sense and not always easy especially when starting out. I do think it's something that can be acquired over the experience of going regurlaly out and knowing what & how we enjoy it.
Well, when I go to a restaurant and I don't like the food, I don't go to that restaurant anymore. Just as you are free to publish that comment, Emeline is free to publish what you want. Have a good weekend and better mood.
