I've watched lot's of ramp building videos, some very good ones. This is the best. Simple, straightforward, to the point. Excellent, thank you, from Dublin, Ireland.
Hell yeah dude. Breakin out the chop saw right now! Also, you can screw in about 8" of rope to the front safety stop and then you have handles to lug these bad boys around.
To save driving off the end I would just mirror the other side so if you overshoot , no problem, just reverse a notch. makes for a longer unit, but make it hybrid swing apart like.
Definitely put a stop on the end! It's a real problem if you drive off the end working solo (or with idiots!). Trying to get a car down after a metal ramp on a smooth surface got fired backwards and wedged as the driver tried to drive up was difficult and pretty dangerous with only a basic jack and too many wood blocks to get it high enough to recover the ramp. Good build, simple and cheap. For extra traction staple some chicken wire on there or use a chainsaw to add grooves etc, helps once the edges get rounded and oil etc inevitably get spilled on them.
Exactly like ones I built myself a while back. I put handles on the large end of each of mine for carrying. Also nailed mine instead of screwing. Nail gun prevents splitting.
Thanks Randy! Yes! I did but forgot to mention in this video. I think I do in the next video I shot. Nissan Altima Oil Change. Why I built the ramps for originally. I also just made some new Wheel Chocks, stay tuned for the video! 👍🏻
A little on the narrow side but a good idea at least 6 inches widfer I would reckon, you need to be dead straight driving up those any mistakes bang...
@@ned1621 yeah they work well for car tires, but not truck or large suv. 2x12s would be good for those. I have some other ramps (rhino ramps) someone gave me for my truck though.
hi I have a ATV and working on replacing the pull start and mechanic part and I don’t want to spend a lot of money getting it up high so I can work on it, it’s not running at the moment, I could go out and buy rollers but I don’t want to at the moment, I will be posting my video here soon on my channel.
Yeah Ive pulled some that either the screw head got stripped or the whole head sheared off. Have had luck using screw extractor sets. If youve got a welder or a friend has one, can weld a nut to it too
Thanks so much we r still working on it we have another atv that’s brand new this one is the oldest one just trying to get it back up and running with out that pull start it will not run. Screw and found out the housing is aluminum ahg hoping to fix it when we get back from our trip. So we can take both on off road trips
I've had metal ramp slide under the vehicle. Would these be safer having more friction on the bottom? Or would rubber bottom be deeded for extra friction?
Hey Jason if only doing 3 tiers I would do something like 42 inch, 32 inch & 22 inch. That way you use the whole 8 ft boards and it be more gradual of incline up the ramps. I wouldnt even bother to bevel the cuts as I did with that gradual of ramps for a Sienna
@@JonnyDIY nice video on the wooden ramps! Hey have you heard anyone having problems with the metal ramps? I have a pair of them that are rated for 8000 lbs (4 tons) - I’ve seen the plastic ones, and to me they look like a lawsuit waiting to happen. I’ve had the metal ones since the 90’s and they still work great!
@@JonnyDIY this is true! I do use jack stands in addition to the metal ramps, along with wheel chocks behind the back tires. I am a stickler when it comes to safety while doing automotive work. In the perfect world, I’d have a lift in my garage, but you work with what you’ve got. 🤷🏻♂️
Those board are around 40 bucks a piece right now so 80 bucks plus glue and screws and your time you're looking at around 120 bucks can buy ramps online for 40 bucks, glad I built mine when wood was cheap
@@JonnyDIY not in Wisconsin, they went up 2 dollars last week I was buying them for about 2 months strait and the first 3 weeks the price came out the same the last week of the job we went to get the last 3 loads and it was 87 dollars more we were like wtf? When we asked they said the price went up 2 dollars a board, the owner was needless to say PISSED
That's true. I was doing a bunch of carpentry during the time I built these and at the hardware store everyday so it made sense. It was a lot cheaper than buying the ramps, but getting some 2nd hand ones is probably the way to go. Spend the same price but not much time investment 👍
@@JonnyDIY oh yeah I totally agree ! I’m a carpenter also ! And was actually thinking of cutting some scraps for a ramp before I found your video! We do save if you use what you have and it can be relaxing! I was relaying it more to driving a truck to lumber store and waiting in line to buy all supplies plus gas spent and all that good stuff! I always use my scraps for cool project ideas like this!
Have used these a bunch without any splitting. Predrilling helps. I also always put a jackstand under vehicle even when its on ramps. Can never be too safe ya know 👍🏻
Daniel Cleary We typically use rough cut which is heavier but standard lumber should work for any passenger vehicle. If in doubt I wold go go wider to distribute the weight a little more.
Nice! These will save you some money especially if you already have wood. Wood prices are high right now but should be able to build some for around $50 or less depending how wide lumber you get. Actually Walmart and Harbor Freight have some ramps for around $50 too. I have some Rhino Ramps, solid. But wood are great because can customize the height and rise

Awesome, a chop saw will make quick work of this job 👍🏻 yeah I ended up putting some handles on the sides. I just found the balance point with a rope
Very nice indeed; I like how you made the top plenty long enough for safety too; you get 110% on this great to the point video !!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for the kind words Tim 👍🏻
I like this as it's solid everywhere, no gaps

@@Swenser good idea, especially for higher clearance vehicles like trucks etc you could just pull up and then pull forward and be done 👍
You can mitre when you cut the wood the very first time. That way you have half as many cuts.
Yes! Thatll work better. Then u get 2 per mitre. I didnt think to mitre til i was done 😁

each piece of wood you add is about 1.5 inches so these came out to total of about 6 inches tall or about 16cm

Those are bevels not miters. A miter angle is on the face of the board a bevel is along the thickness.
